Facilitating E-Learning with Social Software

This article explores how social software tools can offer support for innovative learning methods and instructional design in general, and those related to self-organized learning in an academic context in particular. In the first section, the theoretical basis for the integration of wikis, discussion forums, and Weblogs in the context of learning are discussed. The second part presents the results of an empirical survey conducted by the authors and explores the usage of typical social software tools that support learning from a student’s perspective. The article concludes that social software tools have the potential to be a fitting technology in a teaching and learning environment.

Learning outcomes are considered to be a key tool for student-centered teaching and learning. They can be successfully implemented in teaching and learning mathematics on higher educational level and together with appropriate level of technology enhanced learning can provide the framework for successful learning process even for students that have not been primarily interested in mathematics. The aim is to present the case study of implementation of learning outcomes and e-learning in several mathematical courses at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics of the University of Zagreb. First of all, there are examples of mathematical courses in the first year since the first study year is crucial for retaining students. Further, there are mathematical courses taught at higher years of undergraduate study and the first year of graduate study. Again, educational process is appropriately supported by ICT and executed through blended e-learning, as well as the use of social software.

With the growth of e-learning discussion forums have been widely used to promote interaction and collaboration between students and teachers asynchronously. Despite the benefits to the teaching and learning process the use of the forums in the e-learning can mean overload for the teachers/tutors given the large amount of information generated in the debates. Taking into consideration the importance of the teaching performance in the follow-up of the discussions and consequent help to the students of the e-learning, the teacher/tutor overload is considered a problem. Therefore, this study presents a system that integrates Natural Language Processing and Genetic Algorithm to classify postings from discussion forums such as Doubt, Neutral comment or Answer. As a way of evaluating the performance of the proposed system, experiments were conducted in three databases, with a total of 1769 posts, arriving at the average F-measures of 0.981, 0.997 and 0.988 in the classification of posts as Doubt, Neutral comment and Answer, respectively. After the experiments the results were analyzed by means of the z statistical test with a confidence interval of 95%. The results show the potential of the proposed system to identify post genres, from discussion forums, and the teacher/tutor can use it as a support to direct their efforts, for example, to students with any doubts in the current discussion.

<span>It would be difficult to argue that the use of online technology to support teaching and learning has not undergone significant change in the last two decades. Recently, with the promotion of social software technologies such as blogs, wikis, podcasts and virtual classrooms, we have seen the emergence of the idea of e-learning 2.0. That is, the use of online technology to support communication, collaboration and knowledge building which are consistent with constructivist principles. The research reported here was conducted in the context of a blended learning approach that incorporates wiki technology and face to face contact to support problem based and group based learning and assessment in a teacher education program at RMIT University, Australia. The results of a post-course survey of learners are used to describe the learners' experience of access to and use of wikis, and their attitudes towards the use of wikis in their own teaching practice over the following 12 months. This discussion is undertaken with consideration to the benefits and difficulties associated with problem based and group based learning and assessment. The learners' attitudes towards the potential use of wikis in their own practices are explored in terms of implementation and professional development.</span>

Teaching and learning mathematics at university level is increasingly being supported by Learning Management Systems. In this chapter, we report from the e-learning initiative, DELTA, and in doing so we aim to describe how formulas, drawings, and other mathematical representations influence student communication. We describe a practice that combines handwriting and discussion forums facilitated by a Learning Management System (LMS). We have experienced lack of student activity in the discussion forums and introducing a new LMS (Moodle) with improved formula editor capabilities into the environment, does not seem to considerably improve the situation, whereas a scanner-based handwritten communication seems to successfully support the assignment communication between the students and the teacher.

Utilization of e-learning can improve learning effectiveness and flexibility. Features of e-learning that are important in teaching and learning activities are tasks features, discussion forums and discussion face to face in a video conference. BINUS Online Learning is a program that offers students to conduct online lectures. Online BINUS need to think about software and hardware that must be provided in a tablet. Therefore, this study will analyze the use of the tablet which will be used for student BINUS Online Learning. The purpose of this study is to analyze the needs, and then determines the specifications of the tablet to be used as a replacement for netbook facility at Binus Online Learning. The research methodology used include, among others: Data Collection Methods (by conducting surveys), and the analysis method that consists of literature study and analysis of the system running, by using the rich picturer.
