3D InSAR Phase Unwrapping Within the Compressive Sensing Framework

This chapter presents a new phase unwrapping algorithm for the 3D Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (3D InSAR) volumes. The proposed approach is based on the relationship between the gradient vectors of the observed wrapped phase and the true phase respectively, when the Itoh condition is satisfied. Since this relationship is violated by the residue pixels in the observed wrapped phase, a general problem formulation which takes into account the estimation error due to these residue values is proposed. This approach exploits the temporal inter correlation between the interferometric frames within a compressive sensing framework. The 3D discrete curvelet transform is used in order to ensure a suitable sparse representation of the phase volume. The performance of the proposed 3D phase unwrapping algorithm is tested on simulated and real SAR 3D datasets

The relationships of width, thickness, volume and load to extension for human skin in vitro are reported. The specimens tested exhibited a low stiffness phase followed by a high stiffness phase. Volume rose than fell back to the initial volume at approximately the end of the low stiffness phase, and continued on falling to a final reduction of about 20 per cent at failure. Width decreased throughout, showing a maximum rate of reduction at approximately the end of the low stiffness phase. Thickness increased at a rate which also was maximum at the end of the low stiffness phase. The specimens used were long compared with their width and thickness thus offering no constraint to lateral contraction. An interpretation of this data in respect of the behaviour of the collagen fibre matrix is postulated.

The new issue of the journal «Current Problems of Europe» opens with the problem-oriented article, dedicated to the analysis of the state of the Balkans / South-Eastern Europe region and its development in 2000-2020. The author gives a systemic description of the processes taking place in the intra-national and international intra-regional political, social and economic development of the countries of the region, and the problems generated by them. The changes are associated with a difficult transition phase, experienced by the states of the region, for the most part belonging to the post-socialist world (Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania). The exceptions are Greece, Turkey and Cyprus, however, these three states are also going through a difficult period in their history, associated with new problems both in interstate relations within this triangle, and in relations with NATO and the EU, as well as with Russia. The article discusses the specifics of translating the terms «people» and «national» into Russian, as well as the toponym Kosovo (Serb.) / Kosova (Alb.), and ethnonyms «Bošnjak» and «bosanac». The first part of the issue contains articles devoted to general problems of regional studies: the relationship between the terms Eastern Europe, Central Europe, South-Eastern Europe, Balkans, Western Balkans; comparative and political science subjects; the role of the European Union and China in the development of the region; the relationship of national Serbian, post-Yugoslavian and European culture and intellectual heritage as well. The second part of the issue examines the relations of the Balkan states with the states of Central and Eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Romania, Belarus), as well as the specifics of their development in the post-socialist period. Thus, there is the possibility of a multilateral - historical, political and cultural, as well as comparative analysis of the development of this complex region, which is of great importance for international relations worldwide.

Reflections on History and Literature Pierre-Emmanuel Dauzat discusses the relationship between history and literature on the Shoah, in particular through an analysis of Jonathan Littells highly successful novel, published initially in France and translated in other European countries. The phase of complex signals is wrapped since it can only be measured modulo-2; unwrapping searches for the 2-combinations that minimize the discontinuity of the unwrapped phase, as only the unwrapped phase can be analyzed and interpreted by further processing. Weighted least squares phase unwrapping algorithm could avoid errors transmission in the whole phase images, but it could not avoid defect and overlay of interference fringes caused by topographic factors. Therefore, a new phase unwrapping and weights choosing method based on local phase frequency estimate of topographic factors was presented. Experiments show it is an efficient phase unwrapping method which well overcome the defect of under-estimate slopes by least squares algorithm, and has higher accuracy and stability than other methods.

Genetic data can be used to estimate the stock composition of mixed-stock fisheries. Designing efficient strategies for estimating mixture proportions is important, but several aspects of study design remain poorly understood, particularly the relationship between genetic polymorphism and estimation error. In this study, computer simulation was used to investigate how the following variables affect expected squared error of mixture estimates: the number of loci examined, the number of alleles at those loci, and the size of baseline data sets. This work showed that (i) loci with more alleles produced estimates of stock proportions that had a lower expected squared error than less polymorphic loci, (ii) highly polymorphic loci did not require larger samples than less polymorphic loci, and (iii) the total number of independent alleles examined is a reasonable indicator of the quality of estimates of stock proportions.
