Comparison of the vulnerabilities between former and current RC frame structures after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake are performed in the paper. Two representative types of RC frame building in Wenchuan county town are studied by nonlinear finite element method (FEM). Probabilistic seismic demand models (PSDM) for RC frame structures is built to assess the safety levels of two representative RC frames in Wenchuan county town. The fragility curves for immediate occupancy (IO), significant damage (SD), and collapse prevention (CP) damage levels of the RC frame building are analyzed. The result indicates the safety levels of current RC frame building in Wenchuan district are well improved compared to the former RC frame building after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.

A local and formal RC frame building in Wenchuan dicstrict, named Shuang-he market building which is damaged in 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, is studied by nonlinear finite element method. By using probabilistic seismic demand model (PSDM), the seismic fragility assessment of the RC frame is demonstrated on RC frames. Probabilistic seismic demand model (PSDM) for RC frame structures was built to assess the safety levels of the actual RC frames representative of design and construction practices in the Wenchuan county town. The fragility curves for immediate occupancy, significant damage, and collapse prevention damage levels of the RC frame building are analyzed. The result reveals the safety levels of RC frame building in Wenchuan district before the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.

Under the excitation of large earthquake, structures enter into high nonlinear stage. Currently, Opensees, Perform-3d and Canny are used as the most popular nonlinear analysis procedures. The fiber model will be introduced firstly and the nonlinear analysis models in Canny are explained in detail. Then Canny2007 is used to conduct nonlinear time history analysis on a heavily damaged frame structure with interlayer in Dujiangyan during Wenchuan Earthquake. Analysis shows that the maximum inter-story drift appears between the interlayer and its upper layer, and the heavy damage agrees well with the results of damage investigation. By comparing the damage extent of frame structures with or without interlayer, it reveals that the seismic performance of RC frame structures without interlayer is obviously better than that of ones with interlayer.

In Wenchuan Earthquake, masonry-infilled frames have the quite critical failures. In this paper, the reason of the failure phenomenon is analyzed and the influence of the infilled wall to performance of the frame is highlighted. An improved three-strut model for masonry-infilled frame structures is presented. Then, two RC frame specimens, which are modeled by the presented three-strut model and force-based beam-column element combined with fiber section considering compression-bending coupling in Opensees, are analyzed. The analytical results agree well with the experimental results. It is shown that the presented three-strut model is sufficient to simulate the performance of the infilled wall.

This paper explores the development of a method that is useful for design of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures to resist earthquakes. The substitute structure method, originally proposed in the 1970s, makes an analogy between viscously damped linear and hysteretic response for the purpose of estimating maximum displacement. The evolution of the method is retraced in order to emphasize its unique reliance on experimental results, which are needed to establish rules for assignment of substitute linear properties. Recent dynamic test results are used to extend significantly the calibration of the method, which furnishes design loads on the basis of drift and damage control.
