Manufacturing is a prime generator of wealth and is critical in establishing a sound basis for economic growth. Manufacturing is also the cornerstone of all economic activities, and efforts to continuously advance manufacturing technology are therefore vital to a richer and more stable future. Intelligent Manufacturing (IM), believed to be the next generation advanced manufacturing paradigm is extensively investigated by industry and academia. In this chapter, we firstly recall the course of manufacturing development and summarize the characteristics of the four revolutions in this course. Subsequently, the broad sense of ‘manufacturing’ is articulated and the characteristics of manufacturing activities in the operation of manufacturing processes are depicted. The differences and relationships between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Manufacturing Intelligence (MI) are then presented. The background of intelligent manufacturing, the attributes of intelligent manufacturing technology and the future development of intelligent manufacturing system are described. Lastly, a summary of this chapter is given.

A framework for building EDM collaborative manufacturing system using multi-agent technology to support organizations characterized by physically distributed, enterprise-wide, heterogeneous intelligent manufacturing system over Internet is proposed. According to the characteristics of agile EDM collaborative manufacturing system(AEDMCMS), the agent technology is combined with Petri net in order to analyze the model. Based on the basic Petri Net, the definition is extended and the Agent-oriented Petri net (APN) is proposed. AEDMCM is turned into the model of Petri Net which is suitable to the analysis and optimization of manufacturing processes.

Its manufacturing intelligence has become the inevitable choice for the development of the industry. In this paper, the key manufacturing technology of numerical control tools and the application of intelligence in numerical control tool manufacturing are described. the development trend of intelligent manufacturing of numerical control tools is analyzed.

Virtual manufacturing technology in being one of the best technology recently, it’s manufacturing philosophy based on information integration. Manufacturing function/concept/core technology/application of VRM (hereafter referred as virtual reality manufacturing technology) as are fully described in this essay. Nowadays, manufacturing industry is being marching rapidly towards precion/automation/flexibility/integration/information/intelligence with the time going on. Manufacturing Intelligence (MI) focuses on how to adopt artificial intelligence and computing intelligence methods to solve problems in digital manufacturing, such as intelligent digital scheduling, intelligent digital designing, intelligent digital machining, intelligent digital controlling, intelligent digital process planning, intelligent digital diagnosis and maintenance. In order to meet the needs of a changing market, manufacturing systems have been in a constant process of development and the pursuit of perfection. In this chapter, the various characteristics of the manufacturing industry in the 21st century are analyzed from the perspective of society, market, product, enterprise and manufacturing technology. Then a brief review of MI in previous chapters is presented. The trends and prospects of MI, adapted to the development of manufacturing, are then discussed, followed lastly by a summary of this chapter.

In the background of global manufacturing industry moving towards digitization, networking and intelligence, based on the deep integration of new generation information communication technology and advanced manufacturing technology, the manufacturing characteristics of complex electronic equipment such as variety, changing batch, updating and replacing quickly, multi-disciplinary coupling and supply chain complex are analyzed. On this basis, the innovation characteristics of complex electronic equipment in the whole life cycle of product manufacturing such as technology application, R&D mode, production organization and management decision are studied. The main challenges in the rapid development of intelligent manufacturing of complex electronic equipment are further pointed out. In the future, with the continuous progress of information technology and advanced manufacturing technology, the current challenges of intelligent manufacturing of complex electronic equipment will be solved.
