In order to meet the requirements of Smart Grid in data acquisition, transmission reliability, stability, robustness and low power consumption of devices, ZigBee with its significant advantages of low power, low cost, low rate and easy to use, can play an important role in Smart Grid. As one of the key technologies of ZigBee, routing technology plays an important role in the performance optimization of network. Thus, in this paper, we focus on cluster-tree routing algorithm and hybrid routing algorithm in ZigBee network. Simulation and results show that, hybrid routing algorithm has better performance than cluster-tree routing algorithm in network throughput, average traffic received, average number of hops, network delay and network load.

Aiming at energy consumption problem in the ZBR hybrid routing algorithm, an improved algorithm (W-ZBR) based on ZBR routing protocol is proposed to reduce the network energy consumption. The algorithm was improved mainly from the following parts: Cluster-tree routing algorithm and AODVjr routing algorithm. In Cluster-tree routing algorithm the redundant packet of RREQ is limited to reduce energy consumption by setting the parent node id. In AODVjr routing algorithm the network energy consumption is balanced by monitoring the remaining energy of nodes. The simulation result indicated that W-ZBR performs better than ZBR in remaining energy ratio, routing overhead ratio, available node ratio and packet delivery ratio. The algorithm can also prolong the life span of network.

Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) are one of the most challenging applications of WSN. They require large amounts of data to be transmitted with high reporting rates which consume an order of magnitude of resources, such as storage, computation, bandwidth, and energy. On the other hand, the ZigBee standard was originally specified for low data rate, low power consumption, and low cost wireless personal area networks (WPANs), making it suitable to WSN. However, handling high data rate applications, such as video surveillance in WPANs, is a challenge. Simultaneous multipath routing is one solution to increase the available bandwidth in a ZigBee network. In this paper, we proposed Z-MHTR (ZigBee Multipath Hierarchical Tree Routing), a node disjoint multipath routing extension of the ZigBee tree routing protocol in cluster-tree WSNs. Extensive simulations were performed and showed that the propsed multipath routing enhances application performance in terms of packet delivery ratio, end to end delay, and network lifetime even under heavy data rates.
