A Study on the Properties, Friction, Wear and Adhesion of HVOF Thermal Spray Coating of Micron Size Co-Alloy Powder

High velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating of micron size (μ) T800 powder has been studied for the durability improvement of sliding machine components. The optimal coating process (OCP), surface properties, friction, wear behavior and adhesion of HVOF T800 coating have been investigated. The temperature dependence of friction coefficient and wear behavior have been studied at 25°C and at an elevated temperature 538°C (1,000°F) for the study of the temperature effects on FC and wear behaviors of the coating and for the application on high speed air bearing spindle which operates with no lubricants. The OCP was determined from the best surface properties of the 16 OCP searching coatings designed by the Taguchi experimental program of four spray parameters with three levels: a hydrogen flow rate (FR) of 38-42 FMR (1 FMR=12scfh=9.44×10-5 m/s), oxygen FR of 65-70 FMR and feed rate of 30 g/min, and a spray distance of 5 inch. Hardness, roughness and porosity observed from the 16 coatings were 560-640 Hv (5488-6272 MPa), 2.2-3.0 μm and 0.01-0.04% respectively. Friction coefficient (FC) decreased from 5.5-7.0 to 4.8-6.0 with increasing the sliding surface temperature from 25°C to 538°C because of the higher lubrication effect of Co oxide debris at the higher temperature. Wear trace of the coating and counter sliding SUS 304 surface decreased to more than a half with increasing the sliding surface temperature from 25°C to 538°C. Tensile bond strength (TBS) and tensile fracture location (TFL) of Ti64 / T800 were 8,770 psi (60.5 MPa) and near the middle of the coating respectively. Bond coat NiCr did not influence on the TBS of the coating. The adhesion between Ti64 substrate and T800 coating (Ti64/T800) was stronger than the cohesion strength 8,770 psi (60.5 MPa) of T800 coating. These showed that Ti64/T800 coating was recommendable for durability improvement coating on high speed spindle of Ti64.

High velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray coating of WC base cermet has been studied as a promising candidate in some hard coating area for a replacement of the long traditional electrolytic hard chrome (EHC) plating, which has been raising public health and environmental problems. Micron size WC-Co (mWC-Co) has been coated on Inconel 718 substrate by HVOF thermal spray coating process. Surface properties of coating layer and friction behavior have been investigated for durability improvement coating on the sliding machine component surface.

Material SS316 seringkali digunakan untuk komponen yang bekerja pada temperatur tinggi dengan resiko mengalami oksidasi yang menyebabkan penurunan sifat material dan umur pakai dari komponen. Deposisi Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) NiCr+Cr3C2+Al2O3 dan NiCr+WC12Co+Al2O3 menggunakan metode High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating dengan parameter konstan dilakukan sebagai proses perlakuan pada permukaan SS316 untuk meningkatkan nilai kekerasan dan ketahanan terhadap oksidasi.  Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh proses oksidasi lapisan MMC pada material substrat SS316. Proses oksidasi dilakukan dengan variasi temperatur 500° dan 600°C, penahanan temperatur selama 6 jam, kemudian diteruskan dengan karakterisasi serta perhitungan laju oksidasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan spesimen MMC NiCr+Cr3C2+Al2O3 yang dilakukan proses oksidasi pada suhu 500°C memiliki laju oksidasi terendah yaitu 6,67 x 10-7 gram/mm2 jam.

Copper-iron-based friction materials were prepared by powder metallurgy process. The effects of friction velocity and friction pressure on friction and wear behavior of the material under dry and wet friction conditions were investigated with a constant-speed friction machine. The results show that, at low speed friction, the dry friction coefficient is higher than wet friction coefficient and the friction coefficient increases with increasing friction pressure. The reason is that the water film plays an important role in cleaning and lubricating. At high speed friction, there is not much difference between dry and wet friction coefficients and the friction coefficient is not sensitive to friction pressure changes. This is due to the metal matrix high-temperature softening, caused by high speed friction, which controls the friction properties.

KETAHANAN MULUR DAN OKSIDASI SIKLIK BAJA SUS 304 HASIL PELAPISAN METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE NiCr+Cr3C2 DENGAN METODA HVOF. Telah dilakukan proses deposisi Metal Matrix Composite coating 60% NiCr + 30% Cr3C2+ 10% Al2O3 dan 60% NiCr + 40% Cr3C2 dengan menggunakan teknik High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) Thermal Spray Coating, pada permukaan baja SUS 304. Tujuan pelapisan untuk meningkatkan ketahanan mulur dan oksidasi siklik dalam aplikasi pipa boiler tubes PLTU. Pengujian creep telah dilakukan pada temperatur 550oC dengan pembebanan sebesar 0.4 σy dan 0.6 σy (yield strength) selama 30240 menit (21 hari). Pengujian oksidasi siklik dengan variasi temperatur 600oC, 700oC dan 800oC selama 1 jam dalam tubes furnace dan pendinginan diluar selama 15 menit dalam 1 siklus dan di lakukan sebanyak 5 siklus. Spesimen coating Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) 3 komponen  merupakan coating yang rekomendasikan dalam aplikasi pipa boiler tubes PLTU merupakan laju mulur yang paling rendah sebesar 0.000148917%/jam. Spesimen coating MMC 3 komponen pada temperatur 600oC memiliki perubahan berat oksida, ketebalan coating, dan senyawa oksida yang terbentuk paling rendah.Kata kunci: SUS 304, HVOF Thermal Spray Coating, Metal Matrix Composite, ketahanan mulur, oksidasi siklik.

In this study the time history analyses are carried out three dimensionally for a simple five-story concrete structure seismically isolated incorporating triple friction pendulum bearings with different sliding surface properties with the help of the ABAQUS finite element program. The altering friction surface properties are friction coefficient and radius of curvature. The performances of the various isolators are compared with each other as well as with those of a fixed based structure. For this purpose, maximum relative story displacements, story accelerations and column base shear forces are investigated as seismic reactions. According to the analysis results it can be stated that the seismic reactions of isolated structures are significantly reduced when compared to those of the fixed supported structure. Additionally, when triple friction pendulum bearing isolators with different friction coefficients and friction surface radii are compared, it can be observed that increasing the friction coefficient increases the reactions of the structure while increasing the friction surface radii decreases the reactions
