With the fiercer competition and more complex environment of manufacturing industry, the service-oriented manufacturing mode integrating manufacture and service has become an inevitable trend. Together with the producer services and product-service system, the development process of service-oriented manufacturing mode was summarized. Compared with the traditional manufacturing mode, a conceptual model of service-oriented manufacturing was proposed. Furthermore, the operational framework of service-oriented manufacturing mode was established based on its operating characteristics. The research paper could provide the manufacturing enterprises with some foundation for implementing the service-oriented manufacturing mode.

In order to servitize manufacturing enterprises and meet the need of product service system, approaches to servitization are studied. Design for service method, manufacturing for service mode, and product-based service are regarded as key problems and discussed in detail respectively. Concept and evaluation standards of product service relationship are also discussed. And some significant topics for future studies are put forward.

With fiercer competition and more complex manufacturing environment, as a new manufacturing mode, service-oriented manufacture integrating manufacturing and service is used to mine new value source for manufacturing enterprises. The characteristics of the new manufacturing mode are analyzed, then a conceptual mode of the service-oriented manufacturing is concluded, and the features of the conceptual model are summarized from three different stages of the upstream, midstream and downstream. Based on these, a hierarchical architecture of service-oriented manufacturing mode is presented, and the different layers are described, which will provide good guideline to study the key technologies of service-oriented manufacturing.

Manufacturing industry has become professionalization, socialized, service-oriented, and collaborative, so lots of professional and socialized small- and medium-sized enterprises spring up to provide product–service for satisfying customers’ requirements. Faced with this trend, a new manufacturing mode called social manufacturing has been proposed to aggregate these small- and medium-sized enterprises into communities for mass individualization manufacturing. As the basis of social manufacturing, small- and medium-sized enterprises communities are established by two steps. First, the socialized manufacturing resources of the small- and medium-sized enterprises are described and similar socialized manufacturing resources are clustered into one socialized manufacturing resources community by growing hierarchical self-organizing map algorithm. Suitable socialized manufacturing resources communities are selected and then the socialized manufacturing resources are mapped into small- and medium-sized enterprises. Second, these small- and medium-sized enterprises form a community to complete the order together. Product cost and delivery time serve as the indicator for order allocating in the small- and medium-sized enterprises community. A multi-objective algorithm is proposed to tackle the order allocation problem. A case from a professional printing firm is analyzed to validate the proposed methodology and model. Some rules are revealed and these rules are useful for guiding practical production. The study endorses the establishing small- and medium-sized enterprises communities under the environment of social manufacturing and suggests extensive practical implications.

Service-oriented manufacturing is an advanced manufacturing mode focused on integrating service with manufacturing. The remarkable importance is known to be strongly associated with the development of service-oriented economy in the period in which China transfers the traditional equipment manufacturing industry to the service-oriented manufacturing. We take a close insight into basic theories of service-oriented manufacturing, and then we analyze the characteristics, profiles, as well as the present situation of the equipment manufacturing. Finally, we propose some countermeasures for transferring the equipment manufacturing to the service-oriented manufacturing from the views of the aggregation mechanism, the network of innovative mechanism and manufacturing value-added chain.

Under the background of global warming, how to reduce carbon emissions and realize green and sustainable development in China is worth exploring. Firstly, this paper makes theoretical analysis, and considers that FDI in producer services can reduce the carbon emission of manufacturing industry by optimizing the input structure of manufacturing industry, improving the productivity and technical level, and enhancing the management ability and resource allocation ability of manufacturing enterprises. Then, using the panel data of China’s industries from 2004 to 2014, this paper uses two-way FE method to carry out empirical test, and finds that the increase of FDI in producer services can significantly reduce carbon emissions. Therefore, it is necessary to actively guide multinational corporations to invest in China’s producer services industry, to promote green and sustainable economic development.

Abstract: Service-oriented manufacturing is a new manufacture mode. In order to solve the problem of resource allocation evaluation of service-oriented manufacturing enterprise, a Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) mathematical model based on cost-benefit was constructed in this approach. The resource allocation evaluation problem was mapped to the cost-benefit analysis problem by using DEA, considering the characteristics of the service-oriented manufacturing mode, taking enterprise T as the example to analysis self-supporting allocation cost and cost-benefit value of service-oriented manufacturing enterprises to verify the applicability of the model. Finally, according to the recent five years’ situation of enterprise T, the optimization strategy of resource allocation was given.

A stream of servitisation research has focused on the construction of taxonomies and typologies of product–service system business models (BMs). However, their relevance in the context of increased utilisation of digital technologies may be questioned. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to empirically revisit the existing product–service system BM taxonomies to explore the following research question: How can the BMs of servitised manufacturing firms be categorised in the digital era? The question is addressed through an embedded case study of five servitised firms. We found that the firms’ BMs varied with regard to the degree of the suppliers’ ownership of delivered products, degree of smartness of the services provided and degree of performance orientation of contracts. Based on these findings, we derived a new product–service system BM taxonomy with eight categories, presented in a 2 × 2 × 2 matrix, that significantly extends earlier taxonomies.
