In recent years, various organizations have focused on considering the sustainability concept in the supply chain (SC) design. Managers try to increase the sustainability of SCs to achieve a competitive advantage in today’s growing market. Designing a sustainable supply chain (SSC) by integrating economic, social, and environmental dimensions affects the SC’s overall performance. To achieve the SSC, decision makers (DMs) are required to evaluate different strategies and then apply the most effective one to design SC networks. This study proposes an assessment approach based on the network data envelopment analysis (DEA) to choose an efficient strategy for each stage of an SSC network. This approach seeks to provide a sustainable design with DMs to avoid imposing additional costs on SCs that result from noncompliance with environmental and social issues. To this end, we consider sustainability-concept-related inputs and outputs in the network DEA model to choose the most efficient strategy for SSC design. The strategy selection process can become an important issue, especially when SCs active in a competitive environment. Accordingly, a crucial feature of the presented model is considering the issue of competition to choose the efficient strategy. Furthermore, undesirable outputs and feedbacks and independent inputs and outputs for intermediate stages in the network system are considered to create a structure compatible with the real world. The output of the proposed approach enables DMs to select the appropriate strategy for each stage of the SSC network to maximize the aggregate efficiency of the network.

Hydropower is a well-known technology, applied worldwide for electricity generation from renewable sources. Within the current framework, some studies have started to consider its application to existing urban water systems, to harness an excess of energy that otherwise would be wasted. This research sought to determine a methodology to assess the potential of hydropower application to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), regarding different aspects of sustainability. Firstly, previously developed methodologies for potential assessment in this sector at a country level were analyzed. Secondly, data from existing real case studies were gathered from publicly available documents and a theoretical analysis of their actual performance was conducted to validate assumptions made in the previous methodologies. As a result, the proposed new approach suggests adapting methodologies for potential assessment at a lower level, considering possible driving factors, other than economic feasibility. To define the study area, the management model scope should be considered. The power to determine the cut-off point for a WWTP to be considered as a potential site, is proposed to be lowered according to technical feasibility. Additionally, bearing in mind the sustainability concept, social or environmental factors should also be introduced in the methodology, tailored to the region being assessed. This novel perspective could provide a closer approach to the most likely decision-making level for these kinds of strategies in the wastewater industry.

Abstract The vernacular residential adapted to climate change in various ways. Some studies showed that vernacular residential which is associated with traditional houses own its genius loci to climate change adaptation. This study aims to investigate the sustainability concept obtained in the Aceh vernacular residential in its attempt to adapt to climate change. This study was based on the data that been collected from observation and literature analysis. The result showed that the climate change adaptation of the vernacular residential in Aceh demonstrated in material, construction, form, orientation, space configuration, opening, ventilation, and infiltration. All those aspects covered the aspect of vernacular, which are technical, cultural, and environmental. The concept of sustainable architecture was raised based on these aspects. Further research should be conducted to extend the location of research in various data sources.

The most up-to-date challenge of modern marketing is the need to incorporate sustainability principles into marketing strategies. Promoting the principles of sustainability requires setting environmental objectives at the enterprise level and devising marketing strategies that meet the environmental requirements and customer preferences. The article deals with two basic topics, the issue of environmental marketing against the background of customer preferences and generations of consumers, more precisely as they were profiled in Slovakia. Examining the preferences of customers of different generations aimed to prove that implementing environmental marketing principles is necessary. Although the aim of the research was to correlate selected findings with the preferences of the environmental objectives of different generations, the research that focused on the behavior of different generations of consumers under the sustainability concept revealed some original findings concerning the assessment of ethnocentrism under the sustainability concept.

The development of the sustainability concept began primarily in the European continent. Its integration into lifestyles and with it, the increase of social awareness, were formed with the contributions of various NGOs. In this context, we see the contribution of integrating sustainable design principles into the academic program. The factors that are important in sustainable design such as lower usage of raw materials, environmentally friendly materials, convenience in production and assembly, energy consumption, and ease of recycling are conveyed to the students through various courses in the academic program. A case study was carried out to analyze the transfer of sustainable design principles to the education process and its implications. This research was carried out in three stages: creating a theoretical framework, fieldwork, and practical work with students who attended the Sustainable Design course. According to the results students create new designs before recycling waste products within the scope of repurposing concept.   Keywords: Repurposing, sustainability, industrial design, education, application

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how the implementation of Lean & Green (L&G) in an Industry 4.0 (I4.0) environment can enhance the potential impact of the L&G approach and help manufacturing companies moving towards higher operational and sustainable performances. The research work developed here shows that although a proper definition of L&G is neither exposed worldwide nor explicitly implemented under that name, the current industrial firms are deeply concerned about the demanding challenge of keeping businesses flexible and agile without forgetting strategies to minimize the acceleration of climate change. So, one contribution of this paper is the identification and characterization of L&G drivers and design principles, supporting a robust and well-informed L&G systems implementation. As inferred from the research work, this challenge demands high quality and updated data together with assertive information. Thus, the implementation of L&G in I4.0 contexts is the answer to overcome the identified barriers. Likewise, an L&G system contributes to overcoming the challenges of I4.0 implementation regarding the triple bottom line sustainability concept. Consequently, another contribution of this paper is to depict why an L&G system performs better in the I4.0 context.

AbstractWe previously identified that urban brownfield regeneration projects are relevant strategies to limit urban sprawl while revitalizing portions of cities, namely mixed-use neighbourhoods. Moreover, these neighbourhoods in transition are opportunities to foster the implementation of sustainability objectives within European metropolitan areas. This chapter explore this subject by deepening the sustainability issues at the neighbourhood scale. To provide the basis for discussion, we first attempt to frame the urban sustainability concept and to explain how the neighbourhood scale is a means of action for cities. Then, we analyse the different sustainability issues according to a wide variety of parameters that must especially be taken into account during sustainable neighbourhood projects, and more precisely urban brownfield regeneration projects. These parameters cover the four pillars of sustainability—the environment, society, economy, and governance—and the polycentric reorganization of European metropolitan areas.

PurposeEducation can provide learners with the necessary awareness, values and skills to understand the complexity of sustainability. This study aims to analyse the extent to which sustainability concepts have been implemented in higher education programmes in the tourism and hospitality fields.Design/methodology/approachFor the purpose of the current study, data on all tourism and hospitality programmes offered in Cyprus higher education institutions (HEIs) at the Bachelor level was obtained. Analysis was conducted on publicly available programme descriptions, learning outcomes, program content and syllabi and course descriptions.FindingsThe study finds that sustainability concept implementation in undergraduate hospitality and tourism degree programmes is at a developing stage. The majority of the HEI follow trends and offer sustainability courses either as compulsory or elective courses, but concept implementation in programme learning outcomes and programme descriptions is relatively limited.Originality/valueThis paper presents a review of data and evidence on sustainability concept implementation in tourism and hospitality education in Cyprus.

Abstract This study aims to use the concept of sustainability and provide guidance to geotechnical engineers to contribute towards greater sustainability in geotechnical design and construction. The methodology of the sustainability framework aims to support indicators and tools used in the sustainability concept in geotechnical engineering. In addition, available indicators will be used to analyze the role of natural resources, social impacts, environmental and economic aspects. In order to demonstrate the sustainability assessment approach, a case study is evaluated using the methodology of sustainability framework by using Multi-Criteria Analysis (MCA). The assessment is studied for raft footing and deep foundations (driven and bored piles A foundation treatment of 15×15 m and 0.45 m thickness to carry a high static load or to carry cyclic loading is analyzed. The results indicate the calculations of sustainability indices from the multicriteria analysis show that the option of raft footing than deep foundation if raft provides adequate allowable load by improving the soil using lime piles technique is sustainable.
