This paper discusses the use of wiki technology to provide a navigation structure for the online version of the Mary MacQueen Scrap Book, which contains newspaper clippings about the Victorian artist. After outlining the architecture of the wiki, the navigation structure is discussed and several questions are posed: is the navigation structure an index? If so, what type? Or is it just a linkage structure or topic map? Does such a distinction really matter? Are these definitions in reality function-based?

This chapter examines the policy question of how to assure quality in an open system, using the crowdsourced online encyclopaedia Wikipedia as a case study. The history of Wikipedia’s development out of another online encyclopaedia, Nupedia, is sketched, with a description of how wiki technology allowed collaborative authoring. Wikipedia compares favourably with expert-written reference books, and has helped populate the Linked Data Web via DBpedia. However, to produce good content, and minimize hoaxes and trolling controversies such as the GamerGate affair, it needs a hierarchical meritocratic management system. This has resulting in tensions, particularly along gender lines, and relatively small numbers of women participate. However, the system has if anything become more hierarchical during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it has worked hard to eliminate misinformation.

Wiki technology has become very popular during the last years and is used in many fields. It enables the collaborative creation and management of content retaining the history of changes. There is abundant wiki-based content on the web covering a large number of subjects. A significant contribution of wikis involves education. Under certain conditions, technology may enhance the learning process due to the unique features it encompasses. In this context, wikis may prove very helpful as they provide the infrastructure for collaborative learning approaches and the development of online learning communities. This chapter discusses main features of wikis, wiki features specifically required in education, and typical uses of wikis in education. Representative examples of successful wikis are presented. Future research directions are also outlined.

The article discusses the issues of the methodology for organizing project work of primary school students when mastering a foreign language using wiki technology - one of the types of Web-2 services. The article presents the description of the project method as an actual and effective means of teaching a foreign language in the context of distance learning. Based on the analysis of scientific literature and empirical research methods (observation, questioning, experimental teaching) the algorithm of actions when working on the project was determined, the specificity of the application of the project method based on wiki technology was revealed. The developed methodological model for organizing project activities made it possible to reveal the potential advantages of wiki technology as an effective tool for solving the problem of motivating students to learn a foreign language, developing their social, socio-cultural and general educational competencies, and creative abilities.

Digital technologies quickly and organically entered the life of a modern person. Moreover, the informatization of society has influenced the digitalization of education. Over the past 10–15 years, a solid body of scientific methodic works has appeared on the use of modern digital technologies in the development of foreign language speech skills and the development of students’ language skills, the development of their socio-cultural, intercultural, pragmatic and other types of competencies. Despite the linguodidactic potential and innovativeness of new methods of language teaching based on digital technologies, until 2019 the volume of use of information and communication technologies in the educational process was small. The 2019 coronavirus pandemic forced scientists and practicing teachers in extreme conditions to realistically assess the richness of the choice of digital technologies and rethink the need for each specific technology to solve specific educational problems. This is how the process of “withering away” of some technologies or “absorption” of some technologies by others began. A review of methodic works on the development of methods of foreign language teaching based on e-mail, web forum, blog technology, social service “Twitter”, wiki technology, podcasts and electronic text corpus is carried out. As a result, a conclusion is made about the relevance of four digital technologies that are integrated into modern university educational platforms. These include: blog technology, wiki technology, podcasts, and electronic corpus.

Increasingly, firms follow the strategy of open business model innovation via the Internet. In this form of digital innovation management, firms make use of Internet platforms that allow them to integrate external customers and other stakeholders for (re-)innovation of their business models. However, the used IT tools on these Internet platforms suffer from not being able to merge the content of multiple users in an adequate way, thus the resulting business models suffer from low degrees of quality. Against this backdrop, in this research, we propose to equip these Internet platforms with a wiki technology. This would allow users to add to each other’s content, to make changes or to correct mistakes. In our action design research (ADR), we could empirically validate that this leads to a higher quality in terms of business models’ degree of elaboration. Since research that focusses on the design of Internet-based open BMI is still neglected, our research contributes to the literature base by being the first that answers ongoing open calls for research on this phenomenon of interest.

A potential new generation computing environment is emerging which combines wiki technology with semantic web concepts. This has brought about the fusion of the wiki execution ecosystem, a semantic web for model-driven applications, and a high-level language as an extension to wiki text for accelerated development. Semantic MediaWiki provides this platform and a fragment of a health record, including allergy intolerance as structured in HL7 FHIR with terminology bindings to SNOMED CT and to HL7 terminologies was developed by the author in a short timeframe (approximately 10 hours). The system navigates around the health record and controls the entry of terms in the record from controlled ValueSets. All terminologies and ValueSets are integrated into the prototype.
