During urban design activity, it is necessary to emphasize the stage of Urban Design Scheming as a important link and find a reliable method. According to the characteristics of present urban design and scheming, the semantic web method is put forward as a definite and standardization platform for the more and more complex urban design problems. Because the semantic web is suitable to the characteristics of the human mind and computer, it is possible to realize the computer assist design and scheming for the designer. Thus urban design can be guided and construction of digital city can be realized.

During urban landscape design, both the rational and the perceptual processes is the important stage. According to the characteristics of urban landscape and scheming, the semantic network method is put forward as a tool to solve the more and more complex problems. Because the semantic network is suitable to the characteristics of the human mind and computer, it is possible to assist urban landscape design and scheming for the designer. In this paper, we will put forward an initial idea of semantic network method and discuss how to use this tool.

In the introductory chapter of this book, we discussed the means by which knowledge can be made available on the Web. That is, the representation of the knowledge in a form by which it can be automatically processed by a computer. To recap, we identified two essential steps that were deemed necessary to achieve this task: 1. We discussed the need to agree on a suitable structure for the knowledge that we wish to represent. This is achieved through the construction of a semantic network, which defines the main concepts of the knowledge, and the relationships between these concepts. We presented an example network that contained the main concepts to differentiate between kinds of cameras. Our network is a conceptualization, or an abstract view of a small part of the world. A conceptualization is defined formally in an ontology, which is in essence a vocabulary for knowledge representation. 2. We discussed the construction of a knowledge base, which is a store of knowledge about a domain in machine-processable form; essentially a database of knowledge. A knowledge base is constructed through the classification of a body of information according to an ontology. The result will be a store of facts and rules that describe the domain. Our example described the classification of different camera features to form a knowledge base. The knowledge base is expressed formally in the language of the ontology over which it is defined. In this chapter we elaborate on these two steps to show how we can define ontologies and knowledge bases specifically for the Web. This will enable us to construct Semantic Web applications that make use of this knowledge. The chapter is devoted to a detailed explanation of the syntax and pragmatics of the RDF, RDFS, and OWL Semantic Web standards. The resource description framework (RDF) is an established standard for knowledge representation on the Web. Taken together with the associated RDF Schema (RDFS) standard, we have a language for representing simple ontologies and knowledge bases on the Web.

With the rapid development of computer technology, communications technology, and other related technologies, the Digital City has become a hot topic of current research. The traditional method of constructing digital city based on ArcGis is very complex, the type of computer software that related is much more, and the interaction between the software is poor. For the traditional method of digital urban design is difficult to design and visualization effect is poor, this paper builds the techniques of campus apartment modeling based on the skyline combined specific examples of campus apartments, realizes three dimensional (3D) visualization and query and analysis functions of the campus apartment system and proposes a simple method of creating 3D landscape efficiently.

Urban Design and Planning, being a significant field of architect’s professional activity, science and education, in the Lithuanian classificators of science (1998) and education (2001) is replaced by Land Management which is concerned with another field closely related to engineering management of rural territories. The paper discusses diferences in the conception of these disciplines, and need of correcting the classificators is suggested with intention to create reasonable development conditions for the science and education of urban design and planning corresponding to those existing in the other EU countries. Some of the conceptions and incorrectly used concepts of the Law on Territory Planning requiring changes are indicated. It is stated that during 11–19 years an inadequate approach to a complex and socially urgent matter, related with culture, science and art, has brought the urban development of the country to a situation having evident attributes of chaos. Most damage is done to the architecture of towns, where the role of urban design activity, defining the conceptions of built-up morphostructure, urban complexes and the architecture of public spaces, is essential. Sustainable compositional development of a town defining its individual image and aesthetic attraction also depends on the qualification of a participating architect urbanist and his role in a team of planners. A model of positioning urban design and planning in the systematic conception of architect’s professional activity, science and education as well as possibilities of supplementing the classificators are proposed. Santrauka Lietuvoje priimtuose mokslo (1998 m.) ir studijų (2001 m.) klasifikatoriuose reikšmingos architekto profesinės veiklos, mokslo ir studijų kryptys – urbanistinis projektavimas ir planavimas (Town and Country Planning) – pakeistos į kraštotvarką (Land Management) – kitos srities dalyką, artimą inžinerinio kaimo teritorijų tvarkymo vadybai. Straipsnyje nagrinėjami šių disciplinų sampratos skirtumai ir iškeliama klasifikatorių tikslinimo reikmė, siekiant atkurti urbanistikos mokslui ir studijoms priimtinas plėtojimo sąlygas, adekvačias egzistuojančioms kitose ES šalyse. Nurodomos su tuo susijusios kai kurios keistinos Teritorijų planavimo įstatymo nuostatos, pateikiamas urbanistikos vietos architekto profesinės veiklos, mokslo bei studijų sisteminėje sampratoje modelis ir klasifikatorių papildymo galimybės.

A method of forming a mandatory set of metadata for retro collections of a digital mathematical library is presented. The open resources of the Semantic Network were used as a source for completing metadata. With the help of the software tools of the metadata factory of the digital mathematical library Lobachevskii-DML, the main processes of text analysis of documents of digital retro collections are performed, in particular, the selection of named entities. Further, through the system of queries in the semantic network, the search and selection of information objects is carried out. After performing automatic filtering and normalization, the obtained information is included in the metadata set. As one of the results, the process of forming a mandatory set of metadata for one of the collections of the digital library Lobachevskii-DML – a retro-collection of articles of the journal "Izvestia of the Physics and Mathematics Society at Kazan University" is presented.

This paper presents some key extensions to a representation for electromechanical components that is sufficiently detailed enough to provide for the automated construction of new design configurations. The extensions, shown here, build upon a representation that is both formal and implemented, and can handle the interactions between components even if such interactions represent only partial configurations. The results of these new additions elucidate the power and flexibility of this functional representation for electromechanical components. The method can be used as an interactive tool to allow an engineering designer to explore new design concepts or can be combined with additional software tools to achieve a computational design synthesis approach to topological design problems. The inclusion of function sharing, component layout, and qualitative dynamics achieve a closer approach to how the human mind represents components.
