In recent years, the photocatalytic properties of nano TiO2(nanotitanium dioxide) is one of today’s hottest issues of environmentally friendly materials, medical materials and building materials fields. In this paper, we present the latest research on nanotitanium dioxide to be used in the field of building materials. Based on the history of the photocatalytic properties of nanotitanium dioxide, the application of nanotitanium dioxide in photocatalytic concrete, photocatalytic ceramics, functional coatings and materials in the field of self-cleaning glass has been analyzed. Finally, further research will focus on nanotitanium dioxide used in the field of building materials.

Public awareness of the need to protect the environment deepens and expands to new areas of life, including new technologies used in civil engineering. These technologies include, among others, the technology of photocatalytic concrete products, which are capable of purifying air. The use of this type of technology is closely linked with the campaign for Sustainable Development. The article discusses the photocatalytic properties of titanium dioxide and its use in various industries. The test results of TioCem® CEM II/A-S 42.5 cement and Portland CEM I 42.5 cement based on experiments performed with bars made of standardized mortar are presented.

In this article powdered composites of titanium dioxide and silica with high-developed surface(183–534 m2 / g), synthesized from industrial wastes, are considered as photocatalytic concrete additives. Their composition was studied, and the photocatalytic performance was evaluated by decomposition of the dye “Methylene blue” under UV-irradiation. The surfactant’s concentration at which the photocatalytic activity reaches its highest values was determined.
