All-bolted steel beam-to-column connections for concrete-filled square steel tube (CFST) have the advantages of industry manufacture, being constructed quickly and easily concreting. The new design all-bolted connection discussed in this paper has the construction details of Π-shape plate and high strength bolts which connect the steel beam and CFST column. In order to investigate the static performances and failure modes of this new all-bolted connection, a full three-dimension ANSYS finite element (FE) model of the connection subjected to montonic load is built up. The theoretical values and experimental results are very close, that verifies the rationality of the FE models and the analysis method in this research. Further the calculated results demonstrated the new bolted connections belong to typical semi-rigid connection and have the superior static resistance in stiffness, strength, and rotating capacity.

To investigate the seismic behavior of joint between special-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) column and H-section steel beam, a pseudo-static test was carried out on five specimens with scale ratio of 1:2. The investigated factors include stiffening types of steel tube (multi-cell and tensile bar) and connection types (exterior diaphragm and vertical rib). The failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, stress distribution, and joint shear deformation of specimens were analyzed to investigate the seismic behaviors of joints. The test results showed the connections of exterior diaphragm and vertical rib have good seismic behavior and can be identified as rigid joint in the frames with bracing system according to Eurocode 3. The joint of special-shaped column with tensile bars have better seismic performance by using through vertical rib connection. Furthermore, a finite element model was established and a parametric analysis with the finite element model was conducted to investigate the influences of following parameters on the joint stiffness: width-to-thickness ratio of column steel tube, beam-to-column linear stiffness ratio, vertical rib dimensions, and axial load ratio of column. Lastly, preliminary design suggestions were proposed.

In this paper, using ABAQUS, 16 high-strength concrete filled high-strength square steel tube middle-long columns’ axial compression process were simulated. The load-deflection relationships were obtained and the new combination in improving the bearing capacity and plastic deformation has a great advantage. Realization of length variation slenderness ratio by changing the length of column, this paper also study the influence of slenderness ratio, the main parameters of the high-strength concrete filled high-strength square steel tube middle-long column. It is found that both bearing capacity and the plastic capacity are associated with slenderness ratio.

Abstract Hollow concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) member is mainly adopted in power transmission and transformation structures, but when it is used in the superstructure with complex stress, the hollow CFST member has a low bearing capacity and is prone to brittle failure. To improve the mechanical performance of hollow CFST members, a new type of reinforced hollow high strength concrete-filled square steel tube (RHCFSST) was proposed, and its axial compression performance was researched. 18 finite element analysis (FEA) models of axially loaded RHCFSST stub columns were established through FEA software ABAQUS. The whole stress process of composite columns was studied, and parametric studies were carried out to analyze the mechanical performance of the member. Parameters of the steel strength, steel ratio, deformed bar and sandwich concrete strength were varied. Based on the simulation results, the stress process of members can be divided into four stages: elastic stage, elastoplastic stage, descending stage and gentle stage. With the increase of steel strength, steel ratio, the strength of sandwich concrete and the addition of deformed bars, the ultimate bearing capacity of members also increases. Additionally, the increment of those parameters will improve the ductility of the member, except for the sandwich concrete strength.

This paper presents a test and numerical investigation into the monotonic behavior of three different complex steel trusses to concrete-filled tubular (CFT) column joints. Based on an engineering structure, 1 : 4 reduced-scale specimens are manufactured and the three-dimensional subassembly testing system is designed to apply the monotonic load. Test phenomena and load-stress curves show that all three types of joints have a considerable load-carrying capacity and joint rigidity. Finite element (FE) analysis is adopted, and the stress distribution shows good agreement with test data. Both test and FE results show that local buckling and yielding in the root region of steel truss are the main failure modes of test joints and the core area of the CFT column remains intact which are in accordance with the design conception of “strong column and weak beam.” Design conception of proposed overlap joint form is then investigated based on the FE model, and results show that the optimized overlap joint can effectively reduce the stress concentration in the adjacent steel tube and beam member when compared to the traditional N-type overlap joint. Finally, the influence of the outer diaphragm on the stiffness of joint is analyzed. By comparing the end-displacement of the beam member, conclusion can be obtained that the beam flange thickness is suggested to be chosen as the outer diaphragm thickness. The forms of three different proposed joints and their design conceptions can provide good guidance for designers and engineers.

The tests on thirteen specimens of casing joints of square steel tube were conducted to investigate the flexural behavior of the joints. And numerical simulation studies on that were carried out by ANSYS/LS-DYNA. On this basis, effects of tube wall thickness, tube edge length, and inserting depth on failure mode, ultimate flexural capacity and deformation of the joints were discussed. The results show that there are two types of failure modes, i.e., inside tube yield failure and outside tube shear failure. Ultimate flexural capacity and rigidity of the joints increased with the inserting depth increasing. The ultimate flexural capacity is proportional to tube shear strength, tube wall thickness, inserting depth, and tube edge length.
