TELEWORKS A REALITY AMONG LECTURERS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

Information Communication Technology-based practices have given rise to flexible work arrangements, such as flextime and telecommuting, which increase the amount of autonomy that employees have in their work. The increase in the use of ICTs and technological improvements enabled the development of telework. The study,x-rayed the effect of telework on the performance of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.Descriptive design was adopted and the sample of 39 respondents was drawn from the target population of 16203. Data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. The findings revealed that there is a positive and significant relationship between home-based telework and supervision of students by university lecturers in Nigeria. Also, a positiverelationship exists between occasional telework and lecture delivery by university lecturers in Nigeria. The study recommended that management of various tertiary institutions should provide their workers with necessary facilities that will aid home-based teleworks, to increase productivity and ensure improved work quality.

The issue about globalisation is now commonplace. However, there has not been enough literature concerning its link with ICT and mathematics education and how the three put together have impacted tertiary education pedagogy. In light of this, this chapter involves a local context of tertiary institutions operating in an environment exposed to the processes of globalisation. The chapter explores the meaning of globalisation, information communication technology, and mathematics education. It discusses how ICT and globalisation in relation to blended learning have influenced mathematics education, considers the relation between globalisation and mathematics education, and finally, draws the implications of globalisation and ICT on pedagogy in tertiary education.

The study attempted to investigate the challenges that the monastic religious encounter in the use of information communication technologies with reference to internet, mobile phones, computers/laptops and digital televisions; and their coping strategies, a case of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing (MBST) in Nairobi Priory, Kenya. The world today is witnessing tremendous changes and development in the information and communication technologies. However, there is scanty literature that addresses the challenges and the strategies that can be used by religious consecrated men and women, to cope up with the modern communication technologies effectively. The study employed sequential explanatory mixed methods. The target population included the perpetually professed sisters, junior sisters in the leadership team (superiors, formators and administrators) of the monastic religious congregation of the MBST Nairobi Priory, Kenya. Questionnaires, interviews and focus group discussion (FGD) were the instruments used to collect data. The findings of the study in which both the challenges and the strategies were presented in a 4-point Likert scale and respondents were asked to indicate their choices from; 4=Strongly agree, 3=Agree, 2=Disagree, 1=Strongly disagree revealed that: With the challenges the use of ICTs pose to the monastic lifestyle (community life and the evangelical counsels); majority of them in all the 14 challenges presented, agreed and strongly agreed to them. Likewise the interviews and FGD had similar experiences with the same challenges. The strategies for coping up with the challenges too showed similar responses to a greater extent in agreement. From the study it is clear that, as monastic religious, the MBST cannot not afford to be alien to the modern means of communication as they are the chief means of information and education, of guidance and inspiration. Since they are unavoidably embedded in daily life, the religious consecrated should use them conscientiously and responsibly to become a factor of humanization, which calls for a proper formation of conscience. Although the construction sector plays an important role in European economics, the use of information communication technology (ICT) systems in this industry is very low while the potential of e‐Business to increase productivity and efficiency is not exploited. This paper aims to identify internal processes which are most important to small and medium enterprises (SME) in construction industry and to estimate opportunities to adapt ICT in order to optimise those processes. The methodology used ‐ analysis of current processes in construction companies in pursuance to find out which are most important for SMEs and define future scenarios of one selected process via story telling. Twelve internal current processes of construction SMEs identified and out of those four most important ones selected are: e-Tendering, e-Site, e-Procurement and e-Quality, where “e” stands both for electronic and envisioning. e‐Procurement process perspectives are defined and functionalities required for this scenario listed.

The uptake of information communication technology (ICT) by secondary schools is beset by a complex of challenges that are not clearly understood and documented. In order to facilitate effective and efficient implementation of digitalization in schools in Kenya, there is need to map out the diversity of challenges that bedevil its adoption. The purpose of this study was to analyze the challenges facing integration of information communication technology (ICT) in the operations of public day and boarding secondary schools from the south rift region of Kenya. The objectives of the study were to; assess the challenges facing ICT integration and compare the levels of ICT integration in boys, girls and co-educational secondary schools from the south rift region of Kenya. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The target population for the study comprised of all the 141 teachers from the public secondary schools in the south rift region of Kenya enrolled in the Strengthening of Mathematics and Science in Secondary Education (SMASSE) program. The study employed census sampling technique since the target population was small, easily accessible and manageable. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using the descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. The study tested the hypothesis that there was no statistically significant difference in challenges facing integration of ICT in boys, girls and co-educational secondary schools from the south rift region of Kenya. To test this hypothesis the One way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistics was computed which yielded p-value = .000 which was less than the alpha value α > 0.05 indicating that the differences in challenges facing ICT integration in boys, girls and co-educational schools were statistically significant. Therefore the null hypothesis was rejected. This led to the conclusion that challenges facing ICT integration from the three categories of schools were significantly different. From the findings of the study, it is recommended that there is need strengthen in service training of teachers in ICT and perform widespread upgrade of ICT software since these were the most serious challenges that faced integration of ICT in schools.
