The concept of PQoS, although in general it deals with the user satisfaction with a specific delivered/ requested service, is in practice significantly differentiated by the nature of each delivered service. This chapter reviews various existing PQoS assessment methods for video, VoIP, online games, and Web services that have been published in the literature. It then moves beyond the current PQoS assessment methods and presents novel techniques for predicting the PQoS of a multimedia service.

Purpose Web services play vital role in the development of emerging technologies such as Cloud computing and Internet of Things. Although, there is a close relationship among the discovery, selection and composition tasks of Web services, research community has treated these challenges at individual level rather to focus on them collectively for developing efficient solution, which is the purpose of this work. This paper aims to propose an approach to integrate the service discovery, selection and composition of Semantic Web services on runtime basis. Design/methodology/approach The proposed approach defined as a quality of service (QoS)-aware approach is based on QoS model to perform discovery, selection and composition tasks at runtime to enhance the user satisfaction and quality guarantee by incorporating non-functional parameters such as response time and throughput with the Web services and user request. In this paper, the proposed approach is based on ontology for semantic description of Web services, which provides interoperability and automation in the Web services tasks. Findings This work proposed an integrated framework of Web service discovery, selection and composition which supports end user to search, select and compose the Web services at runtime using semantic description and non-functional requirements. The proposed approach is evaluated by various data sets from the Web Service Challenge 2009 (WSC-2009) to show the efficiency of this work. A use case scenario of Healthcare Information System is implemented using proposed work to demonstrate the usability and requirement the proposed approach. Originality/value The main contribution of this paper is to develop an integrated approach of Semantic Web services discovery, selection and composition by using the non-functional requirements.

This paper is devoted to the problem of evaluating the quality of experience (QoE) for a given multimedia service based on the values of service parameters such as QoS indicators. This paper proposes to compare two self learning approaches for predicting the QoE index, namely the approach based on logic circuit learning and the approach based on fuzzy logic expert systems. Experimental results for comparing these two approaches with respect to the prediction ability and the performance are provided.

Discovering and redirecting multimedia services in a personalized manner is achieving increasing importance for mobile users. It is a powerful characteristic, one of the endless capabilities of mobile ecommerce technology. Regardless of their location, users are able to find and utilize services according to their needs and without complex configuration and preknowledge of service interfaces. In addition, they gain control over how, where, and when multimedia services are delivered. Mobile agent platforms may contribute significantly as a supporting component of the overall personalized multimedia service infrastructure. In order to appreciate the impact of MA-based solutions in personalized multimedia service platforms, we present a set of basic criteria related to mobile agents, which may evaluate their necessity and usage. Although it is not an exhaustive list of evaluation criteria, it is sufficient to cover a broad variety of areas under consideration regarding the involvement of mobile agents in service platforms.

Although promised for some time now, advanced multimedia services for mobile devices were not yet a reality. With IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), the fundaments for advanced multimedia services based on IP will be laid. However, there are still a lot of confusions about IMS that may hinder its success. In this chapter, a comprehensible presentation of IMS together with its potential regarding the development of advanced services is given. The chapter starts with a justification of the existence of IMS. The necessary adaptations of SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) are explained. A concise description of IMS will be provided. Next, the deployment of IMS in fixed – mobile environments will be examined thoroughly. The heart of the chapter is the presentation of the strengths of IMS, that is, what can IMS be used for. A few advanced multimedia service scenarios are given as illustration. The chapter will also consider the most important but yet neglected component of the whole IMS, namely the IMS client. The chapter concludes with a summary of the challenges that must be resolved.

The increase in multimedia traffic is likely to pose challenges for the 5G networks. The data bundles are likely to increase but also open the door to new applications which will increase the data consumption. This chapter discusses how multimedia adaptation could be improved in this context by considering the user and the contextual factors for multimedia adaptation. This could be used to deliver a more accurate trade-off between quality and price. As a result, this could reduce the network consumptions, reduce the cost the user has to pay, and improve user satisfaction with the multimedia services.

Cloud-based multimedia application has emerged as a popular service, delivering on demand media computing and storage to millions of users. Though widely deployed, the quality of service (QoS) in current cloud-based multimedia service is not satisfying, due to the varying user demands and strict response time requirements. This thesis investigates resource allocation approaches to improve QoS for cloud-based multimedia services. A service model is desired to quantify the user demands and resource allocation. To meet this need, we propose a queueing model to characterize the cloud service process, based on which we investigate the response time minimization problem and the resource cost minimization problem in single-service scenario, multi-service scenario, and priority service scenario, respectively. Dynamic workload causes the unbalanced resource utilization and local congestion in multimedia cloud. To address this issue, we propose a two-time-scale resource configuration (TRC) scheme to dynamically allocate virtual machines (VMs) to adapt to varying workload. Based on the TRC scheme, we solve the optimal VM configuration problems to minimize the resource cost or minimize the average response time for the single-site cloud scenario and the multi-site cloud scenario, respectively. We propose optimal workload scheduling schemes at user level and task level, respectively. At user level, we optimize the workload assignment to minimize the response time or minimize the resource cost. At task level, we introduce a directed acyclic graph to model the precedence constraints among tasks, and then solve the execution time minimization problems for sequential structure, parallel structure, and mixed structure, respectively. Cloud gaming is an emerging interactive multimedia service. However, current cloud gaming suffers from a high bandwidth consumption and a large response delay. We propose a hybrid streaming framework to provide a high quality cloud gaming experience. We solve the delay-rate-distortion (d-R-D) optimization problem to minimize the overall distortion under the bandwidth and response delay constraints.
