Multiple Representations in Multimedia Materials

The movement toward utilising multimedia learning environments in teaching has increased dramatically in recent years.  This chapter reports on current research trends relevant to the development of these environments. Specifically analyzing issues related to designing for an ever increasing multiliterate clientele. It highlights the use of multiple representations and investigates some cognitive constraints present when displaying this information.  Lastly, when learners are given a level of choice in accessing materials they may be further empowered in their knowledge acquisition. An understanding of these basic concepts will play an important role in our approach to Instructional Design. Therefore a set of recommendations is made for the design of these materials.

Technology advances quickly in today’s society. This is particularly true in regard to instructional multimedia. One increasingly important aspect of instructional multimedia design is determining the type of voice that will provide the narration; however, research in the area is dated and limited in scope. Using a randomized pretest–posttest design, we examined the efficacy of learning from an instructional animation where narration was provided by an older text-to-speech engine, a modern text-to-speech engine, or a recorded human voice. In most respects, those who learned from the modern text-to-speech engine were not statistically different in regard to their perceptions, learning outcomes, or cognitive efficiency measures compared with those who learned from the recorded human voice. Our results imply that software technologies may have reached a point where they can credibly and effectively deliver the narration for multimedia learning environments.

From the perspective of experts in instructional design, what pedagogical elements favor the construction of virtual learning environments? It is the question that guides the present investigation. Education has had significant changes in recent decades, so institutions would be expected to transform. The management of educational change must be carried out from within the institutions themselves, who, through the operability of their educational model, foster the learning of their students. The innovation elements of an institution involve the entire educational community. The pedagogical foundations must permeate the management team, teachers and administrative staff to achieve true educational quality in any educational modality. This research focuses on the particularities of the virtual modality. It aims to analyze the different perspectives of instructional designers of institutions of higher and higher education regarding what pedagogical elements are necessary in offering virtual education. It also analyzes the professional profile of those who exercise the role of instructional designer in the different institutions.

<span>Flexible delivery of educational resources must take account of cultural variables and recognise the specific learning needs, preferences and styles of learners. In designing instruction, there may be a tension between the need to ensure access for a diverse student population, while at the same time taking into account the need for localisation to accommodate learners' particular cultures, cognitive styles and preferences. Considering the micro and macro cultural levels of instructional design is therefore essential if appropriate learning environments are to be created. The acceptance, use and impact of WWW sites is affected by the cultural backgrounds, values, needs and preferences of learners.</span><p>One of the limitations in current instructional design models is that they do not fully contextualise the learning experience, and are themselves the product of particular cultures. The design of Web based instruction is not culturally neutral, but instead is based on the particular epistemologies, learning theories and goal orientations of the designers themselves. Recently, theorists have argued for a cultural dimension in the design process and the need to provide culturally sensitive learning environments.</p><p>In this paper, we trace the design processes involved in the development of an online learning environment for indigenous Australian learners preparing to enter university, and account for the cultural issues that impacted on creation of learning tasks and styles of communication. The paper argues for cultural localisation, which means incorporating the local values, styles of learning and cognitive preferences of the target population. It also means going beyond surface level design considerations, to achieve culturally inclusive constructivist learning environments. Examples of tasks, activities and forms of online interaction are provided in the context of a bi-cultural model of learning that recognises diversity and different learning needs. It is recommended that when creating WWW based course support sites for cultural inclusivity, systematic attention must be given to particular design guidelines, which include responsiveness to learner needs, community based learning and cultural contextualisation of learning activities.</p>

In this chapter, situations that can cause split of attention in multimedia environments were determined via eye tracking method. Fixation numbers, heat maps and area of interest of learners were analyzed. As a result of these analyses, design suggestions were determined for multimedia environments to provide focusing attention to content without split attention effect. Visual and auditory resources should be provided simultaneously. Visual information should be supported with auditory expression instead of texts. Images such as videos, pictures and texts should not be presented on the same screen. Texts provided with pictures should be presented via integration to each other instead of separate presentation of text and picture. Texts provided with videos should be presented via integration to each other instead of separate presentation of text and video. Images should be given via marking important points on images to increase attention.
