The current study presents a novel approach to the selective identification and localization of voltage fluctuation sources in power grids, considering individual disturbing loads changing their state with a frequency of up to 150 Hz. The implementation of the proposed approach in the existing infrastructure of smart metering allows for the identification and localization of the individual sources of disturbances in real time. The proposed approach first performs the estimation of the modulation signal using a carrier signal estimator, which allows for a modulation signal with a frequency greater than the power frequency to be estimated. In the next step, the estimated modulating signal is decomposed into component signals associated with individual sources of voltage fluctuations using an enhanced empirical wavelet transform. In the last step, a statistical evaluation of the propagation of component signals with a comparable fundamental frequency is performed, which allows for the supply point of a particular disturbing load to be determined. The proposed approach is verified in numerical simulation studies using MATLAB/SIMULINK and in experimental studies carried out in a real low-voltage power grid. The research carried out shows that the proposed approach allows for the selective identification and localization of voltage fluctuation sources changing their state with a frequency of up to 150 Hz, unlike other methods currently used in practice.

As a renewable source, the uncertainties and intermittencies of solar irradiance have become the main concern in developing and integrating such power generation into an electricity network. In power system operation, it is important to maintain a stable voltage profile under random power injection from renewable power generations. The effect of photovoltaic (PV) power plants on the static voltage stability of the interconnected power system is presented in this paper. The probabilistic study was conducted through Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) to investigate the fluctuation of voltage profiles under uncertain power injection from PV power plants. The standard test system of IEEE 14 bus and practical test system of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara electricity network are investigated. It was noticed that the installation of a photovoltaic power plant affected the voltage profiles. The fluctuated condition of power injection from PV power plant resulted in more fluctuation of voltage profiles as indicated by higher standard deviation values. Moreover, distributed location of the PV power plant also influenced the circumstances of voltage fluctuation, providing less fluctuated condition of voltage profiles. Eventually, it can be observed that the voltage fluctuation would influence the static voltage stability of the interconnected power system.

In recent years, the violation and fluctuation of system voltage has occurred with greater frequency with the integration of high-penetration distributed photovoltaic generation. In this paper, the voltage violation and fluctuation in a high-penetration distributed photovoltaic integrated system is analyzed, and then a corresponding suppression strategy is proposed. Firstly, based on solar cell and photovoltaic control system models, the influence factors of photovoltaic output are analyzed. Secondly, the voltage violation and fluctuation caused by photovoltaic integration is analyzed, and the quadratic parabola relationship between bus voltage fluctuation and photovoltaic power variation is constructed. Next, according to the virtual synchronous generator characteristic of distributed photovoltaics, a double-hierarchical suppression strategy is proposed to make full use of reactive power regulation capability, which can maintain the symmetry of power supply while meeting standard requirements. The proposed strategy can conveniently realize quick response and support the photovoltaic extensive access. Moreover, with the employment of the proposal, the system voltage violation and fluctuation can be suppressed effectively. Finally, considering the photovoltaic access location, capacity, and partial shading, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy is verified in IEEE 33-bus distribution system with field measured data. After distributed photovoltaic accesses the system, more than 60% of buses appear to have undergone bus voltage violation. With the proposed method, more than 20% of the voltage deviation and more than 6% of the voltage fluctuation are effectively suppressed so that the system voltage can be kept below 1.07 p.u. and the voltage fluctuation can be kept within 4%, meeting the requirements of power quality standards.

Purpose Voltage fluctuation (flicker) is a power quality disturbance that can produce several undesirable effects on industrial equipment. This paper aims to present the methodology and results of investigations undertaken to examine the speed and torque of an induction motor (IM) under voltage fluctuation conditions. Design/methodology/approach The IM response to different characteristics of voltage fluctuations is presented. It will be shown that under a special condition the IM torque can even reach two times the rated torque. To show how this occurs, a qualitative discussion is given on the motor response by linearized equations. Findings The small-signal analysis was used to determine the frequency which leads to maximum speed fluctuations. It was shown that, if the motor is excited with a modulation frequency (resonant frequency) which is one of its natural frequencies (modes), the mode will act as a fluctuating amplifier and greatly increase the amplitude of torque and speed fluctuations. Sensitivity analysis is also carried out to evaluate the influence of motor parameters on the resonance frequency. The results show that the resonance frequency is not affected at all by the changes in magnetizing reactance. This has been shown that magnetic saturation does not have any impact on the resonance frequency. The most effective parameters are rotor and stator resistances. Originality/value With the increasing popularity and use of arc furnace loads in the metallurgy industry and due to the wide application of large IMs in the industry, it is possible that the frequency of torque pulsation locates near a natural frequency and then will create an oscillation with a large magnitude, potentially leading to accelerated fatigue or severe damage of shaft. However, if this phenomenon occurs in industries, the resonance frequency must be filtered from the input voltage. Experimental results on a 1.1 kW, 380 V, 50 Hz, 2 pole IM are used to validate the accuracy of simulation results.
