Business Ethics and Cost Management in SMEs

This chapter illustrates aspects of business ethics and cost management applicable to small and medium-sized entities. The main objectives of this chapter are to identify and clarify ethical issues and business ethics theories applicable to small and medium-sized entities as well as to identify the functions and principles underpinning the cost management of small and medium-sized entities. Based on the literature, the authors also identify the factors that generate the ethical behavior, the organizational culture, the factors that influence the cost management of small and medium entities. There are also highlights of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility through which small and medium-sized entities align with the expectations and requirements of customers, the population and investors. Through the authors' contribution, a new conceptual and empirical framework is created to discuss other issues encountered in the business environment of small and medium-sized entities.

This paper analyses the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in the 2030 ‘Transforming the World’ Agenda, from 2015, as a contribution to business ethics and ethical economy. The Sustainable Development Goals combine political aims with visions of economic development and social justice and are therefore important for business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Thus, the Sustainable Development Goals constitute a driver for ethical economic development and social change. However, there is a need for critical analysis of the possibilities of Sustainable Development Goals of functioning as a vision and a strategic tool for management and governance. The aim of the paper is to investigate these possibilities of the Sustainable Development Goals of contributing to business ethics and ethical economy with mobilization of business, public institutions and organizations, and non-governmental organizations. After presenting the Sustainable Development Goals, the paper critically discusses their scope and potential for corporate social responsibility, business ethics and corporate sustainability. This involves the problem of how the Sustainable Development Goals can contribute to a transformation towards another economy. As a contribution to business ethics, the paper elaborates on partnerships for Sustainable Development Goals, sustainable performance management systems and the Sustainable Development Goal Compass with the aim of interpreting Sustainable Development Goals as a basis for progressive business ethics models.

Subject area Corporate social responsibility (CSR). Study level/applicability The Homegrown case is designed for teaching corporate social responsibility and business ethics at undergraduate and graduate levels. The case may be used on a variety of courses including: corporate social responsibility, business ethics and corporate social responsibility, and business ethics. Case overview In May 2003, the headline of the East African newspaper screamed “The Kenyan Horticultural Industry under fire.” The industry was accused of exploitative labor policies with respect to working conditions, workers' welfare, sexual harassment, and exposure to harmful pesticides by the key stakeholders led by the Kenya Human Rights Commission. The stakeholders had announced plans to conduct national and international campaigns against the flower growing and exporting companies in Kenya. Mr Richard Fox, the Managing Director of Homegrown was worried that the publicity had adversely tarnished the image and reputation of the horticultural industry in Kenya as a whole, including Homegrown. He wondered how best to respond to these allegations. Should Homegrown wait to see what the competitors and other stakeholders would do, as these were industry-wide problems or should Homegrown take the lead? And if so, what should be the scope of the programs, given the diverse nature of the issues? He had to make decision quickly. Expected learning outcomes The case provides opportunity for students to analyze, discuss, and debate topical issues in CSR. At the end of the case, students should be able to: identify emerging CSR and ethical issues facing the horticultural industry in Kenya; analyze the cost of implementing CSR programs in business organizations; evaluate the impact of CSR programs on business performance; justify and defend choices on CSR, and ethical decisions. The authors propose an analysis of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept together with an emphasis on the role it plays in the context of sustainable development. As this is a concept with a relatively brief history in the Romanian business environment, the authors include references to relevant papers in the specialised literature throughout this chapter. The chapter includes a synthesis of the various theoretical approaches to CSR, an overview of the CSR practices development at national and international level, certain authors' for and against arguments related to generalising these practices, trends regarding CSR practices at international level, as well as an analysis of the CSR practices in Romania. The research conclusions express own points of view on the development of corporate social responsibility initiatives at company level and the related benefits thereof.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a broad concept, and it has witnessed several versions since its initiation. Without doubt, in the current business and economic scenario, CSR has been gaining momentum; therefore, it is crucial to explore and comprehend the basic responsibility of CSR and sustainable development. It is, therefore, significant to analyse and explore the evolution of CSR throughout the years and link it with sustainable development. The present study analyses and compares the various CSR models based on the order of significance, scope of responsibility, role of philanthropy, CSR–corporate financial performance relationship and attractiveness and its impact on sustainable development. The study reveals that the concept of CSR and sustainable development are steadily stepping towards a unified form, where companies’ commitment towards social obligation brings about practical and exhaustive improvement. It was observed that several models have been proposed and modified, yet there is a wide gap between the concept and practical execution of CSR models due to the different strategies followed by business organizations, which vary from nation to nation depending upon their business environment. The widely accepted stakeholder model suggests that companies should care for the interests of stakeholders, for instance shareholders, traders, consumers, employees and the society, for sustaining its business.

Purpose This study aims to establish the link between business ethics and brand loyalty and to investigate the mediating role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as green marketing. Design/methodology/approach Using the purposive sampling technique, data were obtained from 622 middle-income city dwellers who shop at leading retail malls. Data were analyzed with partial least square–structural equation model. Findings The study found a positive and significant relationship between business ethics, CSR, green marketing and business loyalty. Both CSR and green marketing mediate between perceived firm ethicality and brand loyalty. Research limitations/implications This research was done based on general knowledge of business ethics, CSR and green marketing from the consumers’ perspective. Future studies can avoid this limitation. Practical implications By ensuring ethical codes, CSR and green marketing, firms can contribute to promoting the SDGs, and at the same time, achieving customer loyalty. Brand loyalty is further enhanced if customers see a firm to be practicing CSR. Social implications The SDGs of sustainable production patterns, climate change and its impacts, and sustainably using water resources must become the focus of companies as they ultimately yield loyalty. Policymakers and society can design a policy to facilitate adoption of better ethical behavior and green marketing by firms as a way of promoting SDGs. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to test the mediation effect of green marketing and CSR on how ethical behavior leads to brand loyalty. It is also one of the few papers to examine how SDGs can be promoted by businesses as stakeholders.

The challenges for companies are getting bigger today. CSR is used as a guideline for corporate strategy to take the interests of all stakeholders into account. The application of CSR has to do with how the company is well managed and managed (GCG). The implementation of GCG has a positive effect on the business environment of a company and has a positive effect on the company as investors increasingly trust the company. CSR develops because the long-term sustainability of the company is more important than just profitability. Companies have social and ecological responsibility for ethical behavior, which is referred to as corporate social responsibility (CSR) or corporate citizenship. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a company's commitment to the conduct of its business. It aims not only to increase the company's financial profit, but also to build a sustainable socio-economy. It can be concluded that the fundamental aspect of implementing CSR for the company is a form of the company's commitment to the well-being of employees and their families, the surrounding community (local) and in particular the entire community and that the implementation takes place in a sustainable manner. This paper is intended to provide an overview of the implementation of corporate social responsibility with its relevance to business ethics and good corporate governance in Indonesia. The research method used is a library and observation method based on the author's experience in dealing with PT XYZ Raya, one of the national companies for paints and chemicals, as a supplier of various types of colors

This chapter introduces the concept of corporate social responsibility and argues that it offers potential contributions to sustainable development by bringing incentives for corporations to act socially responsibly. This chapter continues by exploring the theoretical framework including conceptualizations and the historical perspective of the concepts. It then introduces related terms such as ethics, business ethics, sustainability, and development. As a result, the chapter discusses corporate social responsibility and ethics in management in light of sustainability and development. The conclusion reflects on possible weaknesses, limitations, and challenges to corporate social responsibility and ethics as the primary actors for sustainable development.

Much has been written about the need for more humane, ethical, socially just and trans­parent ways of doing business and performing entrepreneurial activities. Consistent with this, con­cepts such as sustainable development, corporate citizenship, corporate sustainability (CS), sus­tainable entrepreneurship, business ethics, and corporate social responsibility (CSR), among many others, have emerged. This diversity of expressions raises the need to development a new typology for to CS. This paper addresses this gap and describes a framework typology for corporate sustain­ability, by analysing sustainability drivers and the interactivity factors in the context of sustainability. It also describes the various types of sustainable emphasis given by companies and their associated levels of CS, which may pave the way for a new framework typology.
