A Systematic Study and Analysis of Security Issues in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks

A Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) is an assortment of a variety of portable nodes that are linked collectively in a greater number in a wireless medium that has no permanent infrastructure. Here, all the nodes in the network act as both router and host and is in charge for accelerating and forwarding packets to other nodes. Due to the frequent link failure and high speed of mobile nodes, there are many challenges in MANET. As security is the basic challenge in a MANET, this article discusses the various protocols developed for security issues in MANET and IoT and presents a comparative analysis on their performance. After detailed analysis and comparison, it was observed that when security features are imposed at different levels during routing, various protocols perform in different ways. Also, the network performance and network life times vary from one approach to another. So, this article also presents the effect of security features on data drop and delay of prominent protocols after simulation.

It is known for its properties of routable network, where each node acts as a router to forward packets to other specific nodes in the network. Security in the mobile ad hoc network is a very critical job and requires the consideration of different security issues on all the layers of communication. The countermeasures are the functions that reduce or eliminate security vulnerabilities and attacks. This chapter provides a comprehensive study of all prominent attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks described in the literature. To sustain the security services in a Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET), applications in terms of confidentially, authentication, integrity, authorization, key management, and abnormal behavior detection/anomaly detection are significant. The implementation of a sophisticated security mechanism requires a large number of network resources that degrade network performance. In addition, routing protocols designed for MANETs should be energy efficient in order to maximize network performance. In line with this view, this work proposes a new hybrid method called the data-driven zone-based routing protocol (DD-ZRP) for resource-constrained MANETs that incorporate anomaly detection schemes for security and energy awareness using Network Simulator 3. Most of the existing schemes use constant threshold values, which leads to false positive issues in the network. DD-ZRP uses a dynamic threshold to detect anomalies in MANETs. The simulation results show an improved detection ratio and performance for DD-ZRP over existing schemes; the method is substantially better than the prevailing protocols with respect to anomaly detection for security enhancement, energy efficiency, and optimization of available resources.


Mobile ad hoc networks, abbreviated to MANETs are covering various application fields with the significant advancements in wireless networks. In the recent past, the multimedia transmission over such networks has drawn the attention from researchers and scientists. In wireless medium, it is always advantageous to go for multicast routing than unicast routing. This paper focuses on the performance analysis of a multicast routing protocol, multicast ad hoc on-demand distance vector (MAODV), and its modified version QoS-MAODV, to support multimedia transmission over ad hoc environments.

As mobile computing gains popularity, the need for ad hoc routing also continues to grow. In mobile ad hoc networks, the mobility of nodes and error prone nature of the wireless medium pose many challenges, including frequent route changes and packet losses. Such problems increase the packet delays and decrease the throughput. To meet with the dynamic queuing behaviour of Ad hoc networks, to provide QoS and hence to improve the performance, a scheduler can be used. This chapter presents a novel fuzzy based priority scheduler for mobile ad-hoc networks, to determine the priority of the packets. The performance of this scheduler is studied using GloMoSim and evaluated in terms of quantitative metrics such as packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and throughput.

Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is the one of the type of ad hoc network, the MANET is a collection of two or more devices or nodes or terminals with wireless communications and networking capability that communicate with each other without the aid of any centralized  administrator also the wireless nodes that can dynamically form a network to exchange information without using any existing fixed network infrastructure. And it's an autonomous system in which mobile hosts connected by wireless links are free to be dynamically and sometime act as routers at the same time, In MANET, the mobile nodes require to forward packets for each other to enable communication among nodes outside of transmission  range. The nodes in the network are free to move independently in any direction, leave and join the network arbitrarily. Thus a node experiences changes in its link states regularly with other devices. Eventually, the mobility in the ad hoc network, change of link states and other properties of  wireless transmission such as attenuation, multipath propagation, interference etc. This paper discuses   study of Mobile ad-hoc Networks (MANET): classification, characteristics, structure of  MANET  and challenges that are imposed by Mobile ad-hoc Networks.

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is defined as a set of mobile nodes which communicate through wireless links with no central infrastructure. In these networks nodes are always moving and could enter to or exit from the network at any time. Therefore, network topology is completely dynamic. Another characteristic of these networks is the low node energy level, resulting from inherent node limitations. Stable routing is one method to face routing challenges in mobile ad hoc networks. The objective of this study is to stabilize TORA protocol which is a distributed routing protocol, with high adaptation, efficiency, and suitability for large and dense mobile ad hoc networks and thus to provide a new high efficiency protocol. The proposed protocol introduced as Stable-TORA has been compared with base protocol TORA in different scenarios via NS-2 simulator environment and its efficiency is evaluated.

Service discovery plays a relevant role in mobile ad hoc environments. Indeed, upon joining a self-organizing network, mobile nodes should be able to explore the environment to learn about, locate, and share the available services. As a result, many researches were performed in this area. Recently, research is being directed towards integrating the service discovery into the routing protocols. This chapter presents the basic concepts of service discovery and their related issues. It also describes the service discovery challenges that arise due to the properties of mobile ad hoc networks. The chapter is concluded by presenting some observations and discussing the current challenges to provide guidelines for possible improvements.
