The pure phase red phosphor yttrium borate doped with Eu3+was prepared by a new solid state reaction named high temperature ball milling method. The phosphor was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and luminescence spectra. The results show that the single phase YBO3:Eu3+phosphor was obtained at 600°C, which is obviously decreased in contrast to conventional solid state reaction method. The particles are approximately nanometer size with narrow distribution range and spherical morphology. In emission spectra, the strongest peak at 597nm is due to the transition5D0→7F1 of Eu3+ions under 394nm monitoring wavelength. The luminescent properties of YBO3:Eu3+phosphor with 25 mol% doping concentration of Eu3+is optimal.

Powder of Pr-doped CaTiO3 red phosphor was prepared at 1473 K by a conventional solid-state reaction method with addition of B2O3 or SiO2 as a flux. Primary particle sizes of the prepared samples were increased by using B2O3 flux but decreased by using SiO2 flux. Clear planes, edges, or steps were observed on surfaces of the primary particles. The intensity of photoluminescence induced by irradiation of light with a wavelength longer than ∼350 nm was enhanced about three times by using B2O3 flux. The intensity of photoluminescence induced by irradiation of light with a wavelength shorter than ∼350 nm was enhanced about twice by using either B2O3 or SiO2 fluxes. The origin for the flux effects is discussed.

Novel Eu3+-activated M7Sn(PO4)6 (where M = Sr, Ba) red-emitting phosphors were synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction method at 1200 ?C for 2 h. The luminescence properties of the prepared samples and quenching concentration of Sr7-xSn(PO4)6 :xEu3+ and Ba7-xSn(PO4)6 :xEu3+ were investigated. These phosphors can be efficiently excited by UV (395 nm) and visible blue (465 nm) light nicely matching the output wavelengths of the near-UV LEDs and InGaN blue LED chips and emit the red light. The critical concentrations of the Eu3+ activator were found to be 0.175mol and 0.21mol per formula unit for Sr7-xSn(PO4)6 :xEu3+ and Ba7-xSn(PO4)6 :xEu3+, respectively. The M7-xSn(PO4)6 :xEu3+ (M = Sr, Ba) phosphor may be a good candidate for light-emitting diodes application.

Crystalline La doped Cu-Zn ferrite with compositions Cu0.15Zn0.85LaxFe2-xO4 [ x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08] were synthesized by using conventional solid state reaction method technique. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), Crystalline La doped Cu-Zn ferrite with compositions Cu0.15Zn0.85LaxFe2-xO4 [x = 0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08] were synthesized by using conventional solid state reaction method technique. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), scanning electron micrographs (SEM), hysteresis loop (M-H) curves and frequency dependent resistivity were employed to inspect the effect of La3+ doping on the structure, microstructure, magnetic and transport properties of the specimens. All the specimens exhibited fcc type cubic spinel structure where the particle size were within 500-1600 nm range. Magnetically ferromagnetic phenomenon was found for all the samples where the effect of La3+ doping consequence on the variation of various parameters like saturation magnetization (Ms), coercivity (Hc) and remanent magnetization (Mr). The resistivity tuned by frequency for all the samples presented the decreasing phenomenon with the increase of applied frequency.

A series of trivalent europium (Eu3+) doped double molybdate phosphors (MLa(MoO4)2, M = Li, Na, K) have been prepared via traditional solid state reaction method at 500-800 °C. Their crystal structures and luminescent properties have been investigated, finding that the phosphors take on single phase through X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) sintered at 600, 700 and 800 °C for lithium, soldium and potassium salt, respectively.Their excited spectra consist of a broad band and three absorptions, in which the higher peaks locate at 400 nm and 470 nm in the region of 350-500 nm. Excited with 470 nm, the emission spectra are composed of four narrow bands and the strongest emission peak is located at 615 nm. The appropriate doping concentration of Eu3+was 10 mol% for the 615 nm emission. The results indicate that this Eu3+activated NaLa(MoO4)2phosphors are promising yellowish red phosphor for ultraviolet (UV) and blue InGaN-based white LED.

Zinc silicate-based (Zn2SiO4:Eu3+) long afterglow phosphors were produced by solid state reaction method. The effects of borax and Eu2O3 additive on the properties of fabricated products have been studied. The results show that, there is not much difference in phase compositions within the borax additive amount; however, their SEM morphologies are different. Borax additive can increase the grain size of the product. Some sintering phenomena could be observed in the sample with Eu2O3 addition. The fluorescence spectroscopy results indicate that, the emission peak of the sample with Eu3+ additive located at 612nm, which may be a good candidate for red phosphor applications. The luminescent mechanism of Zn2SiO4:Eu3+ is also discussed.

LiTaO3: Tm3+, Yb3+powders were synthesized by a high-energy ball-milling (HEB) method compared with the conventional solid-state reaction (SSR) method. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser, the strong blue emission (477 nm) band is observed and attributed to1G4-3H6of Tm3+. Because of it causing high local temperature and narrow particles size, increasing the contact area between the particles and improved crystallinity of the host, synthesis by high-energy ball milling show higher photoluminescence (PL) intensity compared to the solid state reaction method. In the process of mechanical milling, Tm3+, Yb3+co-doped LiTaO3phosphors with high photoluminescence property could be achieved at a relatively low reaction temperature.

Ce3+-doped 0.5La2O3-2SrO-0.5Al2O3 (LSA:Ce) phosphors had been successfully synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method under reducing atmosphere (H2/N2 =1/5). The phase, morphologies and luminescence properties of the LSA:Ce phosphors were investigated. The emission intensity of LSA:Ce phosphors was improved by the addition of SrF2 as flux, and red shift of PL spectra peak was observed in this phosphors. Research results shown that the LSA:Ce phosphors have the potential to meet the development of white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract A new borate compound K3GdB6O12 has been prepared using a high temperature flux method and structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The structure can be described as a three-dimensional framework that is composed of [B5O10]5− groups, K+ ions and Gd3+ ions. In this structure, one crystallographic distinct site is mixed occupied by K and Gd atoms at the molar ratio of 1:1. Furthermore, Sm3+ ion was used as the activator to test primary of K3GdB6O12 to be used as a luminescent host matrix. A series of phosphors K3Gd1−xB6O12:xSm3+ were synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction. The photoluminescence properties and concentration quenching of the prepared phosphors were investigated. The results show that K3Gd1−xB6O12:xSm3+ can be efficiently excited by near-UV light. K3Gd1−xB6O12:xSm3+ might be a promising candidate for visual display and solid-state lighting as an orange emission phosphor.
