A new chromophore containing azo group, 3,3'-dichloro-4,4'–di-(4-amino-azo-phenyl) -diphenylmethane (CAAPM), was synthesized based on 3,3'-dichloro-4,4'-diamino– diphenylmethane, sodium nitrite and benzenamine via diazo-coupling reaction. Azobenzene polyurethane (PU) containing chiral unit was obtained from CAAPM, chiral reagent L(-)-tartaric acid and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The chemical structures of CAAPM and PU were characterized by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The measurements of refractive index (n) and thermo-optic coefficient (dn/dT) of polyurethane were demonstrated at complex light. The values of n and dn/dT were used to calculate the dielectric constant (ε) and its variation with temperature (dε/dT). The dn/dT is 4.2000~-3.7000×10-4°C-1. The conclusion has a little significance to develop new the digital optical switch (DOS).

The new azo benzene polyurethane (CAPU) was synthesized by diazo coupling reaction with 1,4-Diaminobenzene, sodium nitrite, and R(-)-3-chloro-1,2-propanediol. The solubility was measured with several organic solvents. Some mechanical properties of CAPU, such as tensile strength and ratio of elongation at break, were investigated. The good thermal stability of the CAPU was shown by its absorption spectrum characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and its melting point of 113.5°C. Moreover, the refractive index of CAPU was obtained by the attenuated total reflection (ATR) method at different temperature and wavelength, by which the materials thermo-optic coefficient was calculated. It is shown that the material has a large thermo-optic coefficient and an obvious birefringence phenomena. And the dispersion coefficient was also calculated by the Sellmeyer equation. Because of thermo-optical properties mentioned above, the CAPU could be used to design and generate the thermo-optic switch and even all-optical switch.

AbstractAn azo chromophore molecular S(-)-1,2-bis(4-azophenyl-4-nitro)-ethylenediamine (OABANEDA) was synthesized with 4-nitroaniline and S(-)-1,2-diphenyl ethylenediamine by diazo-coupling reaction. The azo polyurethane-urea (OAAPUU) was obtained from OABANEDA, polyether diol (NJ-210) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). The structure of OAAPUU was characterized by the Fourier transform infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. The physical and mechanical properties of OAAPUU were investigated. The refractive index (

A novel azo-dye  was isolated by a diazo-coupling reaction and characterized by the elemental analysis, mass spectra, IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The processes of complex formation of H4L with some mono-, bis-, and trivalent metal cations were studied by spectrophotometric titration and theoretical modeling. The NBO effective charge calculations indicate a strong covalent character of the coordination bonds at complexation.

An azo chromophore 4-[(6-nitrobenzothiazole-2-yl)diazenyl]phenyl-1,3-diamine NBDPD was synthesized with 2-amino-6-nitrobenzothiazole and m-phenylenediamine by diazo-coupling reaction. Then, NBDPD was polymerized with NJ-220 and IPDI to obtain novel azo benzothiazole polyurethane-urea (BPUU). The structure and physical properties were characterized and investigated. The refractive index and transmission loss of BPUU film were measured by attenuated total reflection technique and the CCD digital imaging devices. The polymeric digital optical switch (DOS) based on the thermo-optic effect of the BPUU was designed and simulated. The results showed that the power consumption and response time of the DOS could be only 2.3 mW and 5.0 ms, respectively.

Polyaniline (Pani) and polypyrrole (Ppy) half hollow spheres with different shell thicknesses were successfully synthesized by three steps process using polystyrene (PS) as the core. The PS core was synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Aniline and pyrrole monomers were polymerized on the surface of the PS core. The shells of Pani and Ppy were fabricated by adding different amounts of aniline and pyrrole monomers. PS cores were dissolved and removed from the core shell structure by solvent extraction. The thicknesses of the Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres were observed by FE-SEM and FE-TEM. The chemical structures of the Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The shell thicknesses of the Pani half hollow spheres were 30.2, 38.0, 42.2, 48.2, and 52.4 nm, while the shell thicknesses of the Ppy half hollow spheres were 16.0, 22.0, 27.0, and 34.0 nm. The shell thicknesses of Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres linearly increased as the amount of the monomer increased. Therefore, the shell thickness of the Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres can be controlled in these ranges.

A novel azobenzene optically polymer (P-DA) was synthesized based on the azo chromophore molecule, chiral reagent L(-)-tartaric acid, acryloyl chloride and methacrylate. The P-DA was characterized by FT-IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR, DSC and TGA. The P-DA had high thermal stability up to its glass-transition temperature (Tg) of 110 oC and 5 % heat weight loss temperature of 199 oC. The UV-induced trans/cis photoisomerization and reflex-isomerization behaviors were investigated. The results indicated that the P-DA solution could undergo photochromism after irradiated by 365 nm UV light. The optical parameters: refractive index (n), the dielectric constant (ε) and thermal volume expansion coefficient (β) of P-DA were obtained. The thermo-optic coefficients are one order of magnitude larger than those of the inorganic materials, such as SiO2 (1.1×10−5 oC -1 and LiNbO3 (4×10−5 oC -1) and was larger than the organic material such as polystyrene (-1.23×10-4 oC -1) and PMMA (-1.20×10-4 oC -1). The conclusion had a little significance to develop optical communication.
