Low-Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Microstructural Evolution of the Fe–30Mn–4Si–2Al Alloy

Superior fatigue life of 8000 cycles at low-cycle fatigue with a total strain Δε=2% was found in the Fe–30Mn–4Si–2Al high-Mn alloy, as compared to Fe–30Mn–6Si–0Al and Fe–30Mn–3Si–3Al alloys with fatigue life of 2×103 cycles. Examination of microstructural evolution and cyclic hardening/softening behavior was shown that high fatigue resistance of Fe–30Mn–4Si–2Al alloy associated with delayed development of the deformation induced martensite and inhibited dislocation slip as compared to Fe–30Mn–6Si–0Al and Fe–30Mn–3Si–3Al alloys, respectively. Cyclic strain softening followed by secondary strain hardening was observed in the Fe–30Mn–4Si–2Al alloy after primary hardening. Primary hardening to about 40 cycles was associated with continuous increase in density of planar dislocations and the development of slip bands. The cyclic softening manifesting as the drop of the stress amplitude in the range of the cycles from 40 to 400 was accompanied by development of deformation induced ε-martensite in place of the slip bands. At the N>400 cycles further increase in the volume fraction of deformation ε-martensite leads to continuous hardening up to the failure. In the presentation we will discuss the details of microstructural evolution during LCF of the Fe–30Mn–4Si–2Al alloy.

Co -base superalloys have been applied in the stationary components of gas turbine owing to their excellent high temperature properties. Low cycle fatigue data on ECY-768 reported in a companion paper were used to evaluate fatigue life prediction models. In this study, low cycle fatigue tests are performed as the variables of total strain range and temperatures. The relations between plastic and total strain energy densities and number of cycles to failure are examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of Cobalt-based super alloy at different temperatures. The fatigue lives is evaluated using predicted by Coffin-Manson method and strain energy methods is compared with the measured fatigue lives at different temperatures. The microstructure observing was performed for how affect able to low-cycle fatigue life by increasing the temperature.

Fatigue is the most critical failure mode of many mechanical component. Therefore, fatigue life assessment under fluctuating loads during component development is essential. The most important requirement for any fatigue life assessment is knowledge of the relationships between stresses, strains, and fatigue life for the material under consideration. These relationships, for any given material, are mostly unique and dependent on its fatigue behavior. Since the work of Wöhler in the 1850’s, the uniaxial stress versus cycles to fatigue failure, which is known as the S-N curve, is typically utilized for high-cycle fatigue. In general, high cycle fatigue implies linear elastic behavior and causes failure after more than 104 or 105 cycles. However. the transition from low cycle fatigue to high cycle fatigue, which is unique for each material based on its properties, has not been well examined. In this paper, this transition is studied and a material dependent number of cycles for the transition is derived based on the material properties. Some implications of this derivation, on assessing and approximating the crack initiation fatigue life, are also discussed.

Amorphous solids, such as certain polymers, alloys, and polymer-based composites,are increasingly used materials in engineering components and thus, their fatigue behavioris of utmost importance. The article presents a unified approach suitable for modeling bothisothermal high cycle and low cycle fatigue behavior. The emphasis is placed on the ductilefatigue in which fatigue damage represents the material degeneration during the creation ofmicro-cracks governing majority of the total fatigue life (up to 95%). The model’s capability fortechnologically important polycarbonate (PC) polymer is addressed. The results, in accordancewith experimental observations, favor ductile fatigue behavior, i.e. damage fields remain smallfor most of the fatigue life and do not cause the macroscopic stress reduction. Due to thisproperty, fatigue life of an entire structural element can be evaluated by exploiting singlelocations at which the fatigue damage decisively emerges.

The low cycle fatigue behavior was experimentally studied with the 3-dimension notched LD8 aluminum alloy specimens at 300°C. The 3- dimension stress-strain responses of specimens were calculated by means of the program ADINA. The multiaxial fatigue life prediction was carried out according to von Mises’s equivalent theory. The results from the prediction showed that the equivalent strain range can be served as the valid mechanics for predicting multiaxial high temperature and low cyclic fatigue life.

During mid 2006, ANL issued a NUREG/CR-6909 [2] report that is now applicable in The US for evaluations of PWR environmental effects in the fatigue analysis of new reactor components. In order to assess the conservativeness of the application of this NUREG report, low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests were performed by AREVA NP on austenitic stainless steel specimens in a PWR environment. The selected material exhibits in an air environment a fatigue behavior consistent with the ANL reference “air” mean curve. Tests were performed for two various loading conditions: for fully reverse triangular signal (for comparison purpose with tests performed by other laboratories with same loading conditions) and complex signal, simulating strain variation for actual typical PWR thermal transients. Two surface finish conditions were tested: polished and ground. The paper presents on one side the comparison of environmental penalty factors (Fen = Nair,RT/Nwater) as observed experimentally with the ANL formulation (considering the strain integral method for complex loading), and, on the other hand, the actual fatigue life of the specimen with the fatigue life predicted through the NUREG/CR-6909 application. Low Cycle Fatigue test results obtained on austenitic stainless steel specimens in PWR environment with triangle waveforms at constant low strain rates gives Fen penalty factors close to those estimated using the ANL formulation (NUREG report 6909). On the contrary, it was observed that constant amplitude LCF test results obtained under complex signal reproducing an actual sequence of a cold and hot thermal shock exhibits significantly lower environmental effects when compared to the Fen penalty factor estimated on the basis of the ANL formulations. It appears that the application of the NUREG/CR-6909 [2] in conjunction with the Fen model proposed by ANL for austenitic stainless steel provides excessive margins whereas the current ASME approach seems sufficient to cover significant environmental effect for components.

Low cycle fatigue behavior of Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu solder was investigated under fully reversed cyclic loading, with particular emphasis on microstructural effects. The LCF behavior of the solder with equiaxed microstructure was found to differ greatly from that of the solder with a dendrite microstructure. At a given total strain amplitude, the dendrite microstructure exhibited a much longer fatigue life than the equiaxed microstructure. Such a strong microstructural effect on fatigue life arose from the difference in cyclic deformation and fracture mechanisms between the two microstructures. A large number of microcracks along grain boundaries of the equiaxed structure solder developed with increasing cycling, while for the dendrite structure solder, cyclic deformation took place along the direction of the maximal shear stress during fatigue tests and microcracks initiated and propagated along shear deformation bands. Besides, the fatigue behavior of the dendritic microstructure was very sensitive to cyclic frequency whereas the fatigue behavior of the equiaxed microstructure showed less sensitivity to cyclic frequency.
