In this study, Sparking parameters specifically Current (I), pulse on time (ton), pulse off time (toff), spark gap and dielectric flushing pressure (P) are optimized with the consideration of multi responses such as Material Removal Rate (MRR) and Electrode wear Rate (EWR). The characteristic features of the Spark EDM process are explored through Taguchi L18 orthogonal array design of experimental studies with various process parametric combinations. To optimize the above machining parameter, grey relation techniques are used. Based on the grey relation grade, optimum levels of parameters have been identified and major contribution of parameters is determined by ANOVA. Verification test is conducted to validate the test result.

Ti-6Al-4V is a titanium alloy having high strength, low weight and corrosion resistant which is a required characteristic for a material to be used in aerospace industry. Titanium, being a hard alloy is difficult to the machine via conventional methods so it is a call to use non-conventional processes. In present work, the effects on Ti-6Al-4V by drilling a hole of Ø 6 mm using copper (99%) electrode in electric discharge machining (EDM) process is analyzed. Experiments were performed under different operating conditions of peak current, pulse-on time and pulse-off time. Multi-objective optimization technique Grey relational analysis is used for process optimization of material removal rate (MRR) and electrode wear rate (EWR). Experiments are designed using an L9 orthogonal array. ANOVA is used for finding most contributing parameter followed by confirmation tests for validating the results.

In this paper optimization of the electrical discharge machining (EDM) process with multiple performance characteristics based on the orthogonal array with the grey relational analysis was studied and investigated. A grey relational grade obtained from the grey relational analysis is used to solve the EDM process. Optimal machining parameters are determined by considering the grey relational grade as the performance index. The input independent parameters of peak current, pulse on time and pulse off time were examined and optimized on multiple response characters (material removal rate, electrode wear ratio and surface roughness). Experimental results have shown that machining performance in the EDM process can be improved effectively through this approach.

The present work deals with multi-objective optimization of powder mixed electric discharge machining (PMEDM) when processing cylindrically shaped parts. In this work, the pulse on time Ton, the pulse off time Toff, the powder concentration Cp, the pulse current IP, and the server voltage SV were chosen for the optimization problem. Also, the surface roughness (SR), the material removal rate (MRR), and the electrode wear (EW) were chosen as three objectives for the investigation. Besides, the Taguchi method and the grey relational analysis (GRA) were applied for optimizing simultaneously three the SR, the MRR and the EW to find the optimum input factors. The impact of the process parameters on the overall goal was weighed. Additionally, optimum input factors of PMEDM process for multi-objectives were recommended.

This paper presents the experimental investigation on the electro-discharge machining of aluminum alloy 6061 reinforced with SiC particles using sintered Cu–W electrode. Experiments have been designed as per central composite rotatable design, using response surface methodology. Machining characteristics such as material removal rate (MRR), electrode wear ratio (EWR), and surface roughness (SR) have been investigated under the influence of four electrical process parameters; namely peak current, pulse on time, pulse off time, and gap voltage. The process parameters have been optimized to obtain optimal combination of MRR, EWR, and SR. Further, the influence of sintered Cu–W electrode on surface characteristics has been analyzed with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and Vicker microhardness tests. The results revealed that all the process parameters significantly affect MRR, EWR, and SR. The machined surface properties are modified as a result of material transfer from the electrode. The recast layer thickness is increased at higher setting of electrical parameters. The hardness across the machined surface is also increased by the use of sintered Cu–W electrode.

Intermetallic/ceramic composites with multiple responses are based on L18 orthogonal array with gray relational analysis (GRA). This paper presents a new approach for the optimization of drilling parameters on drilling MoSi 2– SiC composites. Optimal machining parameters can then be determined by the gray relational grade as the performance index. In this study, the sparking parameters namely current (I), pulse on time (t on ), pulse off time (t off ), spark gap and dielectric flushing pressure (P) are optimized with considerations of multiple performance characteristics including multi responses such as material removal rate (MRR), electrode wear rate (EWR), circularity (CIR), cylindricity (CYL), perpendicularity (PER). A gray relational grade obtained from the GRA is used to solve the electrical discharge machining (EDM) process with the multiple performance characteristics. Based on the gray relational grade, optimum levels of parameters have been identified and significant contribution of parameters is determined by ANOVA. Confirmation test is conducted to validate the test result. Experimental results have shown that the responses in EDM drilling process can be improved effectively through the new approach.

The aim of this investigation is to optimize the multiple performance characteristics of electrical discharge machining (EDM) for SKD 61 tool steel in gas media using grey relational analysis. The three most important machining characteristics namely material removal rate (MRR), electrode wear rate (EWR), and surface roughness (SR) were considered as the measures of the performance characteristics. A series of experiments were conducted according to an L18 orthogonal array based on the Taguchi experimental design method. The observed data obtained from the experiments were evaluated to determine the optimization of machining parameters correlated with multiple performance characteristics through grey relational analysis. Moreover, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to explore the significant machining parameters crucially affecting the multiple performance characteristics. In addition, the optimal combination levels of machining parameters were also determined from the response graph of grey relational grades for each level of machining parameter.

The effect of machining parameters on machining characteristics for aluminium alloy LM6 (Al-Sil2) in Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) die-sinking is studied. The objective of this project is to determine the relationship between the machining parameters including pulse-on time, pulse-off time, peak current and voltage with the machining characterictics such as Material Removal Rate (MRR), Electrode Wear Rate (EWR) and Surface Roughness (Ra). Copper materials having diameter 15mm was chosen as the electrode tool. Design of experimenent using Taguchi technique was employed to design experimental matrix that was used to optimize the MRR, EWR and Ra. The analysis was done by using the Minitab software version 16. It is found that current and pulse off time significantly affect MRR, EWR and Ra while pulse on time and voltage are less significant in their effect on machining responses. Results show that using Taguchi as a design matrix, the best setting of optimum value for machining parameters to find the required machining responses can be obtained.

In this paper, statistical and regression analysis of material removal rate using design of experiments is proposed for WEDM operations. Experimentation was planned as per Taguchi’s mixed orthogonal array. Each experiment has been performed under different cutting conditions of gap voltage, pulse ON time, pulse OFF time, wire feed and dielectric flushing pressure. Stainless Steel grade 304L was selected as a work material to conduct the experiments. From experimental results, the material removal rate was determined for each machining performance criteria. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used to find out the variables affecting the material removal rate. Assumptions of ANOVA were discussed and carefully examined using analysis of residuals. Variation of the material removal rate with machining parameters was mathematically modeled by using the regression analysis method. The developed model was validated with a set of experimental data and appeared to be satisfactory. Signal to noise ratio was applied to measure the performance characteristics deviating from the actual value. Finally, experimental confirmation was carried out to identify the effectiveness of this proposed method.

This study presents the results of experimental studies carried out to conduct a comprehensive investigation on the influence of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) input parameters on characteristics of EDM process. The machining parameters include peak current, servo voltage, pulse ON time and pulse OFF time. The study was conducted using 2 levels of Full Factorial Method in Design of Experiments. The design expert software employed to perform all the data analysis for Full Factorial and Central Composite Design (CCD) experiments. This study evaluates the machining performance of the Stainless Steel 316L using Sodick EDM linear motor series AM3L which employed Copper impregnated graphite diameter 7.0 mm as the tool electrode. The response variables are material removal rate (MRR), electrode wear rate (EWR), surface roughness (SR) and dimensional accuracy. The result shows that the peak current was the most significant factors to all variable responses. The servo voltage does not have significant effects to the machining responses in RSM. Higher current produced higher MRR, EWR, SR and Dimensional Accuracy. Maximum MRR was obtained at peak current range from 27amp to 38amp, pulse on time range from 120μs to 145μs and 60μs of pulse off time. Maximum EWR was obtained at peak current range from 27amp to 37amp, pulse on time range from 140μs to 160μs and 60μs of pulse off time. High probably, the minimum EWR only can be obtained if peak current parameter sets greater than 45amp. Lower dimensional accuracy and SR obtain at 5amp of pulse on time. Higher pulse off time produced lower MRR and EWR.Keywords: EDM Die sinking, Stainless Steel 316L, Copper Impregnated Graphite Electrode, Response Surface Methodology, Surface Roughness, Material Removal Rate, Electrode Wear Rate, Dimensional Accuracy
