This paper presents the experimental results on the utilisation of Rice Hush Ash (RHA) as a replacement for mineral filler in asphaltic concrete pavement in Malaysia. Asphaltic concrete mixes containing RHA at different amounts and control specimens were prepared in accordance to Marshall Mix design, and their performance on stability, flow and bulk density were evaluated. Optimum binder content (OBC) and voids analysis were also conducted to compare performance of RHA at different contents. Results reveal that all RHA mixes have satisfied the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) specification on wearing course in regard with Marshall Stability and Flow, especially RHA-75. This material is potentially to be used as partial or fully substitution of mineral filler (stone dust) in pavement construction.

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is a combination of asphalt and aggregates that will give durable road surface for pavement and is widely used in Malaysia. However, due to damages caused by excessive traffic loadings, the HMA pavement normally required frequently maintenance and rehabilitation works. Therefore in recent years, research on modification of HMA has tremendously increased in highway construction field using natural sources and recycling products such as rubber, plastic, anti-stripping agents, waste materials and etc. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) used as filler in HMA. Experimental laboratory were done to compare the properties of normal HMA sample with modified HMA sample using SCBA. Result obtained for both sample were compared to Malaysian Public Works Department (MPWD) specification. The laboratory result reveals that SCBA are effective in increasing the Marshall stability, flow and Resilient Modulus of normal HMA. The SCBA increases Marshall stability by 0.6%, flow 4.9% and Resilient Modulus 17.4% respectively of ordinary HMA and all test and analysis parameters for asphaltic concrete of SCBA sample comply with MPWD requirements. Therefore, SCBA has potential in modifying normal HMA.

There are two processes of adding crumb rubber modifier (CRM) to hot mix asphalt (HMA), that is, the wet process and the dry process; and different technologies are available for each process. On the basis of the results of the binder study and producer's practices, HMA specimens were prepared using two selected AR binders with Producer R and A CRMs for Rhode Island (RI) dense-graded and dense-graded friction course (DGFC) mixtures, respectively. Aggregates procured from four local asphalt contractors were used. In addition, gap-graded HMA specimens were prepared with 3 percent CRM and control AC-20 binder with two typical local aggregates using the dry process. Marshall mix design was performed on all mixtures to determine optimum binder content and Marshall properties. Mechanical properties were evaluated for the mixtures with and without CRM. Superpave Level I mix design was also performed for dense-graded, DGFC, and gap-graded mixtures with aggregates procured from Contractor C. Finally, the performance of pavements with and without CRM was predicted using the computer program VESYS. Results of this study indicated that the use of CRM is feasible for RI dense-graded and DGFC mixtures utilizing the wet process.

The effect of coarse aggregate on pavement performance has been attributed to the volume of aggregate used in pavement construction. The different patterns of crack development for limestone (LS) and siliceous river gravel (SRG) are a typical example of aggregate-induced variable performance in continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). An attempt was made to find a reasonable solution for pavements with SRG. As a way to solve the performance problem observed from the SRG pavement, a blended aggregates mixture was suggested. Laboratory and field tests were performed to check the feasibility of their application in pavements. From the laboratory test, a 50:50 blending ratio was suggested after considering the effect on tensile strength and thermal coefficient of expansion. Field test sections were also constructed to verify previous performance observations for the two aggregates and to provide performance data for new variables such as blended aggregates and special curing methods. Unexpectedly, the blended mixture did not improve the performance of SRG pavement; rather it experienced worse cracking than SRG alone. A controlled experiment with additional field test sections is needed to verify or disprove this finding. The only definitive finding was that selection of aggregate in the concrete pavement is a vital consideration for the design of the pavement. The CRCP8 analytical program reasonably predicted crack spacing for both SRG and LS pavements, predicting mean crack spacing of 0.99 m (3.25 ft) for SRG and 1.98 m (6.41 ft) for the limestone. These values are somewhat below the actual spacing observed at 100 days. Data collected after the first winter period will be required to calibrate the program.

In this review article, the usage of bitumen, sisal fiber and the sisal fiber for improving the strength parameters of concrete is discussed in detail. Numerous research studies related to the usage of bitumen, sisal fiber and stone dust are studied in detail to determine the results and outcome out of it. Previous research works showed that all, these materials were enhancing the strength and durability aspects of the concrete and depending upon the research studies certain outcomes has been drawn which are as follows. The studies related to the usage of the bitumen or asphalt in concrete so as to produce bituminous concrete or asphaltic concrete, the previous research works conclude that the maximum strength was attained at 5 percent usage of the bitumen and after further usage the general compressive strength of the concrete starts declining. The previous studies related to the usage of the sisal fiber showed that with the usage of the sisal fiber in the concrete, the strength aspects of concrete were improving and the maximum strength was obtained at 1.5 percent usage of the sisal fiber and after his the strength starts declining. Further the studies related to the usage of the stone dust showed that with the usage of stone dust as partial replacement of the natural fine aggregate the compressive strength of the concrete was improving and it was conclude that with the increase in the percentage of the stone dust, the compressive strength of the concrete was increasing.

Although small amount of binder in asphalt concrete mixture may commonly range from 3.5 to 5.5% of total mixture as per many international specifications, it has a significant impact on the total cost of pavement construction. Therefore, this paper investigated the effects of five carbon nanotubes contents of 0.05%, 0.1%, 0.15%, 0.2%, 0.25% by asphalt weight as an additive material for binder on performance characteristics of asphalt mixtures. Performance properties of CNTs modified asphalt mixtures were investigated through the Marshall stability (MS) test, indirect tensile (IDT) test, static modulus (SM) test, wheel tracking (WT) test. The results indicated that asphalt mixtures with CNT modified binder can improve both the rutting performance, IDT strength and marshall stability of tested asphalt mixtures significantly at higher percentages of carbon nanotubes. However, the issue that should be considered is the construction cost of asphalt pavement. Based on the asphalt pavement structural analysis and construction cost, it can be concluded that an optimum CNT content of 0.1% by asphalt weight may be used as additive for asphalt binder in asphalt mixtures.

El gobierno constituyó la Junta Federal de Mejoras Materiales para administrar y controlar los recursos económicos y la construcción de obras públicas en las fronteras y los puertos de México. El objetivo general de esta investigación fue analizar cómo se instauró y funcionó dicho organismo en Ciudad Juárez, en el contexto de la centralización/federalización de los recursos hídricos del país, de 1931 a 1936; para ello se revisaron los archivos históricos. Una de las limitaciones del estudio fue el desconocimiento de los antecedentes de la administración de los recursos hídricos en este poblado. Por lo que su aportación amplía el conocimiento escaso que había sobre el funcionamiento de las juntas en las fronteras. Entre los descubrimientos se puede citar que en el Ayuntamiento de Juárez, la pérdida de autonomía en la administración de las aguas se sumó a un despojo material y económico, en el que intervinieron varias instituciones y dependencias de gobierno. Water management and the nation’s resources: the Federal Board of Material Improvements, Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, 1931-1936The government constituted the Federal Board of Material Improvements in order to manage and control the economic resources and the construction of public works at México’s borders and ports. The general purpose of this research was to analyze how this agency was established and operated in Ciudad Juarez, in the context of the centralization/federalization of the country’s water resources, from 1931 to 1936, and, to this end, the historical archives were reviewed. One of the study’s limitations was the lack of background information about the management of the water resources in this town. Its contribution broadens the scarce existing knowledge about the boards’ functioning at the borders. Among the findings made, it can be mentioned that in the municipality of Juarez the loss of autonomy concerning water management was accompanied by a material and economic dispossession, in which several government institutions and agencies participated.
