Geography and Librarianship

There are many definitions of the study of geography. Most scholars define the discipline of geography as broadly concerned with the study of the earth’s environment and interpretation of the different natural and man-made phenomena that occur across it. Geographers are interested in the interrelationships between phenomena across the earth’s landscape in individual locations and across different regions. Though considered a social science by scholars, the field of geography incorporates methods and techniques that relate the study of geography to a variety of disciplines, such as anthropology, geology, ecology, political science, transportation, health, engineering, and library and information science. The multidisciplinary nature of geography provides opportunities for scholars in the discipline to apply these geographic concepts to many areas of study. The application of geographic techniques to new areas of study has provided the impetus for proposing new hypotheses and testing theories in different disciplines. The research has advanced geographic thought beyond established paradigms, as scholars use computer applications and remotely sensed data to redefine concepts of geographic space and to study the phenomena that occur in them.

AbstractPurposeThis paper compares the paradigmatic differences between knowledge organization (KO) in library and information science and knowledge representation (KR) in AI to show the convergence in KO and KR methods and applications.MethodologyThe literature review and comparative analysis of KO and KR paradigms is the primary method used in this paper.FindingsA key difference between KO and KR lays in the purpose of KO is to organize knowledge into certain structure for standardizing and/or normalizing the vocabulary of concepts and relations, while KR is problem-solving oriented. Differences between KO and KR are discussed based on the goal, methods, and functions.Research limitationsThis is only a preliminary research with a case study as proof of concept.Practical implicationsThe paper articulates on the opportunities in applying KR and other AI methods and techniques to enhance the functions of KO.Originality/value:Ontologies and linked data as the evidence of the convergence of KO and KR paradigms provide theoretical and methodological support to innovate KO in the AI era.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to address the use of librarians as a study population in social science research outside of the field of library and information science. Additionally, it aims to make general claims about how frequently librarians have been studied compared to other occupations, as well as to identify and describe existing research that has used librarians as a study population. Design/methodology/approach – The described study had two parts. Two social science databases were searched using the subject headings “librarians” and eight additional occupations, and the results for all nine occupations were analyzed. The peer-reviewed results for “librarians” were then coded by content. The articles that used librarians as a study population were identified, reviewed and described. Findings – Although librarians, as an occupational group, possess many characteristics that should make them an ideal choice for social science research, they seem to be studied less frequently than other occupations. Research limitations/implications – Other occupational groups, such as mathematicians, were also studied infrequently. Further research might consider, more broadly, why some occupations are studied more frequently than others. Future studies might also compare librarianship to other female-dominated professions, such as nursing and education. Additionally, the subject heading “librarians” was applied to articles that studied non-professional library employees, making it difficult to isolate only articles with a focus on degreed librarians. Originality/value – Few other studies have examined social science research in which librarians are used as the study population. By focusing on how librarians are studied and written about in other fields, this paper will add to the body of literature on the professional image of librarians.

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are one of today’s popular and effective educational solutions. This presentation connects directly to another, held by our colleagues. Last spring, we have managed to create a complete e-learning package with our team at the SZTE Klebelsberg Library in order to meet the unprecedented challenges during the pandemic. We have more than 10 years of experience from organizing the Introduction to library and information science compulsory course for the students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, which means about 5-600 students per semester. In our presentation, we will share insights about our experiences managing the e-curriculum and the system of tools behind it: starting with the platform and the database of the exam questions, followed by the communication with the students and ending with the grading method. We will also address the initial extreme difficulties, emerging requests and evaluate the first year’s experiences as well.

Indian Association of Special Libraries & Information Centres (IASLIC) is a pioneer association in India that has been working for the development of library and information services since its inception in 1955. IASLIC has adopted various multifaceted activities for the healthy growth of library services and to safeguard the interest of library professionals as well as library users. IASLIC has been working to resolve various discrepancies particularly in selection of hardware and library software packages, interchange formats, training for digitization and to set a standard that ideally suits the most of the libraries in our country. After introduction of computer applications in LIS in the later part of 1980s, libraries urgently required adequate computer trained workforce to perform library services. Understanding the scenario and anticipating the future needs, IASLIC has been giving prime importance to manpower development programme. A brief overview of IASLIC activities like Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Study Circles, Special Interest Groups, publications, lectures by experts, etc. related to computer training organized by IASLIC and its role as a advisory organization to Government for making policies related to LIS has also described in this article. Neste novo fascículo trazemos os trabalhos apresentados no 2º Encontro Regional Norte-Nordeste de Educação em Ciência da Informação – 2º ERECIN N-NE, evento da Associação Brasileira de Educação em Ciência da Informação (ABECIN) que teve como tema “O desafio da inclusão na práxis pedagógica: saberes e fazeres em Ciência da Informação”. O 2º ERECIN N-NE ocorreu de 11 a 15 de junho de 2018 na Universidade Federal de Sergipe e congregou ainda o I International Forum on Library and Information Science e o XI SNAC – Seminário Nacional de Avaliação Curricular.

Abstract - It is widely accepted among feminists that feminism implies a distinctive approach to inquiry. And for some this is not just a matter of the grounds on which topics are selected for investigation, or even of the theoretical ideas that are treated as relevant. Rather, feminism is taken to carry distinctive methodological and epistemological implications (Hammersley, 1995: 45). In this paper I want to assess the arguments for a distinctively feminist methodology. My first task, though, is to provide some detail about what this is taken to entail. There are, of course, important differences among feminists who have written on this topic, and in the course of the discussion I will highlight some of these. I certainly do not want to suggest that what I am assessing is a single position, nor am I claiming to represent the basis on which most feminists actually do research. My main concern here is solely with feminist writing about methodology.
