Business strategists are well aware of the work of Italian statesman Machiavelli and Chinese scholar Sun Tzu. Their books are increasingly read and appreciated by researchers and managers around the world. Unfortunately, most academics and practitioners appear to have overlooked another eastern scholar of similar value who was writing in ancient India around the same time that Sun Tzu was writing in China. This article presents the wisdom of Chanakya, an ancient Indian statesman and scholar, to business executives and scholars. His book Arthashastra (The Science of Wealth) written about 2500 years ago as a treatise on political governance can contribute immensely to business competitiveness in today's world, both domestically and internationally. Understanding Chanakya's work can help Indian companies grow and succeed vis-à-vis their competitors domestically and internationally as well as Western companies interested in doing business in India.

Identity acts as a nucleus to the subject's references, their memories, their choices of life, to the construction of their history. Identity is, therefore, a minimal cellular basis from which life develops in its poetics of creation. The construction of identity thus has potential for the development of a critique, the establishment of a grammar of rules and conditions, for standing before the world. The path towards emancipation implies in exercising an external look at one's identity, the inherent existing narrative, to discover the paradigm of the minimum base from which one's life develops. With the increasing complexity of the postcolonial world, no straight or easy answer is at hand. The effort should draw towards the construction of conceptual tools that can enable reflection and critique. The humanities education, is one possible tool towards autonomy and emancipation once it encourages knowledge, construction and appraisal. The reflections brought to light through this work intends to fertilize the discussions about identity construction in the Brazilian present day context, characterized by a discourse that foster ruptures and decreases the possibilities of one’s identity. For this purpose, the current challenge of emancipation, will be developed through 6 analytical semantic dimensions which express the diversity and complexity of the actual scenario: Understanding identity, (CIAMPA, 1987; RICOEUR, 1990), as the synthetic goal of existence has the dynamism to give new possibilities to the frontier-men (HARTOG, 2004; LEVINÁS, 1972), whose challenge is the gain of consciousness of one’s own movement in the world. Marked by perversity (HONNETH, 2003) the present world enforces political, social, motivational, and subjective domination (CASTORIADIS, 1987). This scenario compels the frontier-men towards an emptied signifier alienating his possibilities of recognition. The search for emancipation (HABERMAS, 1983) asks for a critical look at the current formation of people's strategic thinking.

Adoption of innovation strategies in entrepreneurship is an age old phenomenon, but inclusion of open innovation or collaborative innovation strategies in the business processes is a newly evolved concept. By far, most research reveals that the majority of successful global ventures are adopting open innovation strategies in their business proceedings. However, despite their contribution to entrepreneurship and national economy, the small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) are well below the expectation level in terms of acquiring this newly emerged trend of doing business. Moreover, not much research is being conducted to investigate SMEs potencies, expectations, delivery channels and intricacies around the adoption, nourishment and dissemination of open innovation strategies. This research proposes a contextual framework leading to an operational framework to explore the lifecycle of open innovation strategy management activities focusing technology transfer (inbounds or outwards). It discusses a few issues on future research in empowering SMEs through utilization of open innovation strategies.

Purpose The extant research on early internationalizing ventures focuses primarily on these ventures’ start-up phase or their initial internationalization. Scarce attention is paid to how these ventures grow, if at all, beyond their start-up phase or initial internationalization phase. This paper aims to explore how international new ventures transition from the internationalizing phase to the phase of being international, and whether they actually made it to that phase. Understanding whether and how these ventures reach their “made-it” point would contribute to our understanding of how early internationalization affects a venture’s survival and growth. In this, the authors draw on the dynamic capability theory of the firm. Design/methodology/approach Given the scarcity of theoretical understanding and empirical evidence in this substantive area of research, the authors adopted a multiple case study methodology for the purpose of theory building. Following an intensity sampling strategy, they purposefully selected information-rich, but not extreme two-case companies. The authors initially collected unobtrusive data in the form of running records and mass-media news reports from the inception of the case companies. They then conducted in-depth interviews with key decision makers of the case companies, namely, their co-founders and CEOs. Critical incident technique guidelines for data analysis were employed. Findings Grounded in data, the following constructs emerged related to value creation: strategic experimentation, gestalt tensions and legitimacy lies. Entrepreneurs experiment with and reconfigure their venture at several levels: goal (vision), decision (strategic) and behavioral (tactical) levels of the organizational gestalt to reach a threshold level of practiced activity. Entrepreneurs’ strategic experimentation efforts are fueled by tensions that exist at these three levels of the organizational gestalt. During this experimentation process, entrepreneurs may tell legitimacy lies to legitimate their ventures in the eyes of their stakeholders. Research limitations/implications Given the instrument the authors used to explore the issues and concerns identified above, the results are limited in scope. However, a number of questions and conjectures are put forward to guide future research in this currently under-researched area of international entrepreneurship. The authors have also suggested using the concept of turning point in future research to advance the understanding of the dynamic capability view of international new ventures. Practical implications Understanding whether and how international new ventures reach their made-it points would contribute to the understanding of how early internationalization affects international new ventures’ organizational survival and growth. Originality/value The authors have put forward the concept of the made-it point to aid international entrepreneurship researchers to investigate the continued growth, evolutionary patterns and the organizational survival of international new ventures.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of economic and social factors influencing the logistics cost for the Indian steel sector and its relationship with the service quality. Design/methodology/approach – A structured questionnaire survey is used for the data collection in this research. The questionnaire included different elements of logistics cost on inbound and outbound logistics, and service quality. Findings – This research identified various significant elements of logistics cost for Indian steel sector and observed its relationship with transportation cost, warehousing cost and administrative cost. The findings of this study showed positive relationship between logistics cost and service quality. Research limitations/implications – The data for this study is cross-sectional; it is recommended that future studies can gather it longitudinally. This will help in gaining deeper understanding of the cause and effect relationship among the variables. The findings of this study are very useful in identifying the suitable training directions. Practical implications – Logistics is very critical factor in deciding the competitiveness of steel sector globally. Particularly for steel manufacturing the inbound logistics is more critical as compared to outbound logistics both in terms of volumes and costs. Social implications – For the Indian steel manufacturing companies, the logistics cost is very high as compared to other developed countries. Total logistics cost on inbound movements taken into consideration is around 16-18 per cent of material turn-over whereas; the world average is around 7-8 per cent. Originality/value – To the best knowledge of the authors, this study is the first attempt to study the relationship of logistics cost elements on the service quality in the context of Indian steel manufacturing sector. The logistics cost in steel industry is considered as one of the top performance measurement of the entrepreneur in this research.
