Construction of XBRL Semantic Metamodel and Knowledge Base Based on Ontology

In order to improve the interoperability of XBRL format financial reporting on the semantic level, a novel XBRL financial reporting metamodel and a fact data semantic metamodel are proposed, which uses the Semantic Web technologies and Ontology theory. Then, a XBRL knowledge base is constructed based on this metamodel .Using the metamodel-based translation mechanism from XBRL to OWL / RDF, all the semantic information in XBRL taxonomy and instance documents is translated into OWL ontology and RDF instance. Finally, a knowledge base covering the semantic information of financial reporting domain is constructed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the Records in Contexts proposal of a conceptual model (RiC-CM) from the International Council on Archives’ (ICA) archival description and to propose an OWL ontology for its implementation in the semantic web. Design/methodology/approach The various elements of the model are studied and are related to earlier norms in order to understand their structure and the modeling of the ontology. Findings The analysis reveals the integrating nature of RiC-CM and the possibilities it offers for greater interoperability of data from archival descriptions. Two versions of an OWL ontology were developed to represent the conceptual model. The first makes a direct transposition of the conceptual model; the second optimizes the properties and relations in order to simplify the use and maintenance of the ontology. Research limitations/implications The proposed ontology will follow the considerations of the final version of the ICA’s RiC-CM. Practical implications The analysis affords an understanding of the role of RiC-CM in publishing online archival data sets, while the ontology is an initial approach to the semantic web technologies involved. Originality/value This paper offers an overview of Records in Contexts with respect to the advantages in the field of semantic interoperability, and supposes the first proposal of an ontology based on the conceptual model.

This chapter describes Hermes, a framework for building personalized news services using Semantic Web technologies. The Hermes framework consists of four phases: classification, which categorizes news items with respect to a domain ontology, knowledge base updating, which keeps the knowledge base up-to-date based on the news information, news querying, which allows the user to search the news with concepts of interest, and results presentation, which shows the news results of the search process. Hermes is supported by a framework implementation, the Hermes News Portal, a tool that enables users to have a personalized access to news items. The Hermes framework and its associated implementation aim at advancing the state-of-the-art of semantic approaches for personalized news services by employing Semantic Web standards, exploiting and keeping up-to-date domain information, using advanced natural language processing techniques (e.g., ontology-based gazetteering, word sense disambiguation, etc.), and supporting time-based queries for expressing the desired news items.

In this article, we describe issues related to the development of intelligent and human-centered LBS for indoor environments. We focus on the navigation service. Navigation is probably the most challenging LBS since it involves relatively complex algorithms and many cognitive processes (e.g., combining known paths for reaching unknown destinations, minimizing path length). With the proposed system, we try to incorporate intelligence to navigation services by enriching them with the semantics of users and navigation spaces. Such semantic information is represented and reasoned using state-of-the-art semantic Web technologies (Berners-Lee, Hendler, & Lassila, 2001).
