Procedure for Mapping Information Flow

This chapter considers information flow as an important dimension of information quality and proposes a procedure for mapping information flow. The surgery management process (SMP) of a public hospital is used as a case in which to illustrate the steps of the developed procedure. The chapter discusses the issues that make information mapping of SMP a challenging task and explains the difficulties associated with traditional process mapping techniques in determining the interdependencies and information flow within and between various elements of SMP activities. The proposed procedure integrates a structured process mapping technique known as IDEF0 with another structured technique referred to as dependency structured matrix (DSM) to map the information flow within SMP. The chapter indicates that it is possible to reduce feedback from other activities that affect the performance of SMP by administratively controlling the information flow through certain activities of SMP.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a scalable conceptual framework for governance of supply chain (SC) information flows by re-contextualizing the organizational concept of information governance as an SC concept. Design/methodology/approach This study leverages the strategy-structure-process-performance (SSPP) theory base to explain how effective SC information governance relates to improved internal SC performance. Via an in-depth literature review followed by conceptual theory building, the key features of organizational-level information governance are cast into a theoretical framework. Findings This study presents the theoretical framework that explains how SC information governance should contribute to improved internal SC performance. The proposed framework provides a theoretical basis for future research on SC information governance and would become a useful first step to extend the concept of SC information governance at the SC level. Practical implications SC managers should be aware that information governance mechanisms, rather than the management of basic, information flow-directed processes, to yield the best performance outcomes. Because of the numerous touch points information has in complex SCs, managing the quality of SC information through broader, higher-level governance standards is more important than maximizing connectivity and information flows, and information governance structures/policies across organizations should be designed accordingly. Originality/value This study theoretically links SC information governance and internal SC performance via information quality. It also advances the understanding of SC information flow by challenging the implicit but flawed assumption that uniformity of information quality within the supply chain to create the best outcomes.

This chapter assesses the suitability of mobile phone technology, an established technology (humanitarian), to support humanitarian operations, create an inventory of support donations, and track the needs of people throughout humanitarian logistics after the disaster. The main objective is to reduce the exposure to the consequences of disasters by reducing the time of information flow through SMS interaction technology. Quebrada Quirio was used as a prototype. The process consists of using the INDECI rapid assessment visit to collect basic data, including a telephone number, of the people affected by the disaster, and based on this information, multiple initiatives aligned with the optimization of the flow of information were created.

<span>XML has emerged as the standard for information representation over the Internet. However, most enterprises today have long secured the use of relational databases. Thus, it is crucial to map XML data into relational data to provide seamless integration between these database infrastructures. Many mapping techniques have been proposed, yet, none has provides a unified view on these techniques. Ultimately, understanding how these techniques work is important especially if one needs to decide which technique to adopt in their organization. This paper (i) reviews on some existing model-based mapping schemes focusing on how the mapping technique works, the advantages and the disadvantages, (ii) present the simulation engine to evaluate the performance of selected mapping schemes, (iii) highlight the future direction of the related area.</span>

Social animals routinely form groups, which are thought to display emergent, collective behavior. This hypothesis suggests that animal groups should have properties at the group scale that are not directly linked to the individuals, much as bulk materials have properties distinct from those of their constituent atoms. Materials are often probed by measuring their response to controlled perturbations, but these experiments are difficult to conduct on animal groups, particularly in the wild. Here, we show that laboratory midge swarms have emergent continuum mechanical properties, displaying a collective viscoelastic response to applied oscillatory visual stimuli that allows us to extract storage and loss moduli for the swarm. We find that the swarms strongly damp perturbations, both viscously and inertially. Thus, unlike bird flocks, which appear to use collective behavior to promote lossless information flow through the group, our results suggest that midge swarms use it to stabilize themselves against environmental perturbations.
