In order to servitize manufacturing enterprises and meet the need of product service system, approaches to servitization are studied. Design for service method, manufacturing for service mode, and product-based service are regarded as key problems and discussed in detail respectively. Concept and evaluation standards of product service relationship are also discussed. And some significant topics for future studies are put forward.

With the fiercer competition and more complex environment of manufacturing industry, the service-oriented manufacturing mode integrating manufacture and service has become an inevitable trend. Together with the producer services and product-service system, the development process of service-oriented manufacturing mode was summarized. Compared with the traditional manufacturing mode, a conceptual model of service-oriented manufacturing was proposed. Furthermore, the operational framework of service-oriented manufacturing mode was established based on its operating characteristics. The research paper could provide the manufacturing enterprises with some foundation for implementing the service-oriented manufacturing mode.

A stream of servitisation research has focused on the construction of taxonomies and typologies of product–service system business models (BMs). However, their relevance in the context of increased utilisation of digital technologies may be questioned. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to empirically revisit the existing product–service system BM taxonomies to explore the following research question: How can the BMs of servitised manufacturing firms be categorised in the digital era? The question is addressed through an embedded case study of five servitised firms. We found that the firms’ BMs varied with regard to the degree of the suppliers’ ownership of delivered products, degree of smartness of the services provided and degree of performance orientation of contracts. Based on these findings, we derived a new product–service system BM taxonomy with eight categories, presented in a 2 × 2 × 2 matrix, that significantly extends earlier taxonomies.

A product service system (PSS) has been developed for manufacturing enterprises to provide users with personalized products and services. The optimization of PSS scheme selection is a key stage in the PSS design phase. Given the dynamic characteristics of the multi-dimensional influencing factors and their coupling relationships, we propose a digital twin-driven framework to enhance the optimization of PSS scheme selection. The framework is divided into a digital twin layer, an information layer, and an approach layer. The logical relationship between the three layers is given, and a quantitative PSS scheme selection optimization mechanism is designed. Fuzzy numbers and rough boundary intervals are integrated for the attribute value determination of the PSS scheme. A modified TOPSIS developed by replacing Euclidean distance with relational vector distance is adopted for the PSS scheme assessment. A case of an air purification PSS scheme selection optimization under the proposed digital twin driven framework is studied. It is shown that the designed PSS scheme selection optimization mechanism is effective and can be enhanced with the presented framework.

Increasing awareness of the importance of services has given rise to the concept of product-service system where goods and services are sold as an integrated package to customers. On the other hand, the emerging sustainability concept has escalated the demand for sustainability for industries. Consequently, it is necessary to build strategies that lead the company to achieve sustainability goals while keeping competitiveness. Drawing on the necessity service and sustainability concept in the quality improvement of the product-service system, this study aims to develop a systematic design tool by filling the gap to the previous studies. We used Quality Function Deployment (QFD) approach by considering customer requirements (VoC) and stakeholder requirements (VoSt), instead of VoC only, based on the service and sustainability dimensions. We refer to the proposed QFD approach as QFDSPS. We introduce service productivity index (SPI) to measure the performance of the system. Thus, in the proposed methodology, the strategies for quality improvement were defined as subject to VoC, VoSt, and SPI. The methodology was implemented in a Javanese restaurant which meets the characteristics of a product-service system. The result shows that the proposed method can be implemented. The implications due to the implementation of the method are also discussed.
