In machining process, machining accuracy of part mainly depends on the position and orientation of the cutting tool with respect to the workpiece which is influenced by errors of machine tools and cutter-workpiece-fixture system. A systematic modeling method is presented to integrate the two types of error sources into the deviation of the cutting tool relative to the workpiece which determines the accuracy of the machining system. For the purpose of minimizing the machining error, an adjustment strategy of tool path is proposed on the basis of the generation principle of the cutter location source file (CLSF) in modern computer aided manufacturing (CAM) system by means of the prediction deviation, namely, the deviation of the cutting tool relative to the workpiece in computer numerical control (CNC) machining operation. The resulting errors are introduced as adjustment values to adjust the nominal tool path points from cutter location source file from commercial CAM system prior to machining. Finally, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the prediction model and the adjustment technique by two study cases.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a novel methodology to produce a large boat hull with a foam additive manufacturing (FAM) process. To respond to shipping market needs, this new process is being developed. FAM technology is a conventional three-dimensional (3D) printing process whereby layers are deposited onto a high-pressure head mounted on a six-axis robotic arm. Traditionally, molds and masters are made with computer numerical control (CNC) machining or finished by hand. Handcrafting the molds is obviously time-consuming and labor-intensive, but even CNC machining can be challenging for parts with complex geometries and tight deadlines. Design/methodology/approach The proposed FAM technology focuses on the masters and molds, that are directly produced by 3D printing. This paper describes an additive manufacturing technology through which the operator can create a large part and its tools using the capacities of this new FAM technology. Findings The study shows a comparison carried out between the traditional manufacturing process and the additive manufacturing process, which is illustrated through an industrial case of application in the manufacturing industry. This work details the application of FAM technology to fabricate a 2.5 m boat hull mold and the results show the time and cost savings of FAM in the fabrication of large molds. Originality/value Finally, the advantages and drawbacks of the FAM technology are then discussed and novel features such as monitoring system and control to improve the accuracy of partly printed are highlighted.

In order to reduce the tracking error of the computer numerical control (CNC) feed system and improve the CNC machining accuracy, a novel prediction model is proposed based on fuzzy C-means robust variational echo state network. Firstly, the feed speed time series is clustered, and then reconstructed for different categories. The multi-stage robust prediction models are established to realize the multi-state robust prediction of the CNC machining feed velocity to reduce the tracking error of the feed system. Finally, the reference and actual time series with different feed speed are used to verify the established models. The results show that the proposed method can reduce the tracking error and realize the effective prediction of the time series of the feed system.

Abstract Contour error compensation of the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine tool is a vital technology that can improve machining accuracy and quality. To achieve this goal, the tracking error of a feeding axis, which is a dominant issue incurring the contour error, should be firstly modeled and then a proper compensation strategy should be determined. However, building the precise tracking error prediction model is a challenging task because of the nonlinear issues like backlash and friction involved in the feeding axis; besides, the optimal compensation parameter is also difficult to determine because it is sensitive to the machining tool path. In this paper, a set of novel approaches for contour error prediction and compensation is presented based on the technologies of deep learning and reinforcement learning. By utilizing the internal data of the CNC system, the tracking error of the feeding axis is modeled as a Nonlinear Auto-Regressive Long-Short Term Memory (NAR-LSTM) network, considering all the nonlinear issues of the feeding axis. Given the contour error as calculated based on the predicted tracking error of each feeding axis, a compensation strategy is presented with its parameters identified efficiently by a Time-Series Deep Q-Network (TS-DQN) as designed in our work. To validate the feasibility and advantage of the proposed approaches, extensive experiments are conducted, testifying that, our approaches can predict the tracking error and contour error with very good precision (better than about 99% and 90% respectively), and the contour error compensated based on the predicted results and our compensation strategy is significantly reduced (about 70%~85% reduction) with the machining quality improved drastically (machining error reduced about 50%).

Manufacturing is a prime generator of wealth and is critical in establishing a sound basis for economic growth. Manufacturing is also the cornerstone of all economic activities, and efforts to continuously advance manufacturing technology are therefore vital to a richer and more stable future. Intelligent Manufacturing (IM), believed to be the next generation advanced manufacturing paradigm is extensively investigated by industry and academia. In this chapter, we firstly recall the course of manufacturing development and summarize the characteristics of the four revolutions in this course. Subsequently, the broad sense of ‘manufacturing’ is articulated and the characteristics of manufacturing activities in the operation of manufacturing processes are depicted. The differences and relationships between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Manufacturing Intelligence (MI) are then presented. The background of intelligent manufacturing, the attributes of intelligent manufacturing technology and the future development of intelligent manufacturing system are described. Lastly, a summary of this chapter is given.

Intelligent manufacturing as the development direction of the new generation manufacturing system has become a hot research topic. Computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools are the core manufacturing equipment in discrete manufacturing enterprises, collecting and monitoring the data is an important part of intelligent manufacturing workshops. It has a great significance to improve the production efficiency of enterprises and eliminate information islands. The purpose of this article is to solve the problems of data acquisition and monitoring of CNC machine tools in the manufacturing workshop of enterprises. This article uses FOCAS data acquisition method to research and develop the data acquisition and monitoring system of CNC machine tools in intelligent manufacturing workshop. The research results show that the equipment information model based on MTConnect protocol and FOCAS can solve the data acquisition and storage functions of CNC machine tools well. Using the object-oriented Petri net model, it can solve various uncertain factors in numerical control (NC) machining tasks and realize the monitoring function of CNC machining tasks in the workshop. Based on the NC program analysis, the calculation method of machining time in the NC program can determine the preventive maintenance cycle of the machine based on the machine fault information. Based on VS2013 development environment, Qt application framework and SQL Server 2012 database, the numerical control machine tool data acquisition and monitoring prototype system was developed, and the system was verified in the workshop to prove the effectiveness of the system.

Abstract Based on the characteristics of intelligent manufacturing and the theory of technology diffusion, this paper constructs a cellular automata model with government support policy, information exchange, technology maturity, diffusion intermediary, and market competition as the influencing factors and analyzes the influence mechanism of the first three main factors on the diffusion of intelligent manufacturing technology in industrial clusters using MATLAB. This paper also makes an empirical analysis of the diffusion of intelligent manufacturing technology in the bearing industry cluster in Xinchang County and finds that the results are basically consistent by comparing the simulation data with the fit degree of the real data. In this paper, the diffusion intermediary and government support policy have the greatest influence on the application of intelligent manufacturing in small- and medium-sized enterprises, and the model proposed in this paper is effective.
