Higher education institutions and their engineering departments have a vital role in fulfilling the new requirements and opportunities of the information and communication technologies (ICT). Therefore, understanding the guidelines to adapt to the new ICT innovations in relation with the Fourth Industrial Revolution such as the internet of things, cloud computing, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence is vital to determine the emerging patterns in their development, delivery, implementation, and assessment. This study aims to define the new educational requirements in engineering education based on the developments of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Conducting an in-depth analysis of the current literature revealed that although these emerging technologies have been widely used, there are some challenges being faced for their effective use in engineering education. Therefore, the authors provide some guidelines and discuss possible research directions for the use of these technologies in near future.

PurposeThe objective of this research is twofold. First, we aim at identifying the pairwise relationships between Lean Production (LP) practices and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies. Second, based on these results, we propose a framework for Lean Automation (LA) implementation, in which I4.0 technologies are integrated into LP practices.Design/methodology/approachTo achieve that, a cross-sector survey was performed with 147 manufacturers that are undergoing a LP implementation aided by novel information and communication technologies from I4.0. Multivariate data analysis was applied in order to underpin the proposed framework for LA.FindingsFindings indicate that I4.0 technologies are positively correlated with LP practices, providing evidence to bear the proposition of a LA framework that can potentially overcome traditional barriers and challenges of a LP implementation.Originality/valueAs previous studies have approached LA implementation from a narrow perspective or including a limited set of LP practices and I4.0 technologies, the proposition of an integrated framework unfolds a wider range of synergistic implementations that may corroborate to a holistic approach for continuous improvement in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

The objective of the chapter is to describe the main competences to be developed in digital natives at the postgraduate level, based on the characteristics generated by information and communication technologies in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. From this perspective, individual knowledge, experience, initiative, and creativity are recognized as the unlimited resource of organizations and countries, so the talent of the people is the basis of the competitiveness and survival of organizations of any type. Three axes of training at the graduate level are identified: social competences, global competitions of investigation and innovation, and digital competitions with base in the inverted learning and gamification.

The monograph published in English, which is the result of the project "Transformers - for the future labor market", takes up important issues of changes in the labor market in the context of technological development, which recently focuses on topics such as labor market polarization, automation and robotization , the effects of the fourth industrial revolution. The main threads discussed in the following chapters of the monograph relate to social and economic changes conditioned by the development of technology, in particular information and communication technologies, as well as the fourth industrial revolution, referred to as Industry 4.0. The main areas of analysis in the project "Transformers - for the future labor market" were presented in a synthetic way: the future of skills and competences, the future of professions and jobs, challenges related to education, as well as the conclusions drawn from desk-research analyzes and focus groups.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the development of any economy. The disruptive technologies of the fourth industrial revolution have ignited the flexibility and dynamic nature of the market. Industry 4.0 requires firms to deliver highly customized and high-quality products at low price and on time. However, the SMEs sector is not performing up to the standard, which is quite disturbing in the current economic situation of the country. This chapter has elaborated the application of advanced information and communication technologies of Industry 4.0 in the context of SMEs. Based on the requirements of Industry 4.0, this chapter has also explored the challenges faced by SMEs in Pakistan. The SMEs in Pakistan are presently coping the challenges such as limited access to finance, the undue compliance and excessive paperwork imposed by regulators, lacking mechanism of talent management, lacking skilled workforce, absence of networking and collaboration, mismanagement of raw material, and insufficient infrastructure.
