The streams and lakes of western Montana offer a variety of habitats for species of aquatic insects but heretofore extensive collection and study of these forms has not been undertaken. During the past two years collections of both nymphs and adults have been made on several streams. The Plecoptera in these collections include the undescribed nymphs of Nemoura cinctipes Banks and several species which have not been reported for Montana.

The aim of this article is to shed some light on the situation that occurs when scholarly knowledge, once highly valued, is successively undermined, while elements of the same learning live on as attractive resources to other stakeholders. More accurately, the research question relates to the process that starts with many ethnologists who, over time, come to increasingly view formerly important materials as less relevant to their own academic issues. For the sake of the argument, the Nordic Museum’s extensive collection of excerpts concerning folk customs and beliefs is used as an eye-opening case study. During the 1960s and 1970s, folklore researchers and ethnologists retreated from researching those lingering traces of the past—of which the Nordic Museum’s excerpt collection constitutes a powerful material centre—and thus this field was left free for others to claim. By drawing attention to both the productive force of the Nordic Museum’s collection of excerpts, and a number of contemporary and popular representations of ancient folklore, this article actualises a set of questions that deal with the relationship between new and old knowledge; for what becomes of previously sought after academic learning, once treasured in the Nordic Museum Archive, when the vast majority of the discipline heads for new materials, methods and theories?

<p>The Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo (CSK) volcanic field in the South Aegean Sea is one of the most active volcanic-tectonic lineaments in Europe, having produced numerous explosive eruptions, catastrophic earthquakes, and disastrous tsunamis in the past 350,000 years. The present-day Santorini caldera is located in the centre of the NE-SW trending CSK field, which extends for more than 60 km from the extinct Christiana volcano in the southwest to the active submarine Kolumbo volcano northeast of Santorini. While the onshore architecture of Santorini has been well studied, little is known about its offshore architecture. Further, the past volcanism of Kolumbo is only known for its last eruption in 1650 AD and that of Christiana is completely unknown. Based on the available onshore datings of the volcanic formations, it has been proposed that volcanism in the CSK field initiated at Christiana, then migrated northeast towards Santorini and later to Kolumbo. This, however, has yet to be confirmed by offshore investigations. To fully constrain and understand the initiation and evolution of volcanism in the CSK field, we combine an extensive collection of high-resolution multichannel and vintage seismic data covering the entire zone.</p><p>With these seismic profiles, we are able to (1) correlate the seismo-stratigraphy of the Christiana basin west of Santorini with that of the Anhydros Basin east of Santorini, (2) identify major phases of extrusive and intrusive activity of individual volcanic vents, and (3) establish a regional chrono-stratigraphic framework in which we chronologically integrate these phases. We conclude that volcanism occurred repetitively during distinct phases of activity, which are separated from each other by periods with little or no volcanic activity. The onset of volcanism occurred without the generation of significant pyroclastic flows and was mainly characterized by shallow intrusions, clearly visible at Christiana, at its neighbouring volcanic cones, and at the southwestern flank of Akrotiri. The next phase saw the formation of the Kolumbo Volcanic Chain in the Anhydros Basin and the formation of sill intrusions in the Christiana Basin, which we find below a chaotic, presumably pyroclastic unit. This was followed by a major regional event on Santorini, during which a thick transparent subunit was deposited in all surrounding basins. The most recent phase was dominated by the volcanoclastic deposits from Santorini’s eruptive cycles and the recent eruption of Kolumbo. Using estimates of sedimentation rates, we convert this chrono-stratigraphic scheme into an approximate timeline, which implies that the initiation of volcanism occurred during Late Pliocene to Early Quaternary - much earlier than revealed by onshore dating.</p>

The chapter looks in depth at the publications of the former Italian residents of Eritrea and Ethiopia, written memories of life in Africa, commentaries on current events, works of fiction and an extensive collection of photographs. Rather than as straightforward narrations or as transparent reproductions of people’s experiences, these materials are seen as complex evocations of multifaceted psychic realities, intimately bound up with unseen temporal processes. This cultural production is seen as a means of discovering how the past can return to trouble the present and reveal the individual’s unknowing participation in some of the most deeply layered practices of society.

Comprehensive work on the history of nineteenth-century biographical texts has not been written yet and if it had, it would have to include the laudatory biographies practiced by Warsaw’s Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Nauk (Society of Friends of Arts and Sciences). An extensive collection of them can be found in their yearbooks. This article’s object of interest is Pochwała Józefa Szymanowskiego [Praise of Józef Szymanowski] by Stanisław Kostka Potocki, which was oftentimes cited as an example of exorbitant rhetoric in the past. The Teton fault is a major, range-front normal fault that bounds the east side of the ~70 km-long Teton Range, located in northwestern Wyoming. It is an integral component of the 1,300 km-long Intermountain Seismic Belt, an active zone of intraplate seismicity that extends from southern Utah, northward through western Wyoming, eastern Idaho and western Montana. Geologically the Teton fault has evolved in the last 7 to 9 million years accumulating 6 to 9 km of displacement, concomitant with the development of the Basin-Range extensional tectonics in western Wyoming. In the past 5 to 8 million years, the nearby Yellowstone hotspot has likely influenced the activity of the fault including the timing and amount of slip on the fault. Quaternary scarps of the Teton fault extend for ~55 km, north-south along the east side of the Teton Range and provide excellent exposures of the Teton fault. The Teton fault is the primary structure responsible for producing more than 2,100 m (7,000 ft) of vertical topographic relief of the range front and is the single most important factor contribution to the spectacular topography and scenery of the Teton Range - hence to the essence of the Grand Teton National Park.

A continuum survey of the galactic-centre region has been carried out at Parkes at 20 cm wavelength over the areal11= 355° to 5°,b11= -3° to +3° (Kerr and Sinclair 1966, 1967). This is a larger region than has been covered in such surveys in the past. The observations were done as declination scans.

It is perhaps one of the most important characteristics of the past decade in astronomy that the evolution of some major classes of astronomical objects has become accessible to detailed research. The theory of the evolution of individual stars has developed into a substantial body of quantitative investigations. The evolution of galaxies, particularly of our own, has clearly become a subject for serious research. Even the history of the solar system, this close-by intriguing puzzle, may soon make the transition from being a subject of speculation to being a subject of detailed study in view of the fast flow of new data obtained with new techniques, including space-craft.
