Improving Personalization In E-Learning Systems

Individual learners have different requirements and characteristics, and as a result learning content should be able to be personalized and adaptable to the e-learner' profile. Little research work undertaken to tackle this issue, and it has been limited to ad-hoc work on personalizing, and adapting learning content in e-Learning. This paper presents two methods for modeling user profile and for personalizing and adapting a given content to match that profile: inductive (without user intervention) and deductive (with user intervention). These methods will be used as a base to review and classify research work undertaken on personalizing content in the domain of knowledge management and e-learning systems. Based on these reviews, especially those undertaken in personalizing knowledge content in knowledge management systems, the paper proposes a comprehensive approach for personalizing learning content.

E-learning systems are of no help to the users if there are no powerful search engines and browsing tools to assist them. Most of the current web-based learning systems are closed systems where the courses and the learning material are fixed. The only thing that is dynamic is that the organization of the learning content is adapted to allow individualized learning environment. The learners of web-based e-learning systems belong to different categories based on their skills, background, preferences and learning styles. This paper focuses on personalized semantic search and recommending learning content that are appropriate to the learning environment. The semantic and personalized search of the learning content is based on comparison of the learner profile. The learner profile depends on re individual learning style of the user and learning objects’ metadata. This concept needs to be represented both in the learner profile as well as learning object description as certain data structures. Personalized recommendation of learning objects uses an approach to determine a more suitable relationship between learning objects and learning profiles. Thus, it may advise a learner with most suitable learning objects. Semantic learning objects search is based on the query expansion of the user query and by using the semantic similarity to retrieve semantic matched learning objects.

In most existing E-learning systems, activities' content and order are presented in a static manner without taking into consideration the learners characteristics, profiles or competencies. The challenge is to adapt and regulate learning processes according to the learner profile by applying learning models that use new information technologies. There are several adaptation approaches of E-learning environments, such as, adaptive hypermedia system, semantic web, etc. In our proposed system, we adopted a Competency Based Approach to offer each learner an individualized learning path for the acquisition of the competence targeted on the basis of the collaborative filtering. Concerning the technological aspect, the system is implemented as a web services while adhering to a service-oriented architecture. This allows interoperability with heterogeneous learning systems

Conformance to social context while designing an e-learning course is crucial in enhancing acceptability of the course. Building socially aware e-learning courses requires elicitation of social opinion from various stakeholders associated with the system. Stakeholders are disparate in their perception towards the intricacies of the system, leading to generation of numerous assorted ideas. Knowledge Management (KM) assimilates these ideas to bring congruency into the system. This paper proposes i) a model KMeLS (Knowledge Management in e-Learning Systems) built upon the SECI (Socialization, Externalization, Combination and Internalization) framework, and ii) an algorithm PARSeL (Prioritizing Alternatives using Recommendations of Stakeholders in e-Learning) to incorporate KM into designing an e-learning course. PARSeL prioritizes the content using stakeholder recommendations using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and fuzzy modeling. A case study is also presented with a goal of prioritizing a set of programming languages for an online computing course. The proposed methodology can be promising in recommending appropriate content for the e-learners and can be implemented to benefit e-learning organizations in a wider spectrum.

This work investigates the integration of e-Learning systems and knowledge management technology to improve, capture, organize and deliver large amounts of knowledge. First, a model is proposed for the phases of knowledge management. The model is then enhanced with concepts and technology from e-Learning. The model is then used to illustrate real world scenarios that add increasing amounts of knowledge management to an e-Learning environment. The system, AMID promises high interactivity, efficiency and effectiveness of integration of knowledge management and e-learning. In addition, the developed system will enhance technical learning process.

The article discusses the methods of knowledge management for E/U-Learning systems, which will provide the opportunities for the construction of a unified all-pervasive electronic educational environment. Authors analyze the development of a new phase of e-learning (E-Learning 3.0) in which will play an important role distributed computer systems, cloud computing, mobile personal devices and wireless networks, artificial intelligence and virtual reality tools. Today, there is a fundamental scientific problem of creating a unified interstate intellectual environment for e-education services. This environment should include heterogeneous forms of knowledge representation, interstate standards and forms of learning, international faculty and student teams. The article suggests a possible knowledge management methods and the approach to the construction of an all-pervading intellectual environment for e-learning services. The proposed approach is based on the integration of multiple technologies, such as: service-oriented design, engineering of DSPL (Dynamic Software Product Lines), wireless telecommunications, interaction of intelligent e-learning agents. Structural basis of this approach is interconnected pair of intelligent software agents: student’s and teacher’s software agents. These agents are able to adapt itself: to the current level of student’s knowledge; to the available software, hardware and network equipment; to the current demands of the environment (e.g. labor markets); to the modern educational standards. As a basis of software agents self-adaptation is a mathematical variability model, including the three basic features hierarchy: educational content, interface, software and technical support. Application of such variability model does not require recompilation of the source code (to make changes in the agents properties) and allows to organize a continuous process of e-learning and significantly increase the life cycle of the entire system of distance learning. Moreover, the authors propose a service-oriented scheme for knowledge flows management. The article will be useful for experts in e-learning, developers of service-oriented systems and for managers in the field of socio-economic systems.

This paper presents a two-year research work with the main goal of analyzing the resources production for online scenarios, as well as enhancing in-service primary and secondary school teachers' competence in this area. After detecting training shortfalls from 1,192 in-service Andalusian teachers using an ad-hoc Likert scale, an online training activity on e-course production was developed, and, upon completion, the participating teachers were surveyed regarding design alternatives (N=86). Results gathered were complemented by conducting a focus group with the course tutors. Initial data allowed to prioritize certain training pathways in the online education extent, such as OER authoring, e-learning standards, repositories, and e-course development. As per the instructional design study, it was emphasized the need for institutional support in course creation initiatives and appropriate designs by combining internal VLE tools and externally produced OER. Finally, feedback, peer evaluation, rubrics, and digital badges were denoted as key elements in e-course designs.
