The COVID-19 pandemic created a paradigm shift in the way educators employ active learning strategies. In this chapter, the authors discuss how engaging and innovative learning strategies were developed to teach baccalaureate-level nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial focus is on the teaching and learning strategies created for first-semester students who are developing foundational nursing skills and concepts. The discussion transitions to complex strategies developed for fourth-semester students, solidifying critical thinking and clinical judgment skills. Highlighted are active learning strategies used in the classroom, skills lab, and simulated clinical environment. These promote clinical judgment and present practical direction for adapting technology to provide an engaging learning environment. Throughout the chapter, the authors use several strategies to showcase how a nursing program responded to COVID-19 restrictions, including active learning and technology strategies, and how they can be applied across a curriculum using varying levels of technology.

Introduction: Portfolio is one of the active learning strategies for clinical education. By making portfolio, students present their own projects including clinical learning activities at or near the end of a clinical course. The purpose of this study was to investigate the application of this tool in nursing education in order to know the advantage and limitation of the tool. Methods: This study reviews the literature published in Farsi and English with the possibility of accessing the full text of the article over the past five years related to the use of portfolio in nursing education. A literature review was done by searching the keywords portfolio and nursing in the databases including; Web of Science, and ProQuest and scientific search engine such as Google Scholar. After removing repetitive and non-related items, 17 articles were selected accordingly. Result: The review of literature suggests that the portfolio is used in different schools and courses of nursing students with different goals such as assessment, evaluation, training; and performance improvement. Using portfolios has some advantages and limitations that need to be determinate for designing and implementing portfolios. Some benefits of portfolios were development of skills, fostering active learning, improvement of clinical competencies, and satisfaction of students from assessment and academic achievement. Its limitations include the lack of clarity and time constraints for completing it. Conclusion: The portfolio facilitates the monitoring of nurses' professional development and facilitates knowledge management. Therefore, designing and using this tool is recommended to improve the clinical competence of nursing students in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies in Iran. However, the scope and purpose of using the portfolio should be specified and potential  users should be well aware of the issue and its importance, and to learn the skills necessary to use it.

Active learning strategies with innovative ways are now being used in the teaching and learning for the engagement of students in the classroom settings. A number of studies talks about the benefits the students have shown through their skills while using the active learning methods in their science courses that is Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology and Pathophysiology. It has been observed that active learning helps to retain material, motivate students and most of the time develops thinking skills.In the science courses of nurse education these are very much in use for developing the critical thinking qualities in their student nurses. Simply the nurse educator’s apply the process of active learning by engaging the students with the content. By applying active learning strategies in science courses of  nursing education one could clearly see how the students get engaged with the content. Continuous....

Abstract Background Despite the advantages of using active learning strategies in nursing education, researchers have rarely investigated how such pedagogic approaches can be used to assess students or how interactive examinations can be modified depending on circumstances of practice (e.g., in online education). Aims The aim was to compare three interactive examination designs, all based on active learning pedagogy, in terms of nursing students’ engagement and preparedness, their learning achievement, and instructional aspects. Methods A comparative research design was used including final-year undergraduate nursing students. All students were enrolled in a quality improvement course at a metropolitan university in Sweden. In this comparative study to evaluate three course layouts, participants (Cohort 1, n = 89; Cohort 2, n = 97; Cohort 3, n = 60) completed different examinations assessing the same course content and learning objectives, after which they evaluated the examinations on a questionnaire in numerical and free-text responses. Chi-squared tests were conducted to compare background variables between the cohorts and Kruskal–Wallis H tests to assess numerical differences in experiences between cohorts. Following the guidelines of the Good Reporting of a Mixed Methods Study (GRAMMS), a sequential mixed-methods analysis was performed on the quantitative findings, and the qualitative findings were used complementary to support the interpretation of the quantitative results. Results The 246 students who completed the questionnaire generally appreciated the interactive examination in active learning classrooms. Among significant differences in the results, Cohort 2 (e.g., conducted the examination on campus) scored highest for overall positive experience and engagement, whereas Cohort 3 (e.g., conducted the examination online) scored the lowest. Students in Cohort 3 generally commended the online examination’s chat function available for use during the examination. Conclusions Interactive examinations for nursing students succeed when they are campus-based, focus on student preparation, and provide the necessary time to be completed.

In this article, the results of a mixed-methods study integrating the use of simulations in a nursing theory course in order to assess students' perceptions of self-efficacy for nursing practice are presented. Nursing students in an intervention group were exposed to a combination of lecture and simulation, and then asked to rate their perceptions of self-efficacy, satisfaction and effectiveness of this combined teaching and learning strategy. Based on Bandura's (1977, 1986) theory of self-efficacy, this study provides data to suggest that students' self-confidence for nursing practice may be increased through the use of simulation as a method of teaching and learning. Students also reported higher levels of satisfaction, effectiveness and consistency with their learning style when exposed to the combination of lecture and simulation than the control group, who were exposed to lecture as the only method of teaching and learning.

Prelicensure nursing students often have difficulty performing medication calculations (MCs). Faculty at one baccalaureate nursing program wanted to use nursing theory to guide the development of a teaching–learning approach related to MC’s. Finding little theory related to the topic of MCs, a constructivist-based teaching–learning approach was used instead. The purpose of the study was to assess whether nursing students who received an MC review class that used a teaching–learning approach based on constructivist philosophy had better results on an MC examination than students who received their review via traditional teaching–learning methods. The study participants consisted of two cohorts of first-semester junior-level nursing students from one university-based school of nursing in the Midwestern United States. The results indicated that students in the simulation review class had higher mean scores on an MC examination than students who received their review via more traditional means. Teaching–learning strategies related to MCs based on constructivist philosophy have the potential to improve student learning outcomes, but more research is needed before middle-range theory related to this critically important area of nursing education can be developed.

Scope: Learning approaches that are considered effective and feasible to be applied in the current learning process are active learning strategies. By using an active learning strategy, students will be invited to always be involved and motivated to do their best in each learning process, so that students will become excited in participating in learning. Objective: This qualitative study presented the results of literature reviewed gathering from various theories, including national, international journals, books, internet and other literature to answer the problem formulation. Method: A serial of literature on active learning strategies that actively applied in most modern education were reviewed and presented to answer the research question. Findings: based on many experts in the fields of teaching and learning, the findings of this study were First, Active learning starts with questions, card short, the power of two, jigsaw, Index card match, picture and picture, cooperative script, problem based instruction, students team achievement devision, etc. Significance: The findings of this literature rewiewing has promoted students better thoughtful and understanding on material presented as participants engaging themselves with the lesson cores not simply just follow teacher's instruction. These findings are also so useful insight to keep student's concentration and improving learning achieving to the higher learning outcomes as demanded by instructional curriculum. Recomendation: Monotonous and teacher-focused learning is increasingly in demand and continues to be abandoned because it makes students bored and boring. With an effective approach it is hoped that learning objectives can be optimally achieved.

Nursing students historically have struggled to learn a large amount of content in a short period of time. Reliance on intense memorization of endless facts from multiple textbook chapters is ineffective, exhausting, and generally does not result in knowledge retention. Nursing educators face the challenge of facilitating learning that promotes critical thinking through the use of strategies that actively engage the students. Creating an environment of learning where students come prepared to class and use the textbook material to enhance understanding and knowledge acquisition is imperative. This article presents active learning strategies that are flexible for varying class sizes, time availability, and topics. Classroom assessment techniques support the value of this teaching-learning approach.

Introduction Clinical practice is considered an integral part of nursing education. It is in the clinical area that the students integrate the theory learnt in the classroom into practice. An enabling clinical environment with the assistance of a clinical preceptor (CP) ensures that student nurses become independent practitioners and competent in their roles and responsibilities. DesignA comprehensive study was undertaken to explore the emerging role of CPs in Pakistan. This research has been reported in the literature. This paper will deal exclusively with the perceptions of nursing students when working with CPs in the four-year undergraduate baccalaureate program at a private school of nursing (SON) in Pakistan. Through focus group discussions, the perceptions of undergraduate students were explored. ResultsFour main themes emerged. These included the creation of a conducive clinical environment, development of competencies, engagement in patient care, and personal and professional development.
