The housing fillet of universal mill affects the strengthen and stiffness of mill. It is necessary to optimize the housing fillet. In this paper, the simulated annealing algorithm (SA) combined with finite element method (FEM) , a new kind of structural optimization method is established. MATLAB language is used to compile the program combined the SA with FEM to optimize housing fillet of universal mill. Compared with the zero order and first order optimization method of ANSYS program, the result of this optimal method is better.

Aimed to reduce the deformation of workpiece-fixture system, one fixture layout and clamping force optimal method is constructed in this paper. Firstly, system stiffness matrix is built by Finite Element Method (FEM), and one matrix size reducing method is proposed to avoid the high computing time cost of solving FEM balance equation. Secondly, one clamping force optimization method which should be called after fixture layout is generated during every step of optimization algorithm is presented to lessen calling times of FEM solving process and save running time. And then based on these, one fixture layout and clamping force optimization algorithm is constructed using genetic algorithm (GA). At the end of this paper, numeral examples are taken to verify the validity and usability of the methods.

Gears are widely used in many practical engineering to transmit torque. In the process of meshing, contact stress will be produced which causes pitting. Shock becomes more and more serious with the increase of pitting and the probability of failure of meshing gears increases. Contact stress analysis is necessary and important to increase the reliability of gear transmission. In this paper, a fuzzy Hertz approximate optimization method and finite element method are used to deal with a practical engineering problem.

In this study, 2D finite element (FE) solving process with the conformal perfectly matched layer (PML) is elucidated to perform the electromagnetic scattering computation. With the 2D monostatic RCS as the optimization objective, a sensitivity analysis of the basic design parameters of conformal PML (e.g., layer thickness, loss factor, extension order and layer number) is conducted to identify the major parameters of conformal PML that exerts more significant influence on 2D RCS. Lastly, the major design parameters of conformal PML are optimized by the simulated annealing algorithm (SA). As revealed from the numerical examples, the parameter design and optimization method of conformal PML based on SA is capable of enhancing the absorption effect exerted by the conformal PML and decreasing the error of the RCS calculation. It is anticipated that the parameter design method of conformal PML based on RCS optimization can be applied to the cognate absorbing boundary and 3D electromagnetic computation.

Abstract The present study aims in performing eigenvalue analysis and unbalance response for a rotor system having a composite shaft, modelled based on first order shear deformation theory using finite element method with shell elements. Different materials such as boron epoxy, carbon epoxy and graphite epoxy have been tried for various stacking sequences. From the study it is clear that the stacking sequence and material have great influence on the vibrational characteristics of composite shafts.
