Ba(Co1/3(Nb1-xW5x/6)2/3)O3 (0<x≤0.05) (BCWN) microwave dielectric ceramics have been prepared by solid-state reaction method. The microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of BCWN ceramics were investigated systematically in this paper. The results show that the sintering temperature decreases with the substitution of W6+. The Ba(Co1/3(Nb1-xW5x/6)2/3)O3 solid solution is formed with the small substitution of W6+ (x≤0.01). With the increase of x, the impurity phase BaWO4 occurrs and the grains become less homogeneous. Combined with the analysis of X-Ray Diffraction, the cation ordering degree on B-site increases in the sample of x=0.01, which leads to the decrease of the dielectric loss. However, the second phase BaWO4 inhibits the formation of the ordered structure with the reduction of sinterability. Due to the formation of BaWO4, the values of εr and τf of all samples decrease subsequently. The optimized microwave dielectric properties of Ba(Co1/3(Nb1-xW5x/6)2/3)O3 ceramics were obtained in the samples of x=0.01: εr=33.8, Q×f =110761 GHz, τf = -17 ppm/°C.

Dielectric ceramics have been widely investigated and used for microwave applications such as resonators and filters. The present study deals with the influence of sintering temperature on microwave dielectric properties of TiO2 ceramics with 10, 20, and 30 wt% ZrO2. Three compositions have been developed through mixing procedures and then tested for each sintering temperature: 1500 and 1400 °C. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy are carried out aiming to explain the ceramic behavior of each sample. The dielectric constants of different ceramics for both temperatures varied from 85.4 to 62.6, while their quality factor due to dielectric losses varied from 3110 to 1630. The Q decrease is attributed to the non uniform grain growth and to the obtained crystalline phases. The best microwave parameters were obtained for the ceramics sintered at 1400 °C, which can be applied in microwave circuits as dielectric resonators.

The effects of Li2CO3-V2O5 (LV) co-doped on the sinterability, phase compositions and microwave dielectric properties of 0.6Mg4Nb2O9-0.4SrTiO3 composite ceramics have been investigated. All specimens were prepared by solid-state reaction method and sintered at 1050-1200oC for 5h. With an amount LV addition, the densification sintering temperature is significantly lowed from 1300oC to 1175oC. The non-stoichiometric compounds Sr(NbTi)O3+δ and Mg4(Nb1-xTix)2O9-δ were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. For the specimen with 1.5 wt% LV addition sintered at 1175oC for 5 h exhibited dielectric properties: εr=20.1, Q•f=10 240 GHz, τf =0.15 ppm/oC.

AbstractThis study investigates the bulk density, sintering behaviour, and microwave dielectric properties of the MgO-2B2O3 series ceramics synthesised by solid-state reaction. According to the X-ray diffraction and microstructural analyses, the as-prepared MgO-2B2O3 ceramics possess a single-phase structure with a rod-like morphology. The effects of different quantities of H3BO3 and BaCu(B2O5) (BCB) on the bulk density, sintering behaviour, and microwave dielectric properties of the MgO-2B2O3 ceramics were investigated. Accordingly, the optimal sintering temperature was obtained by adding 30 wt% H3BO3 and 8 wt% BCB. We also reduced the sintering temperature to 825 °C. Furthermore, the addition of 40 wt% H3BO3 and 4 wt% BCB increased the quality factor, permittivity, and temperature coefficient of resonance frequency of MgO-2B2O3 to 44,306 GHz (at 15 GHz), 5.1, and −32 ppm/°C, respectively. These properties make MgO-2B2O3 a viable low-temperature co-fired ceramic with broad applications in microwave dielectrics.

A new low sintering temperature microwave dielectric ceramic, Li2ZnTi3O8, was investigated. X-ray diffraction data show that Li2ZnTi3O8 has a cubic structure [P4332(212)] with lattice parameters a = 8.37506 Å, V = 587.44 Å3, and Z = 4 when the sintering temperature is 1050 °C. The Li2ZnTi3O8 ceramic exhibits good microwave dielectric properties with εr about 26.2, Q×f value about 62,000 GHz, and τf about −15 ppm/°C. The addition of BaCu(B2O5) can effectively lower the sintering temperature from 1050 to 900 °C without degrading the microwave dielectric properties. Compatibility with Ag electrode indicates this material can be applied to low temperature cofired ceramic devices.

0.95MgTiO3-0.05CaTiO3 (95MCT) microwave dielectric ceramics was prepared solid-state reaction method. Effect of H3BO3 additive and forming pressure on sintering process, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of 95MCT were investigated. The result showed that the additive of H3BO3 can lower the sintering temperature of 95MCT, and improve the densification of 95MCT. MgTi2O5 was found as mesosphere, which can be effectively suppressed through the additive of H3BO3. Excellent microwave dielectric properties of ceramics was obtained when the H3BO3 additive was 0.50wt%. The best value of dielectric constant (εr), quality factor (Q×f) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf ) of 21.54, 67,286GHz and-4.1ppm/oC was obtained for the ceramics with sintering 1220oC for 2h.

Low-temperature sintered Ca[(Li1/3Nb2/3)0.8Ti0.2]O3-δ (CLNT) microwave dielectric ceramics with V2O5 and ZnO additives were prepared by the conventional solid state reaction method. The sintering behavior and microwave dielectric properties of CLNT ceramics were investigated. The main diffraction peaks of all the specimens sintered at the temperature under 1150◦C split due to the coexistence of the non-stoichiometric phase and stoichiometric phase, which all possess CaTiO3-type perovskite structures. ZnO and V2O5 combined additives lowered the sintering temperature of CLNT ceramics from 1150◦C to 1090◦C. and the Qf values were improved from 18,210 GHz to 20,740 GHz. The CLNT ceramics with 4 wt% ZnO addition sintered at 1090◦C showed good microwave dielectric properties with εr ~39.7, Qf ~20,740 GHz, τf ~8.6 ppm/◦C. The relationship between dielectric properties and the sintering behavior was also discussed.

The BCB (BaCu(B2O5)) powders were synthesized by solid state reaction method and its effects on the microstructures, the phase formation and the microwave dielectric properties of MCT (Mg0.95Ca0.05TiO3) ceramics were investigated. BaO and B2O3 first forms BaB2O4, and then BaB2O4 reacts with CuO forming BCB. The sintering temperature of MCT ceramics with as-synthesized BCB addition can be effectively lowered from 1450°C to 1100°C due to the liquid phase effect. The formation of second phase (MgTi2O5) was restrained. The 3wt% BCB-doped MCT ceramics sintered at 1100°C for 3h have optimum microwave dielectric properties of Kr=21.5, Q×f=28000GHz, and TCF=-3.3ppm/°C. Obviously, BCB could be a suitable sintering aid that improves densification and microwave dielectric properties of the MCT ceramics.

The Ba5(Nb1-xTax)4O15 (x=0~0.5) solid-solution ceramics with hexagonal perovskite structure were prepared by solid-state oxide route. The phases and structure of the sintered ceramics were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influences of composition and sintering temperature on the bulk density, microstructure and microwave dielectric properties were also investigated. As the value of x increased from 0 to 0.5, the Q×f value increases from 36,049 to 49,493 GHz (at ~9GHz), whereas the dielectric constant (εr) decreases from 39.21 to 33.03 and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf ) decreases from 78.6 to 19.4 ppm/oC. The results indicate that the microwave dielectric properties of Ba5(Nb1-xTax)4O15 ceramics can be easily modified in a large range by changing the relative content of Ta to Nb.
