This article deals with the influence of optimal actuator and sensor placement on the active control of thin-walled mechanical systems. The approach used for optimal actuator and sensor placement is based on the evaluation norms and. The optimal actuator and sensor placement satisfied the requirements on the controllability, observability and spillover prevention. The investigation of the optimal placement of actuators and sensors is demonstrated on the active vibration of the thin-walled two dimensional mechanical systems.

A modified independent modal space control (MIMSC) method is developed for designing active vibration control systems for large flexible structures. The method accounts for the interaction between the controlled and residual modes. It also incorporates optimal placement procedures for selecting the optimal locations of the actuators in the structure in order to minimize the structural vibrations as well as the actuation effort. The MIMSC method relies on an important feature which is based on ‘time sharing’ of a small number of actuators, in the modal space, to control effectively a large number of modes. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the method to generic flexible systems. The obtained results suggest the potential of the devised method in designing efficient active control systems for large flexible structures.

In this paper the investigation of a structural health monitoring method for thin-walled parts of structures is presented. The concept is based on the guided elastic wave propagation phenomena. This type of waves can be used in order to obtain information about structure condition and possibly damaged areas. Guided elastic waves can travel in the medium with relatively low attenuation, therefore they enable monitoring of extensive parts of structures. In this way it is possible to detect small defects in their early stage of growth. It is essential because undetected damage can endanger integrity of a structure. In reported investigation piezoelectric transducer was used to excite guided waves in chosen specimens. Dispersion of guided waves results in changes of velocity with the wave frequency, therefore a narrowband signal was used. Measurement of the wave field was realized using laser scanning vibrometer that registered the velocity responses at points belonging to a defined mesh. An artificial discontinuity was introduced to the specimen. The goals of the investigation was to detect it and find optimal sensor placement for this task. Determination of the optimal placement of sensors is a very challenging mission. In conducted investigation laser vibrometer was used to facilitate the task. The chosen mesh of measuring points was the basis for the investigation. The purpose was to consider various configuration of piezoelectric sensors. Instead of using vast amount of piezoelectric sensors the earlier mentioned laser vibrometer was used to gather the necessary data from wave propagation. The signals gather by this non-contact method for the considered network were input to the damage detection algorithm. Damage detection algorithm was based on a procedure that seeks in the signals the damage-reflected waves. Knowing the wave velocity in considered material the damage position can be estimated.

Novel semi-active vibration controllers are developed in this study for magnetorheological (MR) fluid-based vibration control systems, including: (1) a band-pass frequency shaped semi-active control algorithm, (2) a narrow-band frequency shaped semi-active control algorithm. These semi-active vibration control algorithms designed without resorting to the implementation of an active vibration control algorithms upon which is superposed the energy dissipation constraint. These new Frequency Shaped Semi-active Control (FSSC) algorithms require neither an accurate damper (or actuator) model, nor system identification of damper model parameters for determining control current input. In the design procedure for the FSSC algorithms, the semi-active MR damper is not treated as an active force producing actuator, but rather is treated in the design process as a semi-active dissipative device. The control signal from the FSSC algorithms is a control current, and not a control force as is typically done for active controllers. In this study, two FSSC algorithms are formulated and performance of each is assessed via simulation. Performance of the FSSC vibration controllers is evaluated using a single-degree-of-freedom (DOF) MR fluid-based engine mount system. To better understand the control characteristics and advantages of the two FSSC algorithms, the vibration mitigation performance of a semi-active skyhook control algorithm, which is the classical semi-active controller used in base excitation problems, is compared to the two FSSC algorithms.

The optimal placement of sensors and actuators in active vibration control of flexible linkage mechanisms is studied. First, the vibration control model of the flexible mechanism is introduced. Second, based on the concept of the controllability and the observability of the controlled subsystem and the residual subsystem, the optimal model is developed aiming at the maximization of the controllability and the observability of the controlled modes and minimization of those of the residual modes. Finally, a numerical example is presented, which shows that the proposed method is feasible. Simulation analysis shows that to achieve the same control effect, the control system is easier to realize if the sensors and actuators are located in the optimal positions.
