In this paper, three-dimensional numerical simulation is conducted on the flow and heat transfer process for elliptical tube heat exchanger with rectangular vortex generators and triangular vortex generator by Fluent software, respectively, and the performance for elliptical tube heat exchanger with plate fin is compared. The results show that the Nusselt number increases with the increase in Reynolds number for the inlet velocity range from 1 to 5m/s, friction coefficient decreases with the increase in Reynolds number; at the same Reynolds number, Nusselt number for fin with Vortex Generators and friction coefficient are higher than that of elliptical tube with plate fin ; the vortex generator shape and angle of attack have a great impact on the comprehensive performance within a simulated attack angle and the velocity, at the same pump power, the comprehensive performance for heat exchanger with the rectangular vortex generator increase up to 10%.

Over the last decades several studies have searched for improved Fin and Tube Heat Exchanger (FTHE) designs capable of providing the best thermo-hydraulic performance. The present study aims at quantifying and comparing the thermo-hydraulic performance of different FTHE configurations. Six different designs were analyzed. The first FTHE consisted of an in-line circular tube arrangement and the last one was a FTHE with staggered oval tube with two pairs of Delta Winglet Vortex Generators (DWVG) in common flow up–common flow down (CFU-CFD) configuration. The best performance was obtained using DWVG in CFU-CFD orientation. This configuration enabled a 90% increase of the thermal performance factor when compared with the first case, using only two pairs of vortex generator´s per tube.

In this study, the experimental analysis was performed on the shell-and-tube type heat exchanger containing segmental baffles at different orientations. In the current work, three angular orientations (θ) 0°, 30°, and 60° of the baffles were analyzed for laminar flow having the Reynolds number range 303–1516. It was observed that, with increase of Reynolds number from 303 to 1516, there was a 94.8% increase in Nusselt number and 282.9% increase in pressure drop. Due to increase of Reynolds number from 303 to 1516, there is a decrease in nondimensional temperature factor for cold water (ω) by 57.7% and hot water (ξ) by 57.1%, respectively.

Trefoil-hole baffles have good thermo-hydraulic performances as the support of heat pipes, however the published research paper is relatively limited. The present paper investigates the shellside thermo-hydraulic characteristics of shell-and-tube heat exchanger with trefoil-hole baffles (THB-STHX) under turbulent flow region, and the variations of shellside Nusselt number, pressure loss and overall thermo-hydraulic performance (PEC) with Reynolds number are obtained for baffles of varied pitch with the numerical method. CFD results demonstrate that the trefoil-hole baffle could enhance the heat transfer rate of shell side effectively, and the maximal average Nusselt number is augmented by ~2.3 times that of no baffle, while average pressure loss increases by ~9.6 times. The PEC value of shell side lies in the range of 16.3 and 73.8 kPa-1, and drops with the increment of Reynolds number and the decrement of baffle pitch, which indicates that the heat exchanger with trefoil-hole baffles of larger pitch could generate better overall performance at low Reynolds number. Moreover, the contours of velocity, turbulent intensity and temperature are presented for discussions. It is found that shellside high-speed jet, intensive recirculation flow and high turbulence level could enhance the heat transfer rate effectively. Besides good performance, THB-STHXs are easily manufactured, thus promise widely applied in various industries.

Heat exchangers are tools used to transfer thermal energy between two fluids (liquid or gas) by convection and conduction at different level of temperatures. Heat exchangers are the common equipment and employed in many different applications because of ability to withstand high temperatures and compactness. There are no intermixing or leakage occurred between two fluids during the heat transfer process as fluids are separated by walls of heat exchanger. The main objective of this project is to determine the heat exchanger effectiveness in heat transfer performance. This will be done by investigating the performance of five different angles of heat exchanger which are 150,300, 450, 600 and 750. The effectiveness of heat exchanger depends on the convection heat transfer coefficient of the fluid. Besides that, this project also aims to develop some parameters such as Nusselt number, Reynolds number and Prandtl number for evaluating the heat transfer. It is found that the Nusselt Number at angle of 150 is lower compared to angle of 750. Meanwhile, Reynolds number for angle 150 is higher than angle 750 which means that the type of flow produced by angle 150 is turbulent flow while for 750 angle is laminar flow. Hence, the overall result of this project proved that 150 is the best angle for heat exchanger in chimney because of higher velocity, higher volume flow rate, higher density of gas and higher LMTD. The relationship between Nusselt number and Reynolds number between different angles can be observed by plotting the graph using Maple Software.

Vortex generator as secondary flow enhancement technique has captured the attention of many researchers recently to augment the performance of the fin-and-tube heat exchanger (FTHE). There are various vortex generator parameters that influence the thermal and hydraulic performance in the FTHE such as the geometry and arrangement. In this study, the effect of different vortex generator geometries and arrangements was investigated using numerical simulation method. There are three vortex generator geometries studied including rectangular winglet (RWVG), delta winglet (DWVG), and trapezoidal winglet (TWVG). The vortex generators were placed behind tubes either in common flow down (CFD) or common flow up (CFU) arrangement. The introduction of vortex generators behind tubes resulted in heat transfer augmentation but comes together with higher pressure drop penalty. Further analysis on the thermal performance has found that TWVG in CFU arrangement almost obtained similar thermal performance factor with respect to the baseline case at Reynolds number 500 and 600. However, the thermal performance factor for TWVG in CFU arrangement decreases as the Reynolds number further increased. For other vortex generator cases, lesser thermal performance factor was found as compared to the baseline case.

In the present work, a numerical analysis of conjugate heat transfer and fluid flow in vortex generator (VG) enhanced double-fin and tube heat exchanger is carried out. The enhanced design aims to improve the heat transfer performance of a conventional double-fin and tube heat exchanger for waste heat recovery applications. A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model is developed using ANSYS cfx to simulate fluid flow and conjugate heat transfer process. Numerical simulations with rectangular winglet vortex generators (RWVGs) at five different angles of attack (−20deg≤α≤20deg) are performed for the Reynolds number range of 5000≤Re≤11,000. Salient performance characteristics are analyzed in addition to the temperature distribution and flow fields. Based on the numerical results, it is concluded that the overall performance of the double-fin and tube heat exchanger can be improved by 27–91% by employing RWVGs at α=−20deg for the range of Reynolds number investigated. The study provides useful design information and necessary performance data that can be adopted for the design development of the heat exchanger at a lower manufacturing cost.

Vortex generator is a method to enhancing of heat exchanger performance but still have some disadvantages when the heat transfer performance increase. One of the disadvantage using vortex generator is high pressure drop. This investigation will be compared three type vortex generators to result the overall performance of heat transfer around tube in plate fin heat exchanger. The three types of vortex generator to investigate are rectangular winglet type, delta winglet type, and trapezoidal winglet type in laminar flow. The result showed that using the kind of trapezoidal winglet pair type in the plate fin and tube heat exchanger consist of six rows of round tube with two neighboring fins form a channel better performance than two types vortex generators such as rectangular winglet type and delta winglet type. The heat transfer coefficient when use trapezoidal winglet type was increased almost same with rectangular winglet type and pressure drop was decreased more than delta winglet type.
