Businesses today must not only be concerned with their day-to-day operations and the making of profit, but also with a set of challenges related to the public perception, the environment, and the costs of energy consumption. The image of the company from the perspective of customers and the public in general must be carefully monitored as it relates to the environment and the use of natural resources and energy. The demonstration of effective strategies that allow for “greener” and more ecological awareness, will gain the respect of customers, businesses, stockholders, and other concerned groups. The protection of our environment is also a major agenda of firms today. This paper discusses how “Green IT” along with the concepts of “Virtualization” can provide for better organizational, operational, and environmental outcomes.

Green Information Technology (IT) has emerged as a crucial topic for environmentally and sustainability development. At the same time, Green IT impacts the organisation as well. Studies show there is a lack of a proposed framework in the Green IT literature. As the IT industry is one of the significant sectors supporting the Green Technology Policy, this study objective is to identify the factors rendered in the Green IT adoption and examine the factors that drive the adoption of Green IT in Malaysia. The study referred to the case study to show the most important factors rendered in Green IT adoption in the public sector and the private sector in Malaysia. A qualitative method was applied through a semi-structured interview by using open-ended questions as a guideline with five organisations from the public sector and the private sector. This study prioritises the explanation building as a specific approach to analysis. Results show that there are five factors rendered in Green IT adoption in Malaysia: environmental factor, cost factor, organisational factor, technological factor, and business opportunity factor. This study benefits policymaker, organisations, and other researchers to support Malaysia’s pledge to reduce its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission intensity of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by up to 45% by 2030.

Increasing pollution levels, consumption of electricity as well as other natural resources, and the continuous buildup of outdated computer systems in landfills are plaguing the computer systems industry. Green information technology (IT) is a sensible solution providing multiple resources and alternatives for day-to-day computer use that could reduce the negative impact on our environment without reducing the effectiveness and capabilities of the technology. This chapter describes the struggle of adoption and provides basic concepts and sustainable solutions of green IT for businesses and individuals.

Green information technology is resource efficient and effective consumption through the use of IT infrastructures to address environmental sustainability. This study aims to understand the level of awareness and practices of IT professionals towards GIT in organizations. A survey questionnaire was used, the study found that participants have a high awareness and practices of Green IT covering the efficient use of computing resources, energy conservation in an office environment, responsible disposal of electronic wastes, and demonstrate an individual contribution and commitment to GIT adoption practices in organizations. The study also found that male IT professionals have better awareness of GIT in organizations. The awareness and practices of IT professionals in GIT offers direction for organizations to strategically integrate GIT within their core business objectives and activities to attain environmental sustainability. Practical and theoretical implications are presented.

O objetivo do estudo é analisar as dificuldades e as práticas existentes para a adoção da Tecnologia da Informação Verde (TI Verde) nas empresas. Traz inicialmente um breve histórico do conceito de TI Verde, a partir do pressuposto que as posturas empresariais ecologicamente corretas referentes à tecnologia da informação entram em conflito com as necessidades das empresas em expandir os seus parques tecnológicos para garantir a competitividade que tem as suas bases na inovação. Busca-se contribuir com os estudos acerca dos maiores problemas ambientais no mundo atual: o alto consumo de matérias-primas não renováveis, lixo tecnológico descartado inadequadamente e liberação de poluentes que contaminam o solo e os rios. A metodologia utilizada foi quantitativa e qualitativa: foram aplicados 24 (vinte e quatro) questionários para gerentes e técnicos da área de TI de empresas de diversos ramos de atuação na cidade de Salvador–Bahia. Apesar da maioria dos entrevistados possuírem conceito formado sobre a TI Verde, percebe-se que a maioria das organizações não a priorizam na sua pauta de estratégias e práticas de responsabilidade sócio-ambiental. Abstract The main goal of this paper is to analyze practices and troubles to adopt Green Information Technology (Green IT) in companies. First, it brings a short history of the Green IT concept, presuming that IT ecological actions come into conflict with corporate needs of spreading their technological devices to assure competitiveness, based on innovation. The present article aims to cooperate with the studies about one of the most important environmental troubles nowadays: the over-consumption of not renewable inputs, improper destination of e-waste and pollution emission contaminating soil and rivers. The methodology used was quantitative and qualitative: 24 (twenty-four) questionnaires for IT managers and technicians working at companies of several segments in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil were applied. Despite most interviewees have a pre-established concept of Green IT, the organizations don’t prioritize it in their strategies and practices of social and environmental responsibility. The concept of Green Information Technology (Green IT) has been widely discussed in recent times, but the question of how a firm can afford to implement Green IT in both IT and other business operations has yet to be examined. In addition, the question of whether Green IT has made any significant contributions towards competitive advantage in organizations has not yet been studied. This study attempts to bridge this gap by viewing Green IT capability from the lens of Natural Resource-Based View. The two constructs derived from this theory, namely, as pollution prevention and product stewardship are discussed in this paper. Its application is extended into the IT context with reference to Green IT literature. This occurs among an early review of the utilisation of these constructs particularly for Green IT process management. The implications of the outcome of this study, both for the IS researchers and for the practicing managers, are discussed.

Information technology (IT) moves at a fast rate of utilizing modern electrical equipment. Thus, all the sectors of the world economy do face challenges to deal with the environmental problems and their impacts on the work environment and green information technology (GIT) become important to play its role in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner (McCabe, 2009). In Sri Lanka, banks recently shift towards green IT (GIT) practices. However, there is a gap in the literature, and empirical investigations regarding the relationships among GIT practices, environmental performances of banks (EPB) and employees’ attitudes on GIT (EAG). Hence, this study aims to explore the relationship between GIT in place and EPB and to assess the possible mediating role of EAG in the relationship between GIT and EPB. The analyses reveal that GIT practices have a positive relationship to and significant impact on EPB. The study also confirms the mediating partial role of EAG in the relationship between GIT and EPB. This study especially contributes to empirically understand the same as an addition to fill the literature gap in relation to GIT, EPB, and EAG.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the key Green information technology (IT) components needed to be considered by government-based institutions and to develop a Green policy framework based on the identified Green IT components to facilitate government-based institutions achieve sustainability. Design/methodology/approach The Green policy framework and associated propositions are developed to facilitate government-based institutions achieve sustainability. In addition, a case study approach was adopted to verify the proposed framework based on data collected from open-ended interviews and sustainability report documents from two government-based institutions in Malaysia. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed based on content analysis using descriptive and narrative method to present the findings of Green IT components adopted in the selected case studies. Findings Findings show that sustainability considerations are increasingly being deliberated in institutions. Moreover, finding from the analyzed data also indicates that there is an increased interest towards implementation of Green IT initiatives for developing, operating and usage by practitioners and staff within government-based institutions. Research limitations/implications Findings from this study suggest that the Green policy framework components have implications to support only government-based institutions address environmental, social and economic-related issues. Practical implications The developed Green IT components serve as robust indicators or constructs to measure management of Green IT initiatives currently being implemented and thereby provide a framework for sustainability committee members to benchmark their current Green IT practice. Social implications This study provides an agenda to guide government-based institutions achieve sustainability goals. Accordingly, government-based institutions can adopt the framework’s components to evaluate their progress, hence improving their target of attaining sustainability. Besides, this research provides an approach for assessing current practices adopted in government-based institutions against the Green IT components. Originality/value The originality of this study is attributed to the fact that this study presents Green IT policy framework to be considered by government-based institutions in achieving sustainability. The framework provides an agenda to simultaneously consider all three dimensions of sustainability the people, planet and profit (social, environment and economic). Moreover, this is one of the first studies to explore Green IT practices in government-based institutions.
