A novel aminotriacetic acid (NTA) intercalated MgAl-LDHs have been successfully synthesized by anion exchange method with MgAl-NO3-LDHs as precursor. The XRD pattern implies that NTA anions have replaced NO3- in the interlayer of LDHs. The FT-IR spectra also indicates that NTA anions have intercalated into layers’ space of LDHs, and the carboxyl groups of NTA have been converted into carboxyl anions after intercalation process. When comparing IR spectra of MgAl-NTA-LDHs and MgAl-CO3-LDHs, higher and stronger absorption was observed in the range of 1428-1250 cm-1, especially in the range of 1111-909 cm-1.

PXRD (powder x-ray diffraction), FT-IR (Fourier Transform infrared), N2 adsorption at - 196 °C and TG/DTA (thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses) techniques have been used for characterisation of MgAl- and ZnAl-CrO4 LDHs, which had been prepared by the ion exchange method from the corresponding chloride LDH (layered double hydroxides) precursors. The results indicates that the oxometalate intercalation in both systems produces interlayer microporosity and a basal spacing of 8.7 Å; This gallery height decreases when the samples are calcined in the temperature range 100-300 °C, due to a grafting process. A larger thermal stability is detected for MgAl-CrO4 sample than for the zinc-containing one.

In this work, two synthetic layered double hydroxides (LDH) consists of Zn2+ as M2+ cation with different M3+ cation, i.e., Al3+ and Cr3+ were used as an adsorbent for Congo Red removal aqueous solution. Both Zn-Al and Zn-Cr LDH were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and BET surface area analyzer. The effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, and temperature were evaluated in a batch technique in order to investigate the characteristic of Congo Red adsorption onto both adsorbents. The experimental data were assessed according to the parameter of adsorption kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics. The results of LDH characterization showed that Zn-Al LDH has a higher interlayer distance than Zn-Cr LDH, although Zn-Cr LDH has a higher surface area. The FT-IR analysis indicated the interlayer space of both Zn-Cr and Zn-Al LDH was dominated by CO32- as the interlayer anion species. The adsorption kinetics study of Congo Red on both LDH revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. For the adsorption isotherm, the experimental data fit well with the Freundlich model rather than the Langmuir model. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process that occurred on both adsorbents was spontaneous with exothermic nature.

The use of inorganic layer compounds as adsorbents for organic dyes in water treatment is of increasing interest. In this study, an attempt is made for the synthesis of Mg/Al LDHs by the hydrothermal method. The synthesis temperature was found to significantly affect to the structure of layered double hydroxides (LDHs), as pointed out by FT-IR analysis. In addition, an adsorption capacity of the synthesized LDHs against Congo red in aqueous solutions was investigated and also compared the adsorption results with other dyes such as methylene blue and methyl orange.
