The article analyzes various aspects of the relationship between the largest confessional groups of the Belarusian provinces of the Russian Empire (Orthodox and Catholics) in the late 19th – early 20th centuries in the context of the implementation of the models of self-identification «our – other» and «our – alien». Particular attention is paid to the characteristics of the activities of Catholic clergy and fanatical parishioners to incite interfaith hostility (insults to representatives of another confession, unfounded calls for conversion to Catholicism, erroneous interpretation of the Decree «On strengthening the principles of religious tolerance» and the Manifesto of October 17, 1905, and etc.). The authority that Catholic priests had among the parishioners often caused the latter to be hostile to their neighbors of other faiths. The article provides many examples of the fact that the appearance of fanatical priests in a certain area often disrupted the peaceful, conflict-free course of religious life. At the same time, there were cases when the erroneous actions of Orthodox priests and ordinary parishioners became a catalyst for the exacerbation of interfaith relations. The article provides factual evidence of the propaganda activities of Catholic priests in the Polish national spirit, analyzes the reaction of the authorities to it. The most resonant conflict between Catholics and Orthodox at the beginning of the twentieth century is described in detail – an episode in the town of Zelva, Volkovysk district, Grodno province. The basis of the source base of the article was made up of documents of the National Historical Archives of Belarus and the National Historical Archives of Belarus in Grodno. This article can be useful for specialists in history, students, everyone interested in the problems of religious and national relations in European countries. We see prospects for further research in this area in a comparative analysis of the situation in Belarus and other regions of Central and Eastern Europe of the 20th – 21th centuries, mixed in confessional and ethnic terms.

Background. The historical chronology of the creation of the state system of dental care organization in Ukraine reveals the first steps of formation and further development of dentistry as an integral part of scientific and clinical medicine. In 1920, a fundamentally new organizational and economic model of dental care with state funding was introduced in Ukraine, which provided for the coverage of the entire population of the country. The long history is the best basis for the analysis of the passed evolutionary way of dental care development in Ukraine. Objective: to study the historiography of dentistry formation as an independent discipline of scientific and clinical medicine, organization of the state dental service in Ukraine based on the results of research of archival materials of normative-legal documents. Materials and methods. Materials of the main archival documents of the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kyiv for 1919–1920 were studied and analyzed. The materials of the study were the main normative-legal documents regulating dental care: Order of the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukrainian SSR No. 3 dated April 5, 1920 “On the organization of dental sections at the provincial health departments”; Order of the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukrainian SSR No. 4 dated April 10, 1920 “On the organization of state dental care”; instructions to paragraph 2 of the Order of the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukrainian SSR No. 4 dated April 10, 1920 “On state dental care”; instruction “On the issues of the decision of dentistry in state outpatient clinics” approved by the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukrainian SSR on April 13, 1920; “Plan for the organization of dental care provision to the population of Ukraine” approved by the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukrainian SSR on June 26, 1920. The research methods were the historical one, which involves the study of the creation, formation and development of objects in chronological order; and historical-critical one, which involves the extraction of reliable information from historical sources, the reconstruction of historical facts in order to study the history of events. Results. On the basis of archival materials of normative-legal documents of the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kyiv, a historical-critical analysis of the creation of the state system of dental service organization in Ukraine for 1919–1920 was conducted. The orders, directives and instructions approved by People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukraine reveal the first steps in building and implementing a new organizational and economic model of dental care. The created healthcare system was based on the provision of social medical dental care by the state to every citizen of Ukraine. Conclusions. Historiographical analysis of normative-legal documents reveals the formation of dentistry as an integral part of highly qualified medical care. The introduced new organizational and economic model of providing social dental care to the population of Ukraine was based on the principles of gratuitousness, availability, proficiency, integration and prevention of dental diseases. Dental care for the population of Ukraine included the construction of a network system of state outpatient clinics, dental departments as a part of multidisciplinary clinics, dental departments and offices in hospitals, which were subordinated to the provincial odontological subdepartments and the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Ukrainian SSR. The new model of state regulation was grounded on the planning and control of the provision of social dental care on the basis of state funding. The main tasks of the created healthcare system were the introduction of organizational measures aimed at mass coverage of free dental care for the citizens of Ukraine. An important area of dental care was the creation of school offices for the prevention of dental di-seases of the oral cavity in organized children’s groups.

Introduction. The article examines additional comments (1929–1932) made by Professor N. N. Palmov on his Essays on the History of the Volga Kalmyks (1926). Goals. The study seeks to introduce this new material which shows the scholar’s persistent interest in the subject and, at the same time, contributes to a better understanding of the history of the Kalmyk Khanate. Materials and Methods. The research involved the identification of the chronological framework of the handwritten material, its categorization into thematic blocks, and contribution to the subject. Results. In the library of Astrakhan State Museum of Historical Archives, the authors discovered thirty seven handwritten additions made by Palmov on the pages of his copy of Essays on the History of the Volga Kalmyks, vols. I–II. These were made between 1929 to 1932 when the scholar apparently continued his studies on the subject using the materials of Astrakhan Kalmyk Archives and scientific literature. The author’s comments covering the period up to the 1760s contain valuable data on the 1702 conflict between Khan Ayuka and his sons and provide detail on the feudal conflict of 1724. Also, Palmov provides additional evidence on Noyon Donduk-Ombo’s activities during the period of feudal wars and, later, when he was Kalmyk Khan. Finally, the comments include important data on the foreign policy of the Kalmyk Khanate, chiefly the history of its interaction with the Dzungar Khanate in the 17th–18th centuries. Conclusions. Palmov’s handwritten comments discovered on the pages of his Essays on the History of the Volga Kalmyks are a significant contribution to his scientific heritage that sheds light on the history of feudal strife in the Kalmyk Khanate in the 1720s–1730s.

Abstract Improving the knowledge of the seismic history of a region plays a key role in the evaluation of recurrence relations for probabilistic seismic hazard analyses. In this study, we present the results of an investigation carried out in two local historical archives in northeast Sicily, Italy. Several letters, petitions, and reports describing the effects of some earthquakes that occurred between the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries in the Gulf of Patti area were found and analyzed. This contributed in filling the knowledge gap about a series of moderate-to-large seismic events that were overshadowed by catastrophic earthquakes with major impacts both on human losses and cultural heritage. We describe this experience in the hope that other historians will take up the work, looking for other northeast Sicily local archives to investigate because we believe this is the right way toward a better definition of the seismic history of one of the most seismically active regions of Italy.

Curling disease in long historical photos significantly affects the presentation of cultural heritage information. However, people lack attention to the formation process and microstructural changes of photo curling. In this article, a long historical photo (1912–1949 AD) collected by the Second Historical Archives of China was taken as the research object, and the formation process and cause of the curling were further explored. Firstly, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray energy disperse spectrometer (EDS), and other instruments were used to analyze the material composition of the long historical photo. It was found that the photographic paper was made of gelatin, barium sulfate, and plant fiber layers. Then, the effects of hygrothermal environments on curling and contraction in the gelatin layer and simulated photographic paper were explored. Meanwhile, the formation process and main influence factors of the curling were preliminarily revealed. The morphological analysis by SEM was carried out to identify the inner correlation between the microstructure and curling of photos. Finally, the possible formation cause of photo curling was analyzed. This study provides a scientific basis and experimental data for the preservation and restoration of long historical photos based on gelatin.

The wireless communication network has a huge promotion effect on data processing. As an important standard for internet data transmission, XML markup language is currently widely used in the internet. The rapid development of XML has brought fresh blood to the research of database. This article is aimed at studying the application of wireless network communication in the storage of the XML metadata database of Wushu Historical Archives. One part uses data load-balancing algorithms and two-way path constraint algorithms to conduct research on the metadata storage of XML databases, such as document size, document loading, and document query. Combining wireless technology and comparing with SGML and HTML, it highlights the flexibility and importance of XML database. The other part analyzes the XML database of Wushu Historical Archives itself and uses questionnaire surveys combined with the experience of 30 users randomly checked to provide constructive suggestions for the construction of XML database, such as strengthening the operation page design, text, and graphics. The experimental results show that the time consumed by the XML database in the case of bidirectional path indexing is 0.37 s, and the time consumed in the case of unidirectional path indexing is 0.27 s. This data shows that the application of wireless network communication technology has played an important role in the easy update and flexibility of the XML database. The data load capacity presented by the two path indexes is inconsistent; the current experience of XML database mainly focuses on the copy of the database quantity.
