High-rise buildings are very sensitive to wind excitations, and wind-induced responses have always been the key factors for structural design. Facade openings have often been used as aerodynamic measures for wind-resistant design of high-rise buildings to meet the requirement of structural safety and comfort. Obvious wind speed amplifications can also be observed inside the openings. Therefore, implementing wind turbines in the openings is of great importance for the utilization of abundant wind energy resources in high-rise buildings and the development of green buildings. Based on numerical simulation and wind tunnel testing, the wind loads and wind speed amplifications on high-rise buildings with openings are investigated in detail. The three-dimensional numerical simulation for wind effects on high-rise building with openings was firstly carried out on FLUENT 15.0 platform by SST k − ε model. The mean wind pressure coefficients and the wind flow characteristics were obtained. The wind speed amplifications at the opening were analyzed, and the distribution law of wind speed in the openings is presented. Meanwhile, a series of wind tunnel tests were conducted to assess the mean and fluctuating wind pressure coefficients in high-rise building models with various opening rates. The variation of wind pressure distribution at typical measuring layers with wind direction was analyzed. Finally, the wind speed amplifications in the openings were studied and verified by the numerical simulation results.

Ground subsidence is aggravated and becomes a prominent phenomenon recently in Tanggu, China. The subsidence reached its most critic state because of intensive water over-extraction in 1980s. Thereafter, over-draft withdraw of groundwater has been strictly controlled. Consequently, the rate of settlement decreased in the subsequent period. However, in recent year, ground subsidence becomes a prominent hazard again in some high-rise building areas .GPS-based monitoring data indicated new cone of depression has been formed. After detail investigation and analysis, it was thought that the appearance of the new subsidence center is the direct consequence of the construction of high-rise building. In this study, based on acquired monitoring data of subsidence, a special software package of Adina computer programs was applied in this study and analysis of the mechanism of subsidence induced by buildings. The results indicate that this method is useful to manage the land subsidence problem to high-rise building group.

This article presents the algorithm of monitoring a high-rise building as a complex object. The functional areas (strata) of a high-rise building are considered and certain mathematical models and algorithms describing the process of monitoring a high-rise building are presented. The developed system using this algorithm should allow real-time monitoring of the life support systems, making better decisions in the event of unusual situations.

Abstract The highwall miner can be used to mine the retained coal in the end slope of an open-pit mine. However, the instability mechanism of the reserved rib pillar under dynamic and static loads is not clear, which restricts the safe and efficient application of the highwall mining system. In this study, the load-bearing model of the rib pillar in highwall mining was established, the cusp catastrophe theory and the safety coefficient of the rib pillar were considered, and the criterion equations of the rib pillar stability were proposed. Based on the limit equilibrium theory, the limit stress of the rib pillar was analyzed, and the calculation equations of plastic zone width of the rib pillar in highwall mining were obtained. Based on the Winkler foundation beam theory, the elastic foundation beam model composed of the rib pillar and roof under the highwall mining was established, and the calculation equations for the compression of the rib pillar under dynamic and static loads were developed. The results show that with the increase of the rib pillar width, the total compression of the rib pillar under dynamic and static loads approximately decreases in an inverse function, and the compression of the rib pillar caused by static loads of the overlying strata and trucks has a decisive role. Numerical simulation and theoretical calculation were performed in this study. In the Numerical simulation, the coal seam with a buried depth of 122 m and a thickness of 3 m was mined by the highwall miner. According to the established rib pillar instability model of the highwall mining system, it is found that when the mining tunnel width is 3 m, the reasonable width of the rib pillar is at least 1.3 m, and the safety factor of the rib pillar is 1.3. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation, which verifies the feasibility of the theoretical analysis of the rib pillar stability. The research results can provide an important reference for the stability analysis of rib pillars under highwall mining.
