Mechanical properties of sand-pebble layer is very unstable, it is unfavourable for TBM excavation. For the reasons of poor soil conditioning and low plastic flow of muck, EPB TBM tunnel construction in sand-pebble layer of Beijing metro has exposed variety of issues: continuous dynamic earth pressure balance is hard to established, mud cake is formed frequently in earth chamber, key construction parameters such as thrust, torque, advance speed can not be controlled in reasonable scopes, which lead to low efficiency of TBM construction. Taking“Xi-Liu”of line 10 lot 11 as an research object, the mechanical characteristics of sand-pebble layer and construction problems of TBM advancing are analyzed, variety of soil conditioning measures are used for improving plastic flow of muck and minimizing construction influence induced by poor geological conditions, meanwhile contrast studies on key construction parameters before and after soil conditioning are carried out. The results indicate that effect of soil condition plays very significant roles in controlling TBM construction parameters and improving advancing efficiency.

The soil conditioning is a process of fundamental importance during the excavation of tunnels with Earth Pressure Balance full face machine. The soil conditioning is achieved through the addition of foam at the excavation face and in the bulk chamber that modifies the natural soil properties from solid-like to fluid-like with a pulpy behavior. Clearly, a material with a pulpy or fluid-like consistency is not suitable for the construction of embankments of landfill or for other civil purposes. It is therefore important to have a procedure able to identify how long it is necessary before the conditioned soil recovers its geo-mechanical properties, since this knowledge is needed at the design stages from a logistic point of view. The paper proposes and discusses a procedure to find out whether and when the conditioned soil gets back to its original properties. The procedure foresees direct shear tests, vane tests, Proctor tests, and rotational mixer tests at different time schedules from the production of the conditioned soil in the laboratory. The conditioned soil samples have been cured in a controlled environment up to 60 days from the conditioning. Thanks to these tests, it is possible to assess if and when the soil recovers its natural behavior or if a permanent alteration is induced. The proposed procedure has been applied to a standard alluvial soil showing that most of the original properties of the soil are recovered already after seven days from the conditioning. The carried-out tests have shown that the procedure is feasible and easy to apply.

In view of complex and fuzziness of geological adaptive cutterhead selection for earth pressure balance (EPB) shield, a cutterhead selection method based on BP neural network is put forward. Considering the structure characteristics of EPB shield cutterhead, typical cutterhead types are classified and summarized based on cutterhead topology structure and number of spokes. After analyzing the determinants of cutterhead selection, one-to-many mapping relation between cutterhead type and geological parameters is put forward, and then core geologic parameters related to cutterhead selection are concluded. The feasibility of using neural network method to choose the cutterhead type is analyzed, and a BP neural network training model for cutterhead selection is set up and tested in testing sample data. The result shows that the selected cutterhead and the construction cutterhead are basically consistent. The feasibility of this method is proved and it can be theoretical basis for the cutterhead structure design which will improve scientific of cutterhead selection.

Background: Earth pressure balance shield machines are widely used in underground engineering. To prevent ground deformation even disastrous accidents, the earth pressure in soil chamber must be kept balance to that on excavation face during shield tunneling. Therefore, in this paper an advanced control strategy that a least squares support vector machine model-based predictive control scheme for earth pressure balance is developed. Methods: A prediction model is established to predict the earth pressure in chamber during the tunneling process by means of least squares support vector machine technology. On this basis, an optimization function is given which aims at minimizing the difference between the predicted earth pressure and the desired one. To obtain the optimal control actions, an improved ant colony system algorithm is used as rolling optimization for earth pressure balance control in real time. Results: Based on the field data the simulation experiments are performed. The results demonstrate that the method proposed is very effective to control earth pressure balance, and it has good stability. Conclusion: The screw conveyor speed and advance speed are the major factors affecting the earth pressure in chamber. The excavation face could be controlled balance better by adjusting the screw conveyor speed and advance speed.
