Strategic planning is a routine activity for institutions of higher education. However, these processes do not always result in strategy that reflects the complexity of these organizations or the challenges that they face. By applying design thinking to the challenge of creating robust strategy, the authors put forward a method they called “Four Dimensional Design” that can be readily applied to helping these institutions create strategy with strong buy-in from internal and external stakeholders, innovative solutions, clear expectations for scope and scale, as well as a sense of how new initiatives can be systematized to approach challenges across time.

Purpose This paper aims to demonstrate the variety of ways institutions and their libraries approach student success both conceptionally and operationally. Design/methodology/approach Librarians from nine different institutions of higher education were given a series of questions about student success on their campuses and in their libraries. They responded with written essays describing their experiences and perspectives. Findings The contributed pieces are collected together and display a shared interest in defining “student success,” aligning strategic planning with student success initiatives and establishing (and assessing) strong infrastructure to support student success. Originality/value These examples help us observe what is happening throughout higher education and see potential paths forward at our own institutions engaged in this work.

The article analyzes project as a method of innovative solution in higher education which may result in introducing gradual changes in the institutions of higher education. There is a universal opinion that universities are conservative institutions where changes are slow or they are not at all. Nowadays the emphasis of action changes and higher education institutions (hereafter in the text HEI) look for cooperation possibilities with the employers and the possible applicants; they try to get closer to the society by participating in social and economic changes that take place in the society and participate in developing the education policy and decision making. Implementation of projects in the higher education institution which involve the whole staff promotes the increase of the staff’s competence and provide innovative solutions in the study process, develop a closer link among the project partners, state, municipality and non-governmental sector.

Over the past 35 years, institutions of higher education have been involved in strategic planning in an attempt to promote their priorities and remain competitive in challenging economic times. Efforts have been made to improve the process and effectiveness of strategic planning over those years. Although strategic planning can be effective, the plan must be created properly and also implemented in an effective manner. Since online learning has become an increasingly important revenue source for many institutions of higher education, as well as an alternative way to provide instruction to students, it is typically included within institutional strategic plans and prioritized for growth. Ensuring that faculty “buy-in” to this goal and strategic priorities requires significant faculty engagement. In this paper, options for implementation and ways to promote engagement are discussed within a case study of how Auburn University kinesiology faculty took part in educational transformation and innovation by connecting to the campus mission.

Promoted as a way to enhance learning and improve efficiencies, the steady rise of technology adoption across higher education has created both new opportunities and new challenges. Borrowing principles of design thinking and related user- or learner-centered design practices, this descriptive case study offers an example of how institutions of higher education might rethink their overreliance on learning management systems and consider an online environment for program-level learning from students’ perspectives.

Palavras-chave: Estado, crise do capital, gestão da educação.CURRENT CRISIS OF CAPITAL IN FORMING OF CONTEMPORARY STATE AND MANAGEMENT EDUCATIONAbstract: Resulting clipping of studies, aimed to examine the contemporary state in its conformation before the current crisis of capital, in the perspective of management education. Within the new institutional set by capital, we have incorporated commercial perverse logic induced by various means and ways, either by the media, whether through fundingprograms that influence public institutions to assume managerial organization, strategic planning, the culture of evaluation (benchmarking), encouraging individualism, through entrepreneurship, demonstrating that the challenges are there for those who want and can fit. Education in every way plays a significant role in this context. In institutions of higher education is more visible now, but in elementary school is being built such logic gradually. Keywords: State, crisis of capital, management education

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic required shifts in operations for institutions of higher education everywhere. Faculty and administrators were asked to adapt to meet the needs of students. We conducted a qualitative content analysis to understand institutional responses and examine the experiences of faculty and administrators during the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of chaos theory. Institutional responses to the pandemic varied. Participants identified supports and resources deemed helpful, as well as those found to be inadequate or unwanted. We also found that the pandemic resulted in some positive outcomes for faculty and administrators, which led to growth in teaching and self-care. Implications for strategic planning and future directions for research are explored.
