BACKGROUND: Penetrating head injury is one of the deadliest forms of head trauma; the outcome is usually low, and patients who survive long enough require complex medical treatment. Immediate imaging assessment with appropriate management can improve patient recovery. CASE REPORT: We reported a case of head penetration trauma on a 12-year-old child with embedded cylindrical iron that enters the skull without any signs of neurological deficit. CONCLUSIONS: This case shows that aggressive diagnostic imaging and emergency care followed by proper immediate head surgery management and postoperative intensive care to monitor and intervene in possible surgical and medical complications could significantly improve patient outcomes.

The Gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most frequent site of extranodal lymphoma involvement. Most GI lymphomas are non-Hodgkin’s mature B-cell lymphomas, being diffuse large B-cell lymphoma one of the most common histologic subtypes. About 7% of GI lymphomas are located in the colon, usually at the ileocecal valve, and may grow into the terminal ileum. Abdominal pain and weight loss are common presenting symptoms, although complications such as intestinal obstruction may occur. Abdominal CT scan and barium enema are the most frequently used imaging tests for diagnosis, although colonoscopy with biopsies is required to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment includes surgery and chemotherapy with or without rituximab. Keywords: Primary colonic lymphoma; Diffuse large B-Cell Lymphoma; Obstruction; Surgery; Management.

Introduction: The current scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic is significantly different from that of the first, emergency phase. Several countries in the world are experiencing a second, or even a third, wave of contagion, while awaiting the effects of mass vaccination campaigns. The aim of this report was to provide an update of previously released recommendations on prioritization and restructuring of urological activities. Methods: A large group of Italian urologists directly involved in the reorganization of their urological wards during the first and second phase of the pandemic agreed on a set of updated recommendations for current urology practice. Results: The updated recommendations included strategies for the prioritization of both surgical and outpatient activities, implementation of perioperative pathways for patients scheduled for elective surgery, management of urological conditions in infected patients. Future scenarios with possible implementation of telehealth and reshaping of clinical practice following the effects of vaccination are also discussed. Conclusion: The present update may be a valid tool to be used in the clinical practice, may provide useful recommendations for national and international urological societies, and may be a cornerstone for further discussion on the topic, also considering further evolution of the pandemic after the recently initiated mass vaccination campaigns.

Undergoing bariatric surgery is a life-changing experience for adolescents. However, little is known about post-bariatric surgery management among Israeli adolescents. We aimed to identify the post-operative needs and support from a qualitative aspect. Seventeen adolescents who underwent bariatric surgery were interviewed by semi-structure telephone interview. The interview guide was validated by 10 content experts from different hospitals across the country. Data were collected in 2018. Analysis of the interviews revealed three major themes: “multi-disciplinary team management,” “patient satisfaction,” and “follow-up.” The “multi-disciplinary team management” theme was further divided into three major categories: “pain management,” “physiotherapy,” and “nutrition.” “Patient satisfaction” was further divided into “guidance” and “team handling” categories. The “follow-up” theme included recommendations for improvement. The analysis provides novel information about adolescents’ needs after bariatric surgery. Healthcare professionals’ awareness of the adolescents’ perspective could contribute to providing optimal post-operative care to this population.

Background: The primary purpose of this literature review is to investigate different views of elective surgery management during the COVID-19 pandemic. In other words, the guidelines about diseases prevention and their proper management during performing elective surgeries have been reviewed. Materials and Methods: Current articles related to COVID-19 and practicing elective surgeries in different remarkable EndNote X8 database journals in 2020 were retrieved. All articles referring to COVID-19 precaution rules in implementing elective surgeries were integrated into the article’s main goals. Results: All reviews showed alarming guideline steps that should be taken for validated preventing and managing elective surgeries practiced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emphasizing qualified elective surgery protocols were quoted in many articles to do elective surgeries with successful results. Conclusion: Taking effective and evidence-based steps in patients` selection, precautions, and hospitals` safety cares result in protective surgical results. Elective surgeries should be practiced in highly-equipped hospitals with extraordinary quarantine measures during a COVID-19 pandemic. Safety measures are the primary goal for patients, staff, surgeons, and other health providers before surgeons get involved with any elective surgeries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Questions of how different elective surgical operations are planned during the COVID-19 pandemic are essential controversies. As no clear answers are found to questions of how elective surgeries can be practiced during a COVID-19 pandemic, specific rules issued by the world’s most authentic surgical associations have been adopted by surgeons to operate elective surgeries.
