As wind is random, intermittent and instability, with continual installation of wind farms, the impact of large scale wind farm on power system has become an important issue for integration and operation of wind farm. Aiming at studying the transient stability of district grid containing high proportion of wind power, numerical simulations with BPA for an actual district grid of China Southern Power Grid are presented. In these simulations, the interaction between the large-scale wind farm and traditional thermal power plants (TPPs) is investigated taking the different operating modes and fault location into account. The critical clearing time (CCT) is adopted as the measurable indicator to assess the interaction.

Datong area has abundant wind energy. Due to problem in large scale of wind power grid connection, this paper introduces virtual power plant concept. As for beginning, power source characteristics of the wind farm, pumped storage power station and the thermal power plant are taken for analysis. Three types of different power plants are chosen to represent the virtual power plant modeling as well as adopting the NSGA2 optimization. As a conclusion, this case study proved that virtual power plant can increase the benefits of each power plant and the wind power plant output power curve become smoother.

According to the characteristics of the wind farm measuration and the impact of bad data on the state estimation, this paper introduces the reference value of measurement type and the bad data reference factor into the weight function, and then presents the calculation method of state estimation method for solving residual contamination problem caused by large-scale wind power integration. In order to improve the software computing speed and the data section real-time performance of robust state estimation, using parallel algorithms to do Givens transformation. Finally, the simulation tests of a regional power grid to prove that the proposed method can effectively identify telemetry bad data of wind farms eliminate residual pollution caused by it, which improve the speed and accuracy of the State Estimation.

In recent years, wind power penetration into the grid has increased rapidly with abundant wind resources in Jiuquan, according to the policy of the Chinese government to “establish a ‘Hexi Wind Power Corridor’ and rebuild another Western ‘Terrestrial Three Gorges Dam’”. By the end of 2010, the total installed capacity of wind power in Jiuquan has reached 5160 MW. The wind farms are connected to 110 kV transmission network or above in Jiuquan, the studies of their impacts on the grid, in particular, the grid operation are becoming serious and urgent. Jiuquan is far away from the load center with a weak grid configuration, therefore issues such as transmission line overloading, local grid voltage fluctuation, and transient stability limitation are looming with large scale wind power integration. The power system dispatch and operation are influenced by the intermittent nature of the wind power, which should be regulated by the system reserves. This paper discusses the recent integration of wind power into the grid with a focus on the impact on the Gansu power grid operation. The paper also presents the measures to deal with these issues.

Recently, the development of Chinese wind power generation has formally entered the strategic transformation stage with the combination of large-scale integrated exploitation and distributed access exploitation. It is suitable to adopt distribution access mode due to the characteristics of Chongqings planning wind farm including small generation capacity and distributed location. However, considering that most of planning wind farms are located in the mountain area of northeast and southeast Chongqing with the large-scale geographic area and small load request and the distribution networks are relatively weak, there may be remarkable effect on quality of electric energy even though the distribution access mode is adopted. In this paper, aiming at the voltage fluctuation of access point, the relationships among variables affecting the voltage fluctuation is analyzed, then taking two planning wind farms in northeast and southeast Chongqing respectively as examples, the effects of voltage fluctuation caused by different access points are calculated and analyzed in order to get the allowed maximum capacity of wind farms fitting national standards. In the end, the proposals relevant to the development of wind power and contribution of distribution network are submitted according to the case results.

Some faults will result wind turbine generators off-grid due to low grid voltage , furthermore, large-scale wind farms tripping can result in severe system oscillation and aggravate system transient instability . In view of this, static compensator (STATCOM) is installed in the grid containing large-scale wind farm. A voltage feedforward control strategy is proposed to adjust the reactive power of STATCOM compensation and ensure that the grid voltage is quickly restored to a safe range. The mathematical model of the doubly-fed induction wind generator (DFIG) is proposed. The control strategy of DFIG uses PI control for rotor angular velocity and active power. 4-machine system simulation results show that the STATCOM reactive power compensation significantly improve output active power of large-scale wind farm satisfying transient stability, reduce the probability of the tripping, and improve the utilization efficiency of wind farms.

The importance of renewable energy and especially of eolian systems is growing. For this reason, we propose the investigation of an important pollutant - the noise, which has become so important that European Commission and European Parliament introduced Directive 2002/49/CE relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. So far, priority has been given to very large-scale systems connected to national energy systems, wind farms whose highly variable output power could be regulated by large power systems. Nowadays, with the development of small storage capacities, it is feasible to install small power wind turbines in cities of up to 10,000 inhabitants too. As a case study, we propose a simulation for a rural locality where individual wind units could be used. This specific case study is interesting because it provides a new perspective of the impact of noise on the quality of life when the use of this type of system is implemented on a large scale. This option, of distributed and small power wind turbine, can be implemented in the future as an alternative or an adding to the common systems.

Advantages of wind power are self-evident, but the impact of wind power project on the local ecological environment and natural landscape is also increasingly subject to public attention. It mainly reflects in the visual pollution of the wind turbine (or natural landscape problems), noise, bird safety and electromagnetic interference. The paper analyzed the impact of wind farms on the environment, and recommended appropriate preventions and control measures to reduce it to an acceptable level.

With the process acceleration of China’s energy conservation and the full development of the market economy, the environmental protection is to coexist with the power plants’ benefits for thermal power plants. Relative to the traditional mode named “determining power by heat”, it is not adequate that the heating demand is only to be met, the maximizations of economy benefits and social benefits are also demanded. At present, several large-scale central heating modes are proposed by domestic and foreign scholars, such as the parallel arrangement and series arrangement of heating system for the traditional heating units and NCB heating units (NCB heating unit is a new condensing-extraction-backpressure steam turbine and used to generate the power and heat, it has the function of extraction heating turbine at constant power, back pressure turbine or extraction and back pressure heating turbine and extraction condensing heating turbine.), and running mode with heating units and absorbed heat pumps, and so on. Compare and analyze their heating efficiency, heating load, heating area, power generation, and the impact on the environment. The best heating mode can be found under the different boundary conditions, it can be used to instruct the further work. The energy utilization efficiency will be further improved.

Due to the fluctuations and intermittency of wind power, large-scale wind farms integration will cause adverse impact on the safety and stability of the system, such as harmonic pollution, bad power quality, system stability destruction. On the basis of multiple constraints, including hydropower’s and thermal power’s operating characteristics, determination of reserve capacity considering wind power forecasting bias, climbing speed constraints, and maximum output constraints, this paper proposed a control strategy of joint coordination of wind, hydropower and thermal power, which suppressed the fluctuations of wind power effectively. At last, the article give a simulation to verify the feasibility of the control strategy to stabilize system frequency.
