In the present work, the CFD software FLUENT is used to calculate the ship resistance and simulate the flow field around it. Comparison of the numerical results with experimental data of the ship without interceptor shows basically satisfactory agreement in the case of high-speed. In order to get the right parameters of the interceptor for the ship, some two dimensional calculation is taken to study the influence of interceptor with different size. The simulation of the three dimensional vessel with interceptor is also included, and the effect is discussed.

The spatial problem of internal explosive loading of an elastoplastic cylindrical container filled with water in Eulerian - Lagrangian variables using multigrid algorithms is considered. A defining system of three-dimensional equations of the dynamics of gas, fluid, and elastoplastic medium is presented. For numerical modeling, a modification of S.K. Godunov scheme of the increased accuracy for both detonation products and liquids, and elastoplastic container is used. At the moving contact boundaries “detonation products - liquid”, “liquid - deformable body”, the exact solution of the Riemann's problem is used. A time dependent model is used to describe the propagation of steady-state detonation wave through an explosive from an initiation region. In both cases, the initiation of detonation occurs at the center of the charge. Two problems have been solved: the first task for the aisymmetric position of the charge, the second for the charge shifted relative to the axis of symmetry. In the first task, the processes are two-dimensional axisymmetric in nature, in the second task, the processes are essentially three-dimensional. A comparison is made of the results of calculations of the first problem using a three-dimensional method with a solution using a previously developed two-dimensional axisymmetric method and experimental data. Good agreement is observed between the numerical results for the maximum velocities and circumferential strains obtained by various methods and experimental data. There is good agreement between the numerical results obtained by various methods and the known experimental data. Comparison of the results of solving the first and second problems shows a significant effect of the position of the charge on the wave processes in the liquid, the processes of loading the container and its elastoplastic deformation. The dynamic behavior of a gas bubble with detonation products is analyzed. A significant deviation of the bubble shape from the spherical one, caused by the action of shock waves reflected from the structure, is shown. Comparison of the results of solving the first and second problems showed a significant effect of the charge position on wave processes in a liquid, the processes of loading a container and its elastoplastic deformation. In particular, in the second problem, shock waves of higher amplitude are observed in the liquid when reflected from the walls of the container.

<p>Combined external-internal flow simulation is required for the estimation of aerodynamic forces and moments of high speed air-breathing vehicle design. A wingless, X-tail configuration with asymmetrically placed rectangular air intake is numerically explored for which experimental data is available for different angles of attack. The asymmetrically placed air intakes and protrusions make the flow field highly three-dimensional and existing empirical relations are inadequate for preliminary design. Three dimensional Navier Stokes equations along with SST-kω turbulence model were solved with a commercial CFD solver to analyse the combined external and internal flow field of the configuration at different angles of attack. Estimated aerodynamic coefficients match well with experimental data and estimated drag coefficient are within 8.5 per cent of experimental data. Intake performance parameters were also evaluated for different angles of attack.</p>

When assessing the effectiveness of ammunition designed to destroy various aerodynamic and ballistic targets, as the initial data on the vulnerability of the destruction objective, we use indicators obtained during experimental studies of the processes of fragments and fragment flow collision with various fragments of the target design. The results depend not only on the speed and mass of individual fragments, but also on their shape and location in the flow. The paper gives the results of the testing of an explosive thrower which provides the creation of a high-speed, i.e. ~5 km/s, flow of fragments of a given shape. Findings of research show satisfactory agreement between the results of calculations carried out in two- and three-dimensional statements with experimental data on high-speed throwing of a group of compact, parallelepiped, steel preformed fragments weighing 20 g each

The traditional method for hydrodynamic journal bearing analysis usually applies the lubrication theory based on the Reynolds equation and suitable empirical modifications to cover turbulence, heat transfer, and cavitation. In cases of complex bearing geometries for steam and heavy-duty gas turbines this approach has its obvious restrictions in regard to detail flow recirculation, mixing, mass balance, and filling level phenomena. These limitations could be circumvented by applying a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach resting closer to the fundamental physical laws. The present contribution reports about the state of the art of such a fully three-dimensional multiphase-flow CFD approach including cavitation and air entrainment for high-speed turbo-machinery journal bearings. It has been developed and validated using experimental data. Due to the high ambient shear rates in bearings, the multiphase-flow model for journal bearings requires substantial modifications in comparison to common two-phase flow simulations. Based on experimental data, it is found, that particular cavitation phenomena are essential for the understanding of steam and heavy-duty type gas turbine journal bearings.

After a shaft failure the compression system of a gas turbine is likely to surge due to the heavy vibrations induced on the engine after the breakage. Unlike at any other conditions of operation, compressor surge during a shaft over-speed event is regarded as desirable as it limits the air flow across the engine and hence the power available to accelerate the free turbine. It is for this reason that the proper prediction of the engine performance during a shaft over-speed event claims for an accurate modelling of the compressor operation at reverse flow conditions. The present study investigates the ability of the existent two dimensional algorithms to simulate the compressor performance in backflow conditions. Results for a three stage axial compressor at reverse flow were produced and compared against stage by stage experimental data published by Gamache. The research shows that due to the strong radial fluxes present over the blades, two dimensional approaches are inadequate to provide satisfactory results. Three dimensional effects and inaccuracies are accounted for by the introduction of a correction parameter that is a measure of the pressure loss across the blades. Such parameter is tailored for rotors and stators and enables the satisfactory agreement between calculations and experiments in a stage by stage basis. The paper concludes with the comparison of the numerical results with the experimental data supplied by Day on a four stage axial compressor.

In a joint project between the Institute of Aircraft Propulsion Systems (ILA) and MTU Aero Engines a two-stage low pressure turbine is tested at design and strong off-design conditions. The experimental data taken in the altitude test-facility aims to study the effect of positive and negative incidence of the second stator vane. A detailed insight and understanding of the blade row interactions at these regimes is sought. Steady and time-resolved pressure measurements on the airfoil as well as inlet and outlet hot-film traverses at identical Reynolds number are performed for the midspan streamline. The results are compared with unsteady multi-stage CFD predictions. Simulations agree well with the experimental data and allow detailed insights in the time-resolved flow-field. Airfoil pressure field responses are found to increase with positve incidence whereas at negative incidence the magnitude remains unchanged. Different pressure to suction side phasing is observed for the studied regimes. The assessment of unsteady blade forces reveals that changes in unsteady lift are minor compared to changes in axial force components. These increase with increasing positive incidence. The wake-interactions are predominating the blade responses in all regimes. For the positive incidence conditions vane 1 passage vortex fluid is involved in the midspan passage interaction leading to a more distorted three-dimensional flow field.

The laminar-turbulent transition process in a parallel boundary-layer with Blasius profile is simulated by numerical integration of the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using a spectral method. The model of spatially periodic disturbances developing in time is used. Both the classical Klebanoff-type and the subharmonic type of transition are simulated. Maps of the three-dimensional velocity and vorticity fields and visualizations by integrated fluid markers are obtained. The numerical results are compared with experimental measurements and flow visualizations by other authors. Good qualitative and quantitative agreement is found at corresponding stages of development up to the one-spike stage. After the appearance of two-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting waves of sufficiently large amplitude an increasing three-dimensionality is observed. In particular, a peak-valley structure of the velocity fluctuations, mean longitudinal vortices and sharp spike-like instantaneous velocity signals are formed. The flow field is dominated by a three-dimensional horseshoe vortex system connected with free high-shear layers. Visualizations by time-lines show the formation of A-structures. Our numerical results connect various observations obtained with different experimental techniques. The initial three-dimensional steps of the transition process are consistent with the linear theory of secondary instability. In the later stages nonlinear interactions of the disturbance modes and the production of higher harmonics are essential.We also study the control of transition by local two-dimensional suction and blowing at the wall. It is shown that transition can be delayed or accelerated by superposing disturbances which are out of phase or in phase with oncoming Tollmien-Schlichting instability waves, respectively. Control is only effective if applied at an early, two-dimensional stage of transition. Mean longitudinal vortices remain even after successful control of the fluctuations.

The present paper deals with the numerical and experimental investigation of the effect of return channel (RCH) dimensions of a centrifugal compressor stage on the aerodynamic performance. Three different return channel stages were investigated, two stages comprising three-dimensional (3D) return channel blades and one stage comprising two-dimensional (2D) RCH vanes. The analysis was performed regarding both the investigation of overall performance (stage efficiency, RCH total pressure loss coefficient) and detailed flow-field performance. For detailed experimental flow-field investigation at the stage exit, six circumferentially traversed three-hole probes were positioned downstream the return channel exit in order to get two-dimensional flow-field information. Additionally, static pressure wall measurements were taken at the hub and shroud pressure and suction side (SS) of the 2D and 3D return channel blades. The return channel system overall performance was calculated by measurements of the circumferentially averaged 1D flow field downstream the diffuser exit and downstream the stage exit. Dependent on the type of return channel blade, the numerical and experimental results show a significant effect on the flow field overall and detail performance. In general, satisfactory agreement between computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-prediction and test-rig measurements was achieved regarding overall and flow-field performance. In comparison with the measurements, the CFD-calculated stage performance (efficiency and pressure rise coefficient) of all the 3D-RCH stages was slightly overpredicted. Very good agreement between CFD and measurement results was found for the static pressure distribution on the RCH wall surfaces while small CFD-deviations occur in the measured flow angle at the stage exit, dependent on the turbulence model selected.
