E-Learning Ecosystems Through the Co-Creation of Value From Service Ecosystems

Recently the e-learning community has begun to view the e-learning environment as a self-sustaining ecosystem that provides learners with the tools and surroundings they need to achieve their learning. An e-learning ecosystem is a community where organisms interact with one another and with their physical environment. Every organism has a role to fulfil and there must be a harmonious balance between all aspects of the ecosystem in order for the organisms to flourish and evolve. An e-learning system can be considered as a service system—the application of competences for the benefit of another. What exactly are the characteristics of an e-learning ecosystem and how can e-learning professionals create such an ecosystem that provide values for the different elements of the e-learning ecosystem? This chapter shows the concepts of service ecosystems that can be used to design an effective e-learning ecosystem that will provide value to the different stakeholders involved.

The Chinese government is pursuing e-learning policies which makes job-training with a knowledge-based society. To explain more fully the important role of the e-learning environment, this article undertakes some typical examples of the governments' job-training under e-learning environment. The main problems in servants' job-training in China are the low quantity in the servants' training, short of restriction, the uniform manner in the training and less fairness and availability of opportunities for educational training. In order to develop the e-learning system, the civil servant's job training policies are provided and the measures of the effective e-learning system are designed.

E-learning environments and their system functionalities resemble one another to a large extent. Recent standardization efforts in e-learning concentrate on the reuse of learning material only, but not on the reuse of application or system functionalities. The LearnServe system, under development at the University of Muenster, builds on the assumption that a typical learning system is a collection of activities or processes that interact with learners and suitably chosen content, the latter in the form of learning objects. This enables us to divide the main functionality of an e-learning system into a number of stand-alone applications or services. The realization of these applications based on the emerging technical paradigm of Web services then renders a wide reuse of functionality possible, thereby giving learners a higher flexibility of choosing content and functionalities to be included in their learning environment. In such a scenario, it must be possible to maintain user identity and data across service and server boundaries. This chapter presents an architecture for implementing user authentication and the manipulation of user data across several Web services. In particular, it demonstrates how to exploit the SPML and SAML standards so that cross-domain single sign-on can be offered to the users of a service-based learning environment. The chapter also discusses how this is being integrated into LearnServe.

Access to education is one of the main human rights. Everyone should have access to education and be capable of benefiting from it. However there are a number who are excluded, not because of a lack of ability but simply because they have a disability or specific need which current education systems do not address. A learning system in which content, tools and interfaces can be personalised and adapted to the individual needs and preferences of a variety of learners, including those with disabilities, becomes inclusive. Assessment is an integral part of an e-learning environment and therefore it has to provide not only inclusive e-learning content but also inclusive e-assessment. The proposed research investigates an intelligent adaptable e-learning system for assessing students' level of skill, knowledge and understanding regardless of their disabilities or accessibility needs. It is based on an innovative use of world's first open source adaptable widget design and authoring toolkit (WIDGaT) as the prototyping environment.

Blended learning has been recognized as the most promising emerging trend in higher education, offering new capabilities, as it may significantly enhance the interaction and communication between instructors and students. The challenge of blended learning is to balance weaknesses and strengths of face-to-face and e-learning teaching environments and effectively combining them to provide enhanced learning capabilities. Its success should benefit instructor-student relation. To this end, the authors adopt ecosystem-based approach to model the blended learning environment and identify its constituents, i.e., instructors, students, consultants, technology. and their evolving relations. The proposed concept was utilized to explore the potential of blended learning in the academic environment. A study was conducted at Harokopio University of Athens over a period of three years to explore the relations between blended learning ecosystem constituents, focusing on instructor -student relation.

This paper explores the components of participatory engagement to improve learner’s engagement within the e-learning community. Data are gathered through observations to measuring the interactions of the learner’s. The measurement included the learners’ feedbacks through the interactions of learners and educators, learners and learners and learners and content. Follow-up interviews are conducted to get deeper insights into the interactions and overall learner’s engagement environment. Findings show that in order to promote learners’ engagement in e-learning components such as accessibility, mobility, active learning and collaboration must be present in an e-learning ecosystem.

At present, Higher education sector in Egypt plays an important role. The exponential change in technology initiates improving its services. As a result of the increased pressure to improve competitiveness, and due to COVID19 circumstances, academic institutions are motivated to adopt a system perspective, elevating strategies towards achieving E-learning. This research is mainly targeting exploring practices of E-learning in higher education, its influence on enhancing the education process and in-house customers' satisfaction (students). There’s a dissimilarity between E-learning teaching and the traditional teaching, there are many debates. Creating effective E-learning environment has become a top priority for higher academic institutions. The parameters of the E-learning system effectiveness are not revealed. The main objective of this research is to find out whether the online teaching method compared to the traditional teaching method, in different colleges of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT); will achieve a higher quality level than that created using the traditional education approach in specific. The research aims at exploring students’ perceptions towards E-Learning teaching method & traditional teaching method concerning learning environment satisfaction, quality of achievements and performance. The research approaches adopted in this study includes executing an experimental study using a quasi-experiment design to direct the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime transport (AASTMT) to different knowledge bases in instruction technology. Moreover, the findings from this research would provide evidence and add to the body of knowledge in higher education. The methodology of the research is seeking to apply E-learning to manage development and improve performance, as a starting point to assess the effect of applying E-learning on enhancing the education process. This research is the first in higher education in Egypt to hold a comparison between teaching methods and study the effect of this combination of dimensions together and analyze the E-Learning teaching method effect on enhancing education and improving quality. Finally, the research will elaborate the problems faced to improve the E-Learning teaching method as a prerequisite for higher education since the beginning of COVID19 pandemic.

Abstract Technological advancements within the educational sector and online learning promoted portable data-based adaptive techniques to influence the developments within transformative learning and enhancing the learning experience. However, many common adaptive educational systems tend to focus on adopting learning content that revolves around pre-black box learner modelling and teaching models that depend on the ideas of a few experts. Such views might be characterized by various sources of uncertainty about the learner response evaluation with adaptive educational system, linked to learner reception of instruction. High linguistic uncertainty levels in e-learning settings result in different user interpretations and responses to the same techniques, words, or terms according to their plans, cognition, pre-knowledge, and motivation levels. Hence, adaptive teaching models must be targeted to individual learners’ needs. Thus, developing a teaching model based on the knowledge of how learners interact with the learning environment in readable and interpretable white box models is critical in the guidance of the adaptation approach for learners’ needs as well as understanding the way learning is achieved. This paper presents a novel interval type-2 fuzzy logic-based system which is capable of identifying learners’ preferred learning strategies and knowledge delivery needs that revolves around characteristics of learners and the existing knowledge level in generating an adaptive learning environment. We have conducted a large scale evaluation of the proposed system via real-word experiments on 1458 students within a massively crowded e-learning platform. Such evaluations have shown the proposed interval type-2 fuzzy logic system’s capability of handling the encountered uncertainties which enabled to achieve superior performance with regard to better completion and success rates as well as enhanced learning compared to the non-adaptive systems, adaptive system versions led by the teacher, and type-1-based fuzzy based counterparts.
