ISO 14000 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT IN BUSINESS

Today, environmental pollution is a global problem. Industrialization, rapid urbanization, technological advances, economic developments and increasing world population have brought environmental pollution with them. Environmental pollution has reached a level that threatens human health and safety. Environmental management systems are useful and important in many ways such as reducing the negative effects of businesses on the environment, creating a safe working environment, preventing pollution, reducing costs, reducing risks, improving environmental performance, and improving corporate image. The aim of this study is to emphasize the importance of ISO 14000 environmental management system standards for sustainable development and environment in business. In this direction, the study explains sustainable development, sustainable environment, the characteristics, importance, development, stages, standards and benefits of the ISO 14000 environmental management system for businesses.

The increase in environmental pollution, the decrease in resources, and legal obligations that came with globalization, industrialization, and economic developments increased the responsibilities of individuals, societies, and managers at all levels regarding environmental issues. For the future of societies and the world and to ensure the existence and sustainability of a healthy and safe environment to minimize environmental problems, organizations should take environmentally sensitive approaches. Environmental management systems are useful and important in many ways such as reducing the adverse impacts of the organizations on the environment, creating safe work environments, preventing pollution, lowering costs, reducing risks, improving environmental performance, improving corporate image, improving the success and reputation of organizations. The aim of this chapter is to emphasize the importance of ISO 14000 environmental management system standards in organizations and to evaluate its characteristics, implementation stages, and development.

This publication was presented characteristics of the environmental life cycle assessment LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) as one of the methods included in the environmental management system (EMAS). Discusses also the various stages of analysis and guidance on the principles of its preparation regulated by the ISO 14000 standards (International Organization for Standardization), as well as paid attention to the key elements which determine the outcome of the assessments.

The aim of this work is to identify the contributions of the Cleaner Production Program to the Environmental Management System certified to ISO 14000. The results of the research indicate that the procedure standardization demanded by normalization leads the company to adopt environmentally adequate procedures; besides, the implementation of the Cleaner Production Program acts as a complementary tool in the EMS, with a view to improving environmental performance.

Started in 2007, the PN2 MEMDUR project’s main objective is to design, develop, test and implement in Dambovita County an advanced management system which has to assure the evaluation of the environmental risk in order to administrate the crises situations, in accordance with the demands required by the sustainable development on local, regional and national level. This paper tries to emphasize one of the most important parts of the project which manages the recorded data collected from the measuring workstations. Those workstations measure several parameters in fixed or mobile points.
