Evaluation of Knowledge Management

Evaluation methods are essential for the advancement of research and practice in an area. In knowledge management (KM), the process of measurement, evaluation, and development of metrics is made complex by the intangible nature of the knowledge asset. Further, the lack of standards for KM business metrics and the relative infancy of research on KM evaluation point to a need for research in this area. This chapter reviews KM evaluation methods for research and practice and identifies areas in which there is a gap in our understanding. It classifies existing research based on the units of evaluation such as user of knowledge management system (KMS), KMS, project, KM process, and organization as a whole. The importance of considering differences across industries in assessing KM is also discussed. The chapter concludes by suggesting avenues for future research in KM and KMS evaluation based on the gaps identified.

Few would refute the importance of harnessing organizational knowledge — for reuse, learning, and process improvement. Once retained in a concrete form, knowledge becomes less fragmented and more easily accessible and useable. Such a knowledge management system indeed becomes a source of competitive advantage for an organization. The key to achieving this is by retaining the existing organizational knowledge so that we do not have to rely solely on available expertise. A number of knowledge management frameworks exist which help us to classify and structure knowledge. No single framework dominates, because different organizations have different needs depending on factors such as culture and business processes. At the same time, there is a lack of case studies on how organizations create or operate such a knowledge management system. In this paper, we present a case study of a knowledge management system used in a specific context — an Australian construction company. The study shows that, at least in this particular context, a knowledge management system can operate only where it does not interfere with the existing workflow of the organization. Furthermore, the importance of retaining valuable tacit knowledge is emphasized. We also discuss the implications for future research and practice.

This article presents the empirical testing of a theoretical model of knowledge management system success. The Jennex and Olfman model of knowledge management system success was developed to reflect the DeLone and McLean model of information systems success in the knowledge management context. A structural equation model representing the Jennex and Olfman theoretical model is developed. Using data from a prior study aimed at knowledge management system use and individual learning, this model is tested. The overall fit of the model to the data is fair, although some interpretation of the estimated model parameters is problematic. The results of the model test provide limited support for the Jennex and Olfman theoretical model, but indicate the value of continued investigation and refinement of it. Suggestions for future research are provided.

Aim/Purpose: The need for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to maximize the use of their intellectual property and strategic resources for research and teaching has become ever more evident in recent years. Furthermore, little attention is paid in developing an enabling system that will facilitate knowledge transfer in the Research-Teaching Nexus (RTN). Hence, this study assesses the current state of practice in knowledge management of the nexus in higher education in Oman. It also explores the context of how Knowledge Management System (KMS) for the nexus can be designed and utilized by HEIs and challenges them to rethink their traditional approaches in managing their knowledge as-sets to boost individual and organizational learning. Background: This study provides a Knowledge Management-based framework and design of a knowledge management system that support the academic community towards the improvement of the nexus. This study sets out ideas from various academic and professional experts on how academic stakeholders in the higher education can improve and promote knowledge transfer and make better use of its knowledge and research assets for teaching and learning. It stressed the importance of having the knowledge assets or resources that can easily be pooled, accessed, and made available to its intended stakeholders. Methodology: Data were gathered from 29 out of 49 institutional quality audit reports of all HEIs in Oman. The panel comments were coded and analysed to extract valuable insights regarding the management of knowledge assets in research. Additionally, data were gathered from the institutional accreditation outcomes page of the same website. Manifest and latent content analyses were used in reporting the findings of the panel. Contribution: The study will contribute to a greater understanding and acceptance of Knowledge Management (KM) in higher education and extended the body of knowledge concerning knowledge management for the RTN. Findings: The reports revealed a very limited practice of the nexus in terms of people and culture, structure ad processes, and computing and web technologies. A few staff are involved in RTN work, there is an uneven understanding of the RTN among staff, limited joint research between staff and students are some of the reasons for this. Significantly, there is no explicit research framework or policy for the RTN, and systems and/or mechanisms are limited. Further-more, the reports did not account any use of computing and web technologies for the nexus. These limitations can lead to students with less academic, research, and graduate skills. Hence, this study presents a feature design of a KMS that incorporates various RTN best practices, as informed by the reports and literature. The design will allow the staff to utilize the research assets in the classroom, at the same time, engages students in research and scholarly under-takings. Recommendations for Practitioners: All HEIs must have a innovative system that integrates a formal agenda and approach, and set initiatives, strategies, policies, and procedures for knowledge management in utilizing research assets for teaching and learning. It must be designed so that RTN practices remain up-to-date, relevant, and responsive to the needs of the stakeholders, as well as, address academic accreditation challenges. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers can evaluate the knowledge management of RTN practices of other HEIs outside of Oman to effectively recommend the proper course of action for teaching and learning improvement. Impact on Society: This study will redefine the role and contribution of HEIs, which are key players in advancing a knowledge economy. HEIs are expected to be powerhouses where academic knowledge is discovered, created, disseminated, shared, and re-invented. They must be able to fully grasp the value of managing knowledge to be able to effect positive and purposeful change to the community. Future Research: Future work should include staff and student surveys that examine the knowledge management need of the learning organization to better inform the design of a KMS for the RTN. Thereafter, future research can test the stage to test the effectiveness of the conceptual design.

<p class="Abstract">Knowledge Management (KM) is widely discussed by researcher and attracts many enterprisers to extract, dispense and use information in a systematic way under Knowledge Management System (KMS). New technology adoption within the knowledge management system is one of the core issue, identified by researcher and underlined as future research agenda. Cloud computing becomes the most adoptable choice for enterprisers to reduce infrastructure and maintenance cost by shifting business on the cloud. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are more enthusiastic about knowledge management due to its primary goal of knowledge creation and sharing. Cloud based knowledge management attract higher education institutions by changing the educational method and objectives due to innovative trends in technology. This exploratory research based on literature review for cloud-based knowledge management, targeting higher education institutions. This study highlights the benefits and challenges associated with cloud-based knowledge management system and its impact on knowledge.</p>

Information technology is increasingly developing and has a positive impact on the world of education. The implementation of student counseling with a Knowledge Management System is one of the contributions of information technology in the world of education. Many benefits provided by the Student Counseling Knowledge Management System, in managing the knowledge needed by the counselor section to document student consultations. The development and implementation of a KMS counseling system costs more to employ professional staff to maintain and improve; KMS student counseling application; For this reason, it is necessary to design a Cloud Computing-based Student Counseling Knowledge Management System. The research method carried out in the first stage is to collect data and information about Knowledge Management and Student Counseling, and how to use it to create a Knowledge Management System Application, Student Counseling Based on cloud computing. Furthermore, conducting a literature study and literature review, system design is in the form of data architecture compounding, process design, network design, and user interface design. The design results of this system can facilitate educational institutions in conducting online cloud computing-based student counseling

Tingkat EGDI (E-Government Development Index) di Indonesia mengalami penurunan peringkat sehingga dari hal tersebut mencerminkan kondisi perkembangan E-Government di Indonesia masih belum maksimal meliputi: tingkat layanan umum, terjadi ketidak seragaman layanan umum di desa, dukungan perangkat teknologi informasi masih terbatas, belum adanya pengelolaan arsip desa, belum adanya sistem yang bisa mengelola pengetahuan, belum adanya sinergi antar perangkat desa. Desa Dukuh Karya merupakan desa yang termasuk kedalam Kabupaten Karawang, Kecamatan Rengasdengklok. Desa Dukuh Karyamemiliki penduduk sekitar 6000 dan sebagian penduduknya memiliki penghasilan dari hasil pertanian. Perlunya pengelola pengetahuan yang ada di desa sehingga bisa dikelola dengan baik dan menerapkan Knowledge Management System (KMS) berbasis sistem informasi desa bisa meningkatkan layanan umum di desa Dukuh Karya. Dengan menerapkan konsep KMS untuk bisa menghimpun dan mengelola semua pengetahuan yang ada. Membangun Knowledge, menghimpun, menyimpan dan menggunakannya sehingga pemerintah desa lebih transparan dan akuntable sehingga meningkatkan layanan public. Implementasi KMS merupakan suatu cara bagi perangkat desa untuk mengidentifikasi,     membuat, merepresentasikan, mendistribusikan, dan memungkinkan pengadaptasian wawasan dan pengalaman yang terdiri dari pengetahuan, baik yang dimiliki oleh individu maupun pengetahuan yang melekat pada proses atau standar prosedur pelayanan yang mempunyai Tujuan utama untuk memelihara dan mentransfer dengan efektif pengetahuan yang penting untuk meningkatkan kualitas pelayanan perangkat pemerintah desa kepada warganya.
