The use of recycled natural latex rubber glove (NRL-G) as a reinforced material filled acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) was studied. The compounds of different NRL-G loading (0, 10, 20 and 30 phr) were prepared by using two roll mills at room temperature. Two different size ranges of NRL-G such as 300μm-700μm (fine) and 2cm-4cm (coarser) were used. The properties such as cure characteristics, tensile and physical properties were determined. The NBR/NRL-G compound with the fine size of NRL-G exhibits overall good cure characteristics and physical properties compared with coarser size. The addition of the of 20 phr content NRL-G (fine) contributed to the optimum tensile properties than coarser size.

The using of Trans-Polyoctylene Rubber (TOR) as a compatibilizer with acrylonitrile butadiene rubber/recycled natural latex gloves (NBR/NRL-G) has been investigated. The compounds were prepared with different (TOR) loading (0, 2, 4,6 and 8 Phr) using two roll mills at room temperature. The properties such as cure characteristics, tensile properties, physical properties and morphology were studied. The compatibilized (NBR/NRL-G) compounds exhibited overall good cure characteristics, morphological and physical properties compared uncompatibilized (NBR/NRL-G) compound. The addition of the (TOR) up to 6 Phr was the optimum tensile strength.

Recycling rubber waste contributes to a cleaner environment by using indestructible rubber discards as well as lowering production costs as reclaimed rubber is cheaper than virgin or natural rubber. Therefore, in this study, the properties of recycled acrylonitrile butadiene rubber glove (NBRgr) blending with styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) has been determined. The effects of SBR/NBRr blends on properties of such fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and morphology properties were carried out. FT-IR analysis showed that SBR/NBRr R05 blended with the smallest size NBRr (S1) and showed most intense amine absorption at 1535 cm-1.The intensity decreased by increasing the NBRr sizes. By incorporating the smallest size NBRr provided more surface area to interact with SBR polymers thus increased the level of crosslink. From scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation on fatigue failure surface, the SBR/NBRr blended with the finest size of NBRr (S1) showed roughest matrix tearing compared to S2 and S3 indicated better fatigue propagation. At higher blend ratio (50/50), the SBR/NBRr blended with S2 and S3 exhibited a coarser and a poorer distribution of NBRr with SBR matrix which led to lower fatigue life.

Cure characteristics and crosslink density of virgin acrylonitrile butadiene rubber/recycled acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (vNBR/rNBR) blends were studied. Three different size ranges of rNBR particles, i.e., 150 - 350 μm, 2.0-15.0 mm, and 5-10 cm were used in this study. The vNBR/rNBR blends with blend ratios of 95/5, 85/15, 75/25, 65/35, and 50/50 were prepared using a two roll-mill at room temperature. The characterization results of the blends show that scorch time, t2, of the vNBR/rNBR blends decreased with increased rNBR content as well as decreasing sizes of rNBR particles while cure time, t90of the vNBR/rNBR blends increase with increased rNBR content as well as increasing sizes of rNBR particles. Among all blend ratios, the vNBR/rNBR blends with smallest size of rNBR particles exhibit lowest minimum torque (ML) compared with the bigger particle sizes of it in vNBR/rNBR blends which resulted in more efficient processing. The maximum torque (MH) of all vNBR/rNBR blends shows the inclining trend with increased rNBR. The cross-linking density of vNBR/rNBR blends also show an increasing trend with increasing rNBR content.

The challenges of using Epoxidised Natural Rubber (ENR) in truck tyre tread are to achieve good cure reversion resistant and physical properties especially on abrasion resistance towards long vulcanization time. The objectives of the project are to study the effects of vulcanization additive on cure characteristics and physical properties of silica filled ENR compound. In this work, a variation of curing systems were employed and a standard carbon black filled Natural Rubber/Butadiene Rubber (NR/BR) compound as a comparison. Greater reversion resistance and physical properties were observed with inclusion of vulcanization additive in the silica compound as compared to compound containing any. The abrasion resistance on the hand improved in spite of long vulcanisation time which commonly practices in truck tyre manufacturing. Keywords: ENR, silica, vulcanization additive, cure reversion, abrasion resistance

The role of activated carbon (AC) in rubber compounds was investigated to better understand the reinforcing mechanism. The activated carbon filled styrene butadiene rubber vulcanizates (SBR-AC) using bamboo activated carbon as filler were prepared by using two-roll mill and cured at 160 °C. AC filler loading from 10 to 50 phr (part per hundred rubber) were used in this study. Study into the influences of filler loading on the cure characteristics, swelling behaviour and physical properties (hardness and resilience) of SBR-AC vulcanizates were carried out. It was observed that SBR-AC vulcanizates has better cure characteristics compared to the styrene butadiene rubber gum vulcanizate (SBR-GV) which is a non-filled vulcanizate. The results showed that the scorch time (ts2) decreased with increasing filler loading. The cure time (tc90) slightly decreased up to 20 phr before a rise as the filler loading increased. The minimum torque (ML) of SBR vulcanizate increased and the maximum torque (MH) decreased up to 20 phr but then increased with increasing filler loading. The cure rate index (CRI) of SBR-GV vulcanizate was higher than that of all SBR-AC vulcanizates. Up to 20 phr of filler loading, the CRI increased before a decline occurred as the filler loading increased. As expected, the hardness value of SBR-AC vulcanizates was higher compared to SBR-GV vulcanizate which has lower resilience. The hardness and crosslink density showed an increasing trend meanwhile the resilience was adversely affected by the increase in filler loading. Bamboo activated carbon showed some potential enhancement on the reinforcing and physical properties of the vulcanizates.
